Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

Morning Claire [espresso]

ClairesTravellingCircus · 27/01/2013 10:46

Thanks Knotty, I need lots of it (12 month old non sleeping twins!)

I can send some proper [cappucino] your way! Smile

tribpot · 27/01/2013 14:52

Crows and knot

Still a lot of ends to sew in!

GlaikitCheiftanOThePuddinRace · 27/01/2013 15:10

Trib they are fab! :)

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 27/01/2013 15:38

Fabulous trib! (is the knot pattern in the crafting guide? - I have had three goes at the cable pattern in the refuge e-book and had to frog it each time).

I've done the two trees for this blanket and other cable patterns for DS2's blanket, but for some reason just can't manage the refuge pattern (the one with the interwoven circles towards the end).

tribpot · 27/01/2013 17:17

Gargh Shredded, I've just read your post as 'is it the knot pattern in the crafting guide?' and been looking to try and find one already in said guide!

No, it's this one - well worth it for a euro, although there are a couple of minor mistakes in the pattern.

I was looking for the Refuge pattern on Ravelry to link to it when I noticed that the whole eBook appears to be available online right now - people might want to grab a copy whilst they can.

I hadn't realised the lattice pattern is by Ann Kingstone, one of our local heroes. The Cair Paravel slippers have a similar motif. I have done it and don't remember finding it too bad - perhaps we need to have a knitalong in the next blanket?

RedRosie · 27/01/2013 19:29

Pitsey ...

I'm a bit behind with Ian the Interim Green Sheep.

I might not quite make the deadline as you know how very very slow I am...

Sad

Are you cross?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/01/2013 22:11

Evening all Wine

Rosie how could I ever be cross with you?! And I LOVE Ian! Just the thought of Ian the Interim Green Sheep makes me arf Grin He will be well worth waiting for. Don't worry, and tickle Pru for me please X

There seem to be a lot of folk worrying about meeting deadlines, both in PMs to me and on the threads. Knotty and I really do understand that lives are busy and things don't always work out as you plan, but please, just PM, no apologies are needed, and no one could ever let us down, we can always work it out!

trib You star - those are fabulous, lemon will really really appreciate those

Heartfelt thanks to all. Starry starriness is all around Thanks

Pitsey - you are a gentlewoman.

I won't be very late, just a bit late.

Pru sends slobber.

:)

Afternoon all Brew [custard cream]

If anyone has used a new pattern for lemontruffles' Woolly Hug it would be lovely to add it to the website. Any links would be marvellous Thanks

Good morning!
I have decided I'm over this stupid cold. Even if it's not entirely true.

No excuses, posting my eight squares in that lovely apple green and soft blue today.

ClairesTravellingCircus · 28/01/2013 18:00

I have used this pattern, not sure if it's new as have not had time to look properly sorry. I did not buy it though, I just went by the picture.

Harp

BIWI · 28/01/2013 19:09

OK. I gave in and joined Ravelry. Only to discover that there is already someone registered called BIWI. Angry

So I've joined as TheRealBIWI - but I can't find any of you there. Have you lured me there under false pretences?!

Snapespeare · 28/01/2013 19:28

I can't find my darning needle, so I haven't sewn in my ends, but I don't have time to go to a shop to buy one and go to the post office before deadline (if it's still the 31st?) I'm sorry! Blush

Also! Could someone very kindly PM me a receiving address for finished squares? Thank you!

TheWoollybacksWife · 28/01/2013 19:31

I'm there BIWI as WoollybacksWife. Only I'm a bit boring not a prolific Ravelry user - I just search for patterns and dip in and out of the MN groups.

BIWI · 28/01/2013 19:33

I can't even find any of the MN groups! Am I just being dense?

BIWI · 28/01/2013 19:33

Ah yes. I was, apparently!

GlaikitFizzog · 28/01/2013 19:35

I'm on my phone so.hopefully this works! www.ravelry.com/groups/woolly-hugs

BIWI · 28/01/2013 19:38

I'm there, Glaikit!

GlaikitFizzog · 28/01/2013 19:40

god that took ages to post! welcome to.the dark side biwi!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/01/2013 19:48

BIWI - You on Ravelry then?
