Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

Evening, lovely woolly folk.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 07/01/2013 21:52

WednesdayNext - hmm - sounds like it might just be that they have stopped selling it online then? Which seems really odd to me. Anyway, will have a think about what else I need and then call the 'local' one to see what they have in stock

Evening! Have been looking on-line at colours as my local wool shop was closed today and wondered if anyone knew whether the Debbie Bliss airforce would be an appropriate colour. It looks silvery blue, which fits the brief, but has anyone seen this 'in the flesh' to check whether it is ok?
Thanks so much x.

PurplePidjin · 07/01/2013 23:43

Joyful, i get 4 to the inch so ch 26 tc in 3rd from hook :)

StopEatingThatMud · 08/01/2013 00:08

Just PM'd you Pistey.

Worrying now I won't be able to get my square the right size, I'm still very new to crochet and I've not done anything "serious" thats had to be a certain size up til now and I'm not sure my tensions quite what it should be. Think I best get practicing to see how many stitches I'm going to need.

Also it is ok to ask for donated wool isn't it? This is the first time I've felt confident to sign up for a WH project so don't really know how it works. I feel like I should be providing my own? Only all my own is cheapy baby pinks and purples from the likes of Wilkinsons and Dunelm as I have no local independent nice wool shops and am totally overwhelmed every time I look online and get scared off from looking for a while.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 08/01/2013 00:40

Theodora I've used airforce. It's a greyish blue, I quite like it (and it goes with the apple, denim blue and cream.

PurplePidjin · 08/01/2013 05:43

Welcome along, Mud! Please don't worry about "quality" - love is far more important here. Grannies are great for getting to the right(ish) size if that's something you're confident doing?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/01/2013 05:57

Morning all Brew

Theodora Knotty and I are looking at colours, we had a request yesterday for some numbers of colours of the core palette we use, just as recommendations. I've looked at the DB and the Rowan, and she will be able to look at the sublime in the wool in the next few weeks. Airforce 046 is lovely. Thank you. I shall PM you the list but what lovely Shredded says is true about the colours combining well. Hopefully I can get the beginning of the list up today, it really is hard to see online isn't it?

Mud lovely - your square will be lovely, because you will have made it with thought and love for lemon. That's the bit that matters.

And yes it is more than OK to ask for donated wool, I am coming to your PM right now, more than happy to sort you out.

Off to PMs, huge thanks to all Smile Thanks

I've just found out I can get the Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK013 on eBay.(I'm in Canada so getting the right yarn to help with blankets has been daunting me - I'm quite thrilled :)).
Do you still need squares?
If yes I'll order the wool tomorrow.
How many squares do you need?

If you could post or PM exact colours (I haven't read through the entire thread) I can order a few and make several squares.

I've just recently started crocheting again and have rediscovered how much I love it and that I'm actually still reasonably good at it.

Would love to help.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/01/2013 06:13

And we'd love to have you Jacks, and very pleased to be able to add you to our band of International Blanketeers Thanks

I shall come and PM you right now Smile

KnottyLocks · 08/01/2013 07:51

Morning, gorgeous Woollies Brew

Skoggy · 08/01/2013 08:18

Good morning all!
Everyone refreshed and ready for a new day? Ok... so that was a bit of sarcasm. Asking that on a forum full of Mums. lol I've got my landlord coming over at 0930 (how early?!?!). I'm hoping he is going to end our contract so we can find somewhere else to live. The passage out the kitchen is rife with 3 different types of mould, NOT good. The only way to fix it properly is to redone the shoddy building work.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/01/2013 08:35

No, that isn't good Skoggy, fingers crossed you get the result you want X

Hoping to hear news of lots of woolly arrivals today Smile Thanks
