This is Phase 2 of the Little Hugs project.
Since the beginning, the aim of the Little Hugs has been to provide little blankets that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital. Hopefully, Phase 2 will continue to do this and more.

We are launching this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. This is the time of her 21st birthday and we are calling the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, we will send little blankets to children who really need a woolly hug and to feel loved and looked after.

We have been talking to this wonderful organisation World Child Cancer and are arranging for Little Hugs to be sent to children suffering from cancer in low and middle income countries. In these countries their overall chance of survival can be under 10% compared to around 80% in high income countries such as ours.
The first batch of Billie's Blankets will be taken to children in Malawi and Bangladesh.

World Child Cancer's response to our initial idea is below:

'Thank you for your email and your kind offer of support. Your blankets are beautiful and I'm sure they provide great comfort to the children who you make them for.
I'm sure the children would love them. Unfortunately most of the children we see at our projects are not able to survive their cancer due to the poor conditions, lack of knowledge and the high cost of medicine in the worlds poorest countries. In these cases we encourage palliative care for the children through our twinning partners who provide training for local project staff on the importance of this care, especially in pain relief. Psychosocial care is also very important and an area we focus on through supporting parent groups and play therapists. I think your blankets would fit in well with this area.'

How you can help:

By crafting:
You can help by either making a whole Little Hug (see yarn spec)
Or
By making 6" squares, either knitted or crocheted, using Stylecraft Special DK yarn

Or by donating for crafting materials:
If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website or if you do not have Paypal, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste.

Or by donating to World Child Cancer (see below)

*

For all Little Hugs:

Minimum size: 24 inches by 24 inches
If you would like to make a blanket that is bigger, that would be lovely.
The children are aged 0 to 14 so we will need bigger blankets too.

Colours: Your choice.
Although for practical reasons, we advise avoiding white and cream.

Things to avoid:
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.

Materials:
Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic yarn.
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight and make of acrylic yarn. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be washed and dried quickly and easily.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

***

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation.
Money is scarce, they really have so little. In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we have ideas for a craft fundraiser later in the year.
We have set up a Just giving Page here
Your donation is welcome at anytime.

These children need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support Thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family. x

Sad
RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/03/2013 18:14

Obviously not saying BIWI's is a sad excuse of a square, nor agreeing with you.

Schooldidi · 28/03/2013 18:31

The lovely kingfisher is my mum. She is rather lovely :)

I'm sorry my blanket hasn't made it into the post yet. I was planning more blankets to go with it in the same parcel but life got in the way a bit. It'll get into the post within the next couple of weeks.

BIWI · 28/03/2013 19:49

Oh no! You should have had mine by now. I did consider sending it special delivery, but thought that was silly Sad

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/03/2013 20:03

Tis here! BIWI, fret not, was posted next door by mistake. Big phew! And big hooray, tis gorgeous, huge thanks X

MOSagain · 28/03/2013 21:27

GlaikitHasHerFizzBack · 28/03/2013 21:40

H sat on my knitting and broke one of my rosewood needles :( stoopid oaf

Bastard post office have lost a parcel they tried to delivery yesterday. I'm guessing its my parchment. Not waiting on anything else. So I am without wool and without needles double :( :(

BIWI · 28/03/2013 22:00

Oh bloody hell Sad

Seems like special delivery is something we should all think about.

KnottyLocks · 28/03/2013 22:40

Seamless in here, innit?

Fizzy, wot no needles? At all?

I tend to send bigger stuff recorded/ tracked now, so at least I have summat to wave at Post Office folks along with my hook

I generously gave mil my 4mm metal ones yesterday. Today dh snapped my wooden 4mm. I have 4mm dpns but they are too short for my squares.

I could start something else on different needles. But I might just go to bed!

MOSagain · 29/03/2013 07:29

Am off on holiday tomorrow am so don't have time to do another candyfloss square. Will keep fingers crossed that it turns up soon

BIWI · 29/03/2013 08:19

If it doesn't, I could always do another one - I have some candyfloss left.

Where are you going, MOS?

MOSagain · 29/03/2013 08:28

Thanks BIWI off to Portugal tomorrow am. Planning to do a bit of 'hill training' for my forthcoming treck to MP. According to weather forecast, its raining there Sad

BIWI · 29/03/2013 09:01

Oh no! But surely it will at least be warm?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/03/2013 09:27

Morning chums Brew

Arse about the needles Fizzy, I only have not-at-all-exciting-metal ones here which you are welcome to, but by the time you get them it will be Tuesday Sad

Little Pink will turn up MOS. I'm delivering the blankets to Katie from World Child Cancer on Tues 9th. If it looks like we will run out of time then BIWI that would be lovely. But I am confident it will roll in.

And have a lovely holiday and hope the weather improves X

BIWI · 29/03/2013 18:09

Given that I need a few days to knit a square you need to let me know sooner rather than later, Pistey!

MOSagain · 29/03/2013 18:23

Sorry it didn't turn up and sorry don't have time to do another.
Dh is rolling his eyes at me packing 4 balls of wool in suitcase

LackaDAISYcal · 29/03/2013 19:57

I should be finished my blanket in time Pistey! I'll try and get it to you by the end of next week! I haven't sued the cream and lilac in the end, but went and bought some rainbow colours of Stylecraft yarn. Now all my family want one too!

As an aside, I know some blankets have been done in fabric. I bought some Alexander Henry fabric aeons ago to line a crochet blanket for a friend's baby, but for one reason and another (the main one being I can't sew for toffee!) I never used it. If anyone can use it for a WoollyHug blanket, I am happy to post it to them. It's jungle animals on a sky blue background and is four fat quarters iirc. I can get exact measurements if needed. Better used by someone than fading into non existence on my craft shelf!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 30/03/2013 14:54

Ooooo lovely Daisy, we'd love to have the fabric, could you send it to me when you post your blanket? Thank you so much X Thanks
