Following on from the terrible news of the loss of Mumof2TeenBoys' ds, a new Woolly Hugs project has been started and, as ever, MNers have stepped up to offer whatever little comfort we can to Mumof and her family. We also keep close in our thoughts Aillidh, the dd of expatinscotland, who died yesterday.

We've put together some general info mostly about knitting but with some crochet bits thrown in, which should get you started but please feel free to ask for any help - I'm not sure if the crocheters are going to set up a new support thread but their current one is found here.

Please dive in - we will inevitably end up talking bollocks rubbish at some point but all are welcome aboard.

Sorry to hear that you were pulling out as well Barbara (I guess that's what frogging means? I've seen it a few times on these threads but hadn't come across it before [smile).

Good idea about calling out for wool - I will try that if it happens again. Thanks!

prettybird · 23/07/2012 11:56

"Frogging" is "rip it, rippit" (Get it?! Wink) while tinking is literally knit backwards. It's obvious when someone explains it but I too had to be told Grin

Glaikit · 23/07/2012 12:47

Pretty are you back in the homeland now? Are we on for tomorrow?

Glaikit · 23/07/2012 12:54

Just saw your other post, ignore the above!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 23/07/2012 13:10

thanks prettybird Smile. The lighthouse was definitely a frog rather than a tink Grin.

I consoled myself by making a rather spiffy mitred striped square in two shades of pink.

Hello all, am back in the land of the knitting after being squirreled away in my home office secret writer's enclave. I have missed knitting, badly.

Anyway... it's DH's and my 7th wedding anniversary next Monday, which as I'm sure you all know, is wool or in my book, yarn because he won't know the difference, although to be honest I couldn't tell by looking. Soooo... can anyone think of anything super-quick I could knock up for him?? Not a willy-warmer...

PurplePidjin · 23/07/2012 16:41

Congratulations, Minnie, on the boom and the anniversary!

What's he into? Eg my dp likes running so i once made him a neon hat for winter and turned it into a traffic cone because he picked orange

Golf - club covers. Outdoor pursuits - hat/fingerless gloves. D&D/other RPG - multi-faceted dice (i know you can get crochet patterns for these). Motorbikes - mobius scarf for the cold bit between lid and jacket...

tribpot · 23/07/2012 16:47

Reversible cables anyone? I haven't tried this yet.

Minnie - well done on your writerly achievement! How about ... and I say this with some trepidation ... a brioche scarf? Dave the Donkey and his friend Colin the Camel (I just made that up) make a loverly 2-colour brioche in appropriately manly colours.

wank phone sock?

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 23/07/2012 16:52

woo hoo! Congrats Minnie! could you knit him a case for his phone/laptop/I pad etc?
bit of bad news on my side, the job I was supposed to start has been cancelled due to the budget. Am so disappointed so am furiously eating jaffa cakes applying for more jobs online. I have an interview for Thursday already but not at all in my chosen area.

MinnieBar · 23/07/2012 16:54

I never managed the two-colour brioche Trib, and I think I might end up wrapping it around his neck if I did. I'm tempted by a tie like this, but it uses a yarn not apparently available in the UK as far as I can tell or this one but then I'd still have to buy new needles and yarn and I've got the DCs every bloomin second of the day all week.

Hmm. Cashmere-blend socks from M&S it might have to be...

MinnieBar · 23/07/2012 16:55

Oh that is severely crappy news Formerly.

He does have a Kindle... will go check patterns...

Glaikit · 23/07/2012 17:09

monkey?

tie?

romantic

elvis wig?????

Glaikit · 23/07/2012 17:11

Omg! That's the exact Same tie I linked to! Spooky!

tribpot · 23/07/2012 17:25

Formerly, that is crap news indeed :( :( Fingers crossed something turns up for you.

I like those ties - amazingly you can knit most knitting patterns in yarn other than the one the pattern specifies, Minnie Wink how about something mad like Zauberball? And he'll have to wear it, because you made it for him Wink

Alternatively, and I actually do like these, what about a Nordic Tweed or a Panama?

OP posts:
MinnieBar · 23/07/2012 18:24

Well on the one hand I do know that you can use an alternate yarn, on the other I couldn't work out which ones - with the stripey tie, it's a 'self-striping' wool, and I couldn't even begin to work out an appropriate suitable alternative.

Would those second two links be suitable for ties d'you think then Trib?

tribpot · 23/07/2012 19:01

Minnie - self-striping is really just any wool that has more than one colour painted on in a sequence. The Felici looks similar to others that are around - in fact one of my faves is the Van Gogh sock yarn, if your DH is a fan. (Also the gorgeous Knitcol - maybe Botticelli or Renoir?)

From reading the comments on Ravelry, it sounds like the main problem is weighting the knitting down to make it tie-ish, with a silk lining. The Panama is quite floaty (I think - certainly the Lima is) so might need a slightly heavier backing, but I'd go for it.

Does anyone remember the infamous heart square? I am currently working on it but have printed out a new one to work from. I seem to remember that there was a mistake on the original pattern, can anyone remember where it was? It was where there was a K1 in the middle of the line where there shouldn't have been one.
Pattern is [[http://www.sugarncream.com/pattern.php?PID=6175 here]

chipmonkey · 23/07/2012 20:08

Or here even!

MinnieBar · 23/07/2012 20:49

Found it chipmonkey: Gleamingheels said

I think there's a little error in the text on row 33, though am happy to be corrected

33rd row: (K1. P1) twice. K4. K2tog. yo. K2. P6. K1. P6. K2. K1. yo. ssk. K4. (P1. K1) twice.

I think the K1 in bold should be ignored as it stops the pattern being symmetrical and leaves you with one too few stitches for the K4, seed stitch4 at the end

Trib checked it out, and agreed:

That K1 between the K2 and the yo is wrong, there's no stitch there.

So, to clarify, it should read:

33rd row: (K1. P1) twice. K4. K2tog. yo. K2. P6. K1. P6. K2. yo. ssk. K4. (P1. K1) twice.

Not that I'm lazy or owt, but lining a tie? Really? Sounds too much like hard work.

Although I do at least now get stripey wool and I have in fact used it before Blush. I knitted DD1 a top in this which actually looked really good, although it's a little heavy so I think the straps could ideally do with adjusting although that sounds like a bit of a pain too. She put it on once, said 'take it off now' and hasn't worn it since Angry Grin

tribpot · 23/07/2012 21:00

Well done Minnie! I had remembered it was about row 34 but you beat me to it Grin However chip - you are doing the original heart pattern with the Yawning Chasms of Doom in it. Was that your intention? I am obviously prejudiced in favour of my revised pattern but you may wish to consider alternatives Grin

I agree, lining a tie does seem somewhat faffy. How about a man cowl or this guy next door cowl?

I like that coloured yarn, though!
