I am having major crochet envy looking at those squares. They are stunning.

Thank you BlushGrin

I can only give credit to excellent patterns - Attic24's Blooming Flower Cushion and Croco-Dahlia from Ravelry (though I had to really bodge the last round on that one as was about 3-feet away from running out of yarn!).

I was just wondering if the squares I made for Expat's and Griaffe's blankets had been received yet?

Gorgeous Umami :)

I'm going to get on the pooter and get pics uploaded tonight. Not least so my donor can see what I've been up, squeezing every last inch out of the ball!

As an aside, why not the Debbie Bliss baby cashmerino? I read it was the same composition as the normal dk and I've always been flummoxed by the need for two names.

Its slightly thinner, is all. Makes the blanket slightly uneven :)

I can't find the original - it's not turning up on my 'threads you're on' list and searches Confused. I'll try again

Umami - those are really gorgeous. You inspired me and I had a go at the croco-dahlia too. I don't think mine's as nice as yours but it's ok, I was really impressed I could follow the pattern. I'm now having a go at the Blooming flower but how do I turn the circle into a square?

Count how many stitches or spaces you have and divide by 4. Work a corner at the beginning of the row (ch2, 2tc, ch1, 3tc in same place) then either evenly spaced clusters or tc along for however many stitches you worked out. When you get there, work another corner (3tc, ch1, 3tc in same place) Repeat til you get back to your first corner.

If you're really clever and want it geometrically square, you can work varying amounts of tc, htc and dc across the row to compensate for the curve of the circle. Eg, if your solid circle was 32 sts round, you'd work your first corner the tc in next 2, htc, dc, htc in next 3, tc in next 2, corner. Repeat. The next row would be straight tc between corners.

Does that make any sense? I haven't finished my first Brew of the day yet!

What Pidj said!

I think I basically did what Pisj has outlined above, but in a more made up way! You may be able to see in the picture that the rounds of my square (???) are quite eye-bendingly woobly as I try to get it properly square by doing dc/htc/tc/possibly made up longer stitch to even the sides out.

Quadruple makes far more sense!

I'm sure that when my Nan taught me to crochet, many moons ago, the basic stitch she taught me was yo, through st, yo, back, yo, through 1, yo, through 2, yo, through 2. Is that a real stitch, or did she make that up the same way she always made up the rules for Patience?

No idea but i like it!

Thanks, that was more or less what I was thinking but hoped there would be a 'proper' way of doing it so I didn't have to make it up. I shall carry on with the making it up method then.

Umami - that sounds like one of the stitches my grandma taught me but she never had a name for it. I was always a bit convinced she'd made it up as she was in the early stages of Altzheimer's when she was teaching me to crochet. It's nice to know someone else out there uses that crazy stitch and not just her.

I do believe that I thought that was treble for many years. I also thought treble treble was just a group of three trebles, as in a standard granny square. Yo yo yo was a complete mystery to me!

Treble treble! I'd forgotten about them! I think that's what I've been calling extended treble. Wow, blast from the past :o

When I made my first woolly hug, for Edgar's blanket, I was doing it all from memory of what my Nan taught me, hand memory, and a bit of Googling when I got really stuck. She always used to seem to just make things up as she went, so that's what I did. Started fairly well with a sort of wheel pattern at the centre, but then I think I ended up doing about 5 yos in some stitches to make a kind of quintuple treble thing in order to square my circle.

Not much has changed, really! Grin

Wow Unami, those are something to aspire to.

Smile

I have just played with basic palin/purl and simple crochet to create patterns and texture with my ones for current blanket.
So they are basic but not as 'plain' as my first ones.
I am quietly chuffed with myself Smile

Franki, you should be loudly chuffed with yourself! Mixed media squares! Thanks
