Very sad news I’m afraid. Our lovely DutchOma’s husband Bob died last week on January 6th, after a long illness. We knew he’d been very poorly, but always had hope. Such a sad loss for her, their children, grandchildren, family and friends. Bless them all. They had been married for nearly 43 years. There has been no separate thread, Oma is being supported by friends on the Christian prayer thread here but please do feel free to use this thread to post condolences. She and her family are in our hearts and thoughts, and we send them love.

Oma has supported and encouraged so many Mumsnetters over the years, including us more than she may realise, and has been such a long term staunch supporter of the blanket making projects on Mumsnet, so we were so pleased when she accepted our offer of a Woolly Hug. We will make it with love for her, as a tribute to her beloved Bob, and a celebration of a joint life filled with love.

So we need crocheters, knitters and donors. Can you help us? Please post on this thread, but also PM me ( RatherBeOnThePiste ) with your offers of help so we know where we are. Thank you.

If you would like to donate wool or funds, I can match you up. If you would like to join in but need donated wool, I can help there too.

Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

Knotty ( KnottyLocks ) is here to help with any crafting queries. All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert are equally welcomed. It really is the love and thought that counts. Squares to be 6 inches, using 4mm hook or needles. Please do PM Knotty if you need help.

The Yarn we are Using….

  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK
  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (discontinued but some still around)
  • Debbie Bliss Rialto DK
  • Drops Merino Extra Fine DK
  • James Brett Pure Merino DK (also discontinued, some still to be had)
  • Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK

Just from the brands listed please because we know they combine for wash and wear.

The colours we are using...
A rich, dark palette of blues, greens, purples, plums.

Suggestions for motifs/designs

  • Bob loved Holland so we are thinking tulips to celebrate this, we have a beautiful tulip field design for Team Knit if anyone would like this, please email us on [email protected] (Thanks to PracticallyPerfectNot)
  • We have initials, do PM if you are thinking this might be for you.
  • Can anyone find a ball of wool and knitting needle design?
  • Religious motifs, for example angels would be perfect.

Do use the crafting guide on the website to help you with lots of practical info such as help with buying colours, recommended online retailers and if interested there are a lot of linked suggestions for patterns.

Previous blankets can be seen on the Woolly Hugs website and we are on Facebook and Twitter at MNWoollyHugs/@MNWoollyHugs which are both good ways to keep in touch.

This means so much to Oma, thank you so much for joining with us

Thanks

Hi pistey I've just posted 3 squares for Oma, the extra square for Trin, and 2 cream pram blankets that I hope you can use somewhere.

I have also engaged my mum as a woolly hugger, she had run out of family knitting so I provided her with a full Attic24 stylecraft pack - she rang to say thank you and oh my goodness what a huge bag of wool I'll never use it all (she will, easily) Grin

Bluetinkerbell · 19/02/2014 12:04

Posting this to remind myself to sew the ends in, unravel the messy balls of wool to send along and post my squares tomorrow or Friday! :)

Ophelia Can you check the WH Facebook page, there has been a question about the pattern of one of your gorgeous Little Hugs. You don't need to answer there, do PM and we can add any info you may have.

Thank you Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

Opheliabumps · 21/02/2014 09:54

They were made by my mum, I'll give her a ring later on and ask her Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 21/02/2014 10:14

When you do, two things, please thank her from us and tell her that Debbie Bliss 'liked' them on our Facebook page. :)

Thanks
Bluetinkerbell · 21/02/2014 17:14

My parcel with 3 squares and 2 balls of leftover wool has just made it onto the post van tonight. :)

Opheliabumps · 21/02/2014 17:15

Debbie Bliss? Ooh she'll be thrilled!

PurpleFrog · 21/02/2014 18:33

I posted my squares today... before the deadline! Wink

Opheliabumps · 21/02/2014 20:20

Hi pistey I rang MaBumps Grin

My descriptive powers were somewhat lacking and she's not sure what the pattern was, but I'm going to send her a photo and she'll hunt it out, as she nevers gets rid of a pattern so she's still got it somewhere.

Apparently 'it's a s1 k1 psso in a sort of tree shape, with a wavy top and bottom' did sound vaguely familiar, but weren't quite descriptive enough Grin

Opheliabumps · 21/02/2014 20:21

Ps she was properly excited about Debbie Bliss liking it, and is no doubt going to ring all of her knitting buddies to tell them (she has a lot of knitting buddies, they knitted a replica of the local church a few years ago, it was genuinely impressive).

BarbaraWoodlouse · 21/02/2014 22:08

Sorry I completely fell off this thread but can post 2 squares tomorrow or Monday at the latest. Usual address?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 22/02/2014 10:30

Yes please lovely Babs Yaaay Purple

I'm always so excited when I see Debbie has liked things, really chuffed for folk, always have to make sure they've seen Grin

Magic.

Back in a mo, just away to PMs and the lovely Postie has just been too

RatherBeOnThePiste · 22/02/2014 10:32

I am though genuinely stunned at knitted replicas of churches, not full size?!
