We recently heard the devastating news that Matildawormwood's beautiful baby son, Daniel, was born sleeping.
Matilda's thread is here. Our thoughts are with Daniel and Matilda?s family.

We have offered to make a blanket and Matilda is very touched that people would do this for their family. We hope that the blanket may give whatever comfort it can to them all.

So, we need knitters and crocheters. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.
At the moment there is quite a lot of wool still in circulation because of the current blanket projects. Where possible, we hope to 'recycle' as much as we possibly can.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have and will put together the blanket.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool.

One ball should make at least 2 x 6' squares.
If you are a crocheter and/or an experienced knitter needing donor wool, could you let us know when you PM us as we can send part balls from the 'recycled' wool stash. Thanks.

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • knitters cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

We are also introducing two new yarns:

*Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
It's another 'silky' wool that fits in nicely alongside the DB and Rowan wools and can be combined with both.

*Artesano Superwash Merino DK.
Although it isn't as silky as our normal wools, it is soft yet hardy and washes in the same way. It has the added appeal of being a good ethical option and is very reasonably priced.

The Colours:

Blues, greens and cream.

Ideas for squares:

The initials D and N

Motifs: Stars, trees, birds, hearts, snowdrops, sailing boats.

Please don't feel daunted by this as we really love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on the WoollyHugs website. We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs.

As always, thank you so much for your support. Thanks Thanks Thanks

It's OK, Knotty, I accidentally added some yarn to my virtual basket, accidentally clicked "checkout" and then accidentally typed in my paypal password and clicked a few more times. Easily done, easily done... Blush

On the plus side, I either won't need a donor next time or can add extra colours for variety...

Ballard Blue, Mirage, sweet and one of the greys in the Cucumber Patch bargain section.

PurplePidjin · 12/06/2012 09:32

MOS, please do plain ones so I've got something to sew little boats to! It works much better sewing motifs to knit (garter or stocking) squares than trying to find the right space on a granny imo :)

MOSagain · 12/06/2012 09:40

Grin happy to stick with my plain, don't want to confuse myself just yet. I've ordered debbie bliss pale blue (number 8) and a darker blue (think number 44) hope they will work well with your boats? Grin

PS whats a granny?

SoupDragon · 12/06/2012 09:43

I am planning something like this with blue at the bottom for the sea and then... well something for the sky. And maybe a sun.

LinzerTorte · 12/06/2012 09:45

I can do plain ones, Pidj. Smile (In the sense that they're all I'm capable of doing.)

KnottyLocks · 12/06/2012 09:46

That sounds lovely, Soupy.

Mos, crochet granny squares!

MOS - stocking stitch (when one side is "smooth" and the other looks like dense garter/knitting stitches) is when you alternate a row of knitting with a row of purl (the back-to-front stitch you saw your mum doing).

One you've mastered that, come back and we'll get you on to moss stitch or rib!

PurplePidjin · 12/06/2012 09:54

Quite happy! I can make a whole flotilla of little boats, they take about 15 minutes each, i just need lots of plain squares to attach them to :o

Plain squares are good plain squares are essential

Its really weird how the mention of knitting makes my skin crawl. My gran tried to teach me to knit when I was, I donut know, 7 or so but I hated the feeling of the scratchy wool over my fingers. Every time I think of knitting I get that teeth-itching skin crawly feeling - crochet doesn't have the same effect Confused

Am having problems ordering wool using my phone so will order this evening when I can get onto a computer

Really sorry for the delay

KnottyLocks · 12/06/2012 11:10

Milky, it's not a problem. Smile

midoriway · 12/06/2012 13:55

lookathergo I'll be up for that. I'm in the Jewellery Quarter.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/06/2012 14:39

Lunchtime Smile I'm away to my PMs. I may be a while!

Milky - no apology needed, honestly not a problem.

Soupy - that's really good news [thumbsupemoticon]

DontCallMeYourMajesty · 12/06/2012 15:47

I've done a diagonal square - sixth square here, second actual picture: theghanaproject.wordpress.com/about/

Quite good for the dimensionally challenged (ie me) as you can measure the actual knitting, rather than stitches on a needle and hoping for the best. But I would recommend starting to decrease a little before the width hits 6", as it continues to grow a bit.

I was going to do half blue and half green, but I realised my 25g of yarn was 16g green and 9g blue, so it's half green, the stripes, then a little blue corner to finish off. I even managed to mend a dropped stitch!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/06/2012 16:35

Lovely! That's to the square, not the dropping of stitches Grin

Not to alarm anyone, because she does tend to be super quick, the first squares for Matilda have arrived. Smile Thanks

Thanks DutchOma : Beautiful knits, different shades of blue, initials D & N. Star

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/06/2012 19:16

A very busy day for PMs Smile Do bear with me, I shall get there Wine I am hoping to hear of wool arriving from donors very soon.

We are really pleased with how it's going so far Thanks

LookAtHerGo · 12/06/2012 20:51

Sorry for the delay, 9 month old takes a lot of time away from posting :)

Re the wool shop in Birmingham, my friend recommended city knits, it's in Bourneville, they do have a website, I did look at it a week or two ago but could only see cashmerino baby on their website, but that was before I knew of the other wools we can use. I've not been to the shop myself, I haven't time this week, but I might go for a gander next week :)

Cool midori do you work in the week? I have a small person who would need to come with me, but she's fine in her pushchair for an hour usually with toys. Even if she wanted to come out a bit I could do that. There is the coffee shop at the MAC, or the cafe in Cannon Hill park. Unless you wanted to meet in town at Starbucks/costa. Likewise for anyone else who wanted to join in in the area. :) droitwich would you like to join us?

I have my woolly ends, lovely colours. I'm going to attempt this As one of my squares.

tribpot · 12/06/2012 21:05

LookAtHerGo - I think this is the website of the shop in question. They don't sell any of the yarns I'm afraid. It is fairly unusual to find them in the shops.

Hope you have a good meet-up though!

LookAtHerGo · 12/06/2012 21:11

Yep that's the site :) I must admit I should have linked to it myself. My brain is fried :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/06/2012 21:59

Lots more wool is on the way Thanks
