I'm going to give the MN Star a bash today maybe, I'm just going to need clarification on a few of those abbreviations!

Is sk a typo and should be sl? Or is sk something I don't know about yet?

What is extc?

And I might know what picot is from my last star but I could do with a brief explanation just so I know I'm doing it right!

Don't worry if these are too hard to explain online! I might just have to make a trip out somewhere one day to meet and learn!

PurplePidjin · 07/08/2012 08:55

Sk = skip. So you crochet in every other stitch of the previous round

Extc = extended treble crochet. Yarn over twice, through st, yo, back through st - 4 loops on hook - yo, through 2 loops, yo, through 2 loops, yo, through remaining 2 loops

:)

I'm having a housework and recovery day after a frantic week away with work, so will be around for questions if needed

PurplePidjin · 07/08/2012 08:56

Picot = dc, ch2, sl st into dc.

MrsShrek3 · 07/08/2012 09:14

(even tho you are all talking crochetspeak and I don't understand word Wink )

Somersaults · 07/08/2012 09:33

Thanks Pidjin, I'm going to try that today :)

Somersaults · 07/08/2012 10:06

Ok update:

First try somehow I ended up with six loop spaces and six points in my star so I've unravelled and will try again after DD has gone down for her nap. I'll get there! Everything else I've crocheted so far has been unravelled at least three times before I've figured it out. Every new attempt is new learning!

PurplePidjin · 07/08/2012 10:44

You can have as many points as you like as long as the look even :)

nickelbarapasaurus · 07/08/2012 10:51

Somersaults - i've been at it for years, but have only ever been any good at the granny squares (3 trebles then a gap, into the previous row's gap).

Because of the blankets, I learned how to change colours correctly (at the end of each row)
(i still don't know if i'm doing it correctly, but it works better than the massive knot i used to do!)
and also I learned how to start a new row properly too - I used to just make a mess by trying to carry on without extending into the new row - it was always obvious where I'd done it!

So in my desperation at trying to get DD to nap we walked all the wy to the library and I borrowed a book called The Happy Hooker so I shall be a pro in no time! But she's still not napping so I can't really get on with trying it all!

I'm not sure enough of everything to be daring enough to try changing colours yet I don't think.

check out youtube videos wherever you can.

there are some excellent tutorials, and you can rewind them

pidj - thank you for the star instructions and the translation. I will have a go later.

These were the fruits of my labour last night. I particularly like the squishy flower, which was easier than I expected.

PurplePidjin · 07/08/2012 15:03

You can make a flower from the star pattern.

Ignore the last row.
At end of penultimate row, sl st to the post of the st from round 2. Ch 3, dc in post of next round 2 st. Carry on to make 5 new loops, then repeat penultimate row.

I'd have to try it but you might get a 3rd and possibly 4th set of petals this way for a really squishy flower :o

LackaDAISYcal · 07/08/2012 15:06

Excellent granny square tutorial

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 07/08/2012 15:08

Pidjin, apologies for my denseness, but does that mean you make new loops within the same circle and carry on going around on top of the previous petals (I think I know what I mean)?

The squishy one I made was based a long chain, which rolled itself up as you went along.

PurplePidjin · 07/08/2012 15:26

Yes. You use the sticky out bits below the first set of petals to make a new set of petals on top. I'll attempt a photo tutorial later on here if you like?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 07/08/2012 15:30

I think I know what you mean. I was hoping to have a go this morning since it is raining and not beach weather, but DH and DCs are developing cabin fever so we are going out for a walk.

PurplePidjin · 07/08/2012 17:15

So send them and enjoy the peace :o

PurplePidjin · 07/08/2012 20:20

How's everyone doing?

DancesWithWoolsEnPointe · 07/08/2012 20:54

Evening all - is this where you hide? I wrote a long introductory ramble in the team hooker thread last night, but no one was there... So this time all you are getting is: Evening, I'm dances, I've been knitting for the blankets until now, this is my first go ever a crochet.

PurplePidjin · 07/08/2012 21:14

You can post pictures on this thread, Dances...

PurplePidjin · 07/08/2012 21:15

.

Somersaults · 07/08/2012 21:22

I've managed a two layered flower (sort of) this afternoon. Somehow the top layer ended up with six petals and the bottom layer only five...

I seem to struggle counting stitches I think and always end up with too few or too many and then I have to wing it and hope it turns out okay! It usually turns out with either too much or too little of something like petals or points!

I've also knitted a little pink heart to stitch onto a square and begun a star stitch square tonight. Thankfully DD went down quickly and easily tonight so I've had some time.

DancesWithWoolsEnPointe · 07/08/2012 21:22

I see that! How exciting!

PurplePidjin · 07/08/2012 21:24

Yay, Somersaults :o
