This is Phase 2 of the Little Hugs project.
Since the beginning, the aim of the Little Hugs has been to provide little blankets that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital. Hopefully, Phase 2 will continue to do this and more.

We are launching this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. This is the time of her 21st birthday and we are calling the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, we will send little blankets to children who really need a woolly hug and to feel loved and looked after.

We have been talking to this wonderful organisation World Child Cancer and are arranging for Little Hugs to be sent to children suffering from cancer in low and middle income countries. In these countries their overall chance of survival can be under 10% compared to around 80% in high income countries such as ours.
The first batch of Billie's Blankets will be taken to children in Malawi and Bangladesh.

World Child Cancer's response to our initial idea is below:

'Thank you for your email and your kind offer of support. Your blankets are beautiful and I'm sure they provide great comfort to the children who you make them for.
I'm sure the children would love them. Unfortunately most of the children we see at our projects are not able to survive their cancer due to the poor conditions, lack of knowledge and the high cost of medicine in the worlds poorest countries. In these cases we encourage palliative care for the children through our twinning partners who provide training for local project staff on the importance of this care, especially in pain relief. Psychosocial care is also very important and an area we focus on through supporting parent groups and play therapists. I think your blankets would fit in well with this area.'

How you can help:

By crafting:
You can help by either making a whole Little Hug (see yarn spec)
Or
By making 6" squares, either knitted or crocheted, using Stylecraft Special DK yarn

Or by donating for crafting materials:
If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website or if you do not have Paypal, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste.

Or by donating to World Child Cancer (see below)

*

For all Little Hugs:

Minimum size: 24 inches by 24 inches
If you would like to make a blanket that is bigger, that would be lovely.
The children are aged 0 to 14 so we will need bigger blankets too.

Colours: Your choice.
Although for practical reasons, we advise avoiding white and cream.

Things to avoid:
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.

Materials:
Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic yarn.
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight and make of acrylic yarn. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be washed and dried quickly and easily.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

***

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation.
Money is scarce, they really have so little. In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we have ideas for a craft fundraiser later in the year.
We have set up a Just giving Page here
Your donation is welcome at anytime.

These children need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support Thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family. x

WoollyBack - that's a lovely blanket!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 31/01/2013 16:26

It most certainly is, and now it is here safe and sound. It is just so very beautiful, thank you so much to TheWoollybacksWife. This will really make a difference to a child in great need, so bless you

Thank you doesn't seem enough, wish I could express how deeply grateful we are.

Thanks
TheWoollybacksWife · 31/01/2013 16:37

Glad it's arrived.

I'm playing around with squares for another Billie blanket, but I'm not sure that the colours that I've chosen go together. Would welcome any opinions on mixing Stylecraft shades Raspberry and Candyfloss (these look good together) with Fondant, which looks a bit "In your face".

On the subject of yarn colours I did mean to say that if the squares for Lemon's blanket (that were in the same parcel) are a bit bright for the rest of the colour palette then feel free to put them towards another project. They are in Rowan Cashsoft.

The Deramore 15% off code posted upthread doesn't seem to be working anymore. Anyone know of any good deals on that mixed pack?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/02/2013 21:16

BornToFolk Have a look at Masons for that pack, they often seem to be cheaper.

Woolly - Knotty's very good with colours, maybe PM her if you still need help?

Thanks Thanks

Thanks Thanks Beautiful Billie's Blankets arriving safely today, huge thanks to StellaMarie. Thanks Thanks

Photos on Facebook already Thanks Thanks

GlaikitFizzog · 01/02/2013 21:23

There is a 10% discount on deramores just now DRLTEN and free deliver over £25. Sometimes that's enough to take it cheaper that masons or country crafts.

BornToFolk · 01/02/2013 21:30

Thanks Pistey, order placed!

Thanks
TheWoollybacksWife · 01/02/2013 22:24

Pistey you temptress!

I had managed to give up Facebook not mentioning the fact that I never had anything interesting to post

I have now re-registered to look at all the photos. DD1 has still blocked me though Sad. Don't blame her though - I remember my Uni days and would be mortified if I thought my mother knew what I was up to Blush

Now I'm middle aged and a wild night means two glasses of Shiraz and MN and Ravelry open at the same time while watching Midsomer Murders.

DancesWithWoolEnPointe · 03/02/2013 19:51

Dragged my arse on signing up for this - but I have the time now and definitely do a Billy blanket

I started one of these blankets yesterday and I'm about half way through already Shock. I'm using this pattern and have mostly completed 8 squares. I made the decision to use a bigger hook though so at 5mm the squares are growing much faster than at 4mm.

I'll wait to post it til I have my next angel hug too, and maybe a little hug as well, I may as well get as much as I can into one parcel.

KnottyLocks · 04/02/2013 06:59

Morning, lovely people Smile

MrsDv, you star! Keep going and you'll have enough for a blanket in no time.

Woolly, rock n roll innit Grin

Didi, good going. You must be a very fast hooker! Thank you so much. Smile

Morning everyone Smile

Tis all going so well, smashing Thanks

Fact for the Day : I have never seen Midsomer Murders. However, it must be said I have 'seen' shiraz Wine Grin

DancesWithWoolEnPointe · 04/02/2013 19:36

I have decided what I'm doing - lots of hooked circle squares - if that makes sense, in a variety of colours, ultimately giving either a lovely patchwork polka dot effect or a migraine inducing bollix-up effect.

First square is pale blue dot in dark warm purple square. I'm excited about this.

BornToFolk · 04/02/2013 20:02

Dances, that sounds lovely. Are you using a pattern?

I'm just doing the edging on my Angel Hug now. And I had an email from Masons to say that my pack on Stylecraft is on the way! I plan a Granny square blanket first, then if I have enough, I want to do a Mitred Square blanket, like the Mason Dixon one Rav link. I think that would look really good in lots of colours.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 04/02/2013 20:51

Like the one I'm doing Dances? Sounds lovely, love circles to squares tis my new thing Smile

BorntoFolk - just wow, I am in awe!

Well done MrsDV. You'll have done a whole blanket in no time at this rate.

kateecass · 04/02/2013 22:42

I have almost finished a blanket. Just got to sew in a couple of ends. I just learnt how to crochet hearts so am thinking I'll sew a couple on.

DancesWithWoolEnPointe · 04/02/2013 23:38

I was inspired by yours Pistey - are they for a Billy blanket?I'm also blattently stealing the colour scheme of yours for a blanket for my as yet unborn niece.

BIWI · 05/02/2013 08:46

Square 1 finished. Square 2 started. Not sure how many I'm going to do, but I have two balls of wool and they are massive!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/02/2013 08:53

Morning all Smile

Well done indeed MrsDV and BIWI - just keep going!! Knit BIWI, knit!

Sounds lovely kate and dances Thanks

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 05/02/2013 09:47

morning, half way through my Billie blanket! Deramores currently has 15% off stylecraft so trying hard to resist ordering more wool, I have plenty already

GlaikitFizzog · 05/02/2013 13:23

I'm spamming the wooly threads with this crochet pattern

This has to be included in a woolly hug somewhere!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 05/02/2013 19:43

Fizzy - that's fabulous!
