Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.

When you're back, Pistey, is there a timescale for when you want the squares?

KnottyLocks · 06/01/2013 21:44

Thank you, lovely Blanketeers. You com

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 06/01/2013 21:45

I have started knitting. I hoped we would do one so I took a punt and started with DB greens for Wales! :)

I've been on Lemon's thread since she posted it - it breaks my heart everytime I read it. It's so unfair.

I have several greens & blues, but I was going to add cream to some of them, I appear to have 02 though - does that sound right and is it OK?

Will PM you now Pistey.

KnottyLocks · 06/01/2013 21:47

Thank you, lovely Blanketeers. You complete [stars] Thanks

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/01/2013 21:55

I'll do one, will check my leftovers from previous blankets and see if I need more wool.

GlaikitFizzog · 06/01/2013 22:10

One square completed. Just a simple fairisle heart.

Theodora · 06/01/2013 22:30

Thanks Pistey and Pidj for info on number of rounds. I'm happy to do the last round solid - though will probably need to check back for advice about the corners. (Need to go and buy some wool first!)

Somersaults · 06/01/2013 22:59

That fern is lovely. I will wait and see what colours I get and might give it a go if they're suitable. I'll have a good browse on Ravelry when I get chance for some good nature/music crochet and share if I find anything.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 06/01/2013 23:22

When did John Lewis stop stocking Debbie Bliss?

I know I can get it online from other suppliers, but I like to see the colours and have a bit of a faff about I don't think there's anywhere within 20 miles (maybe more as I'm not sure the DB stockist in Henley on Thames sells the Cashmerino DK) that sells Debbie Bliss now Confused

tribpot · 07/01/2013 00:45

Just been catching up with lemontruffle's posts. I wondered if a celtic knot might be good - there aren't loads of free patterns on Rav but here is a selection.

There's also a nice one in the Refuge e-Book from last year.

MNPin2013 · 07/01/2013 01:05

Thanks orphelia will apply fern to square and thank you glaikitfizzog I have just visited her page and purchased a stash.

GlaikitFizzog · 07/01/2013 06:05

I'll have a go at a Celtic knot Trib. There is a fairisle one I think I can get my head round.

Oh, and morning Brew

RatherBeOnThePiste · 07/01/2013 07:14

Morning all wonderful people Brew Smile

Wonderful, except for tech, I wrote a post about an hour ago and lost it when the site went offline.

I try again Smile

Thank you everyone, you really are truly wonderful Thanks

Theodora - No deadline yet but it will be around 3 0r 4 weeks from now, we'll see how wool deliveries are going before we pinpoint a date, but you have a good while. Thanks

WhoKnows Bless you thank you, glad to have you with us again Thanks

Chipping My JL stocks Debbie Bliss, not that it helps you I'm afraid, that is a shame. Now the 02 is described as 'white' so we'd rather you avoid that if poss, but I have a part DB013 cream here if it is any help? I could pop it in the post today? I think I'd need your address though, don't think I have yours. PM me if I can help.

Somersaults, Fizzy and trib ThanksThanksThanks

MNP Let us know how the fern goes will you? I think I might manage it, have some DB apple here, will give it a whirl.

Catching up with PMs in a bit, I know there are lots there, just need to go and sort my children Smile Confused

Morning all Smile

Love the fern and a Celtic knot sounds perfect.

Thanks to all for your support. Thanks

YoucanringmySleighBells · 07/01/2013 07:48

Can I help? I will pm you Pistey x

Vajazzler · 07/01/2013 08:11

Morning allBrew

Can anyone tell me please how many rows make up their knitted squares?
I did a couple of squares for cups blanket by measuring and they were about 14.5cm each side (sorry my lame ruler only has cm) but then I started on an angel hug and my measuring wasn't very accurate and i ended up with varying sizes Grin
I looked on the WH guide and it says 45ish rows iirc so I made a square that size but it came out 14.5X13cm.
Does anyone else do something different???

Hopefully all PMs replied to, huge thanks to all. The Blanketeers are a marvellous bunch Thanks

Vajazzler - I am sure mine are different. Last time I counted rows I seemed to do lots and lots more than anyone else. Many more than 45 rows. It must all be to do with tension

I think because everyone is so different, the best thing is to knit away and keep measuring. 6 inches is about 15cm I think?

OP posts:
RatherBeOnThePiste · 07/01/2013 08:53

See Joyful is a professional, that's how to do it Grin

I can certainly have a look at colours, we'd certainly know a core palette, but I could only do Rowan and DB, possibly one or two Sublimes, I've not ventured into Artesano territory yet.

I'll have a thinky

OP posts:
Vajazzler · 07/01/2013 09:01

I was just measuring and that was going fine when it was just plain square but when i tried to incorporate a bit of a pattern then it went wrong!

AmberLeaf · 07/01/2013 09:02

Id like to donate [as my knitting isn't good enough!]

I don't think I 'know' Lemontruffles, but my Dad is a fellow COPD sufferer so her thread struck a chord.

On a previous appeal you gave me a knitters address to have some wool sent to via a website? Happy to do that again or whatevers easiest.

Will PM my offer too.
