We recently heard the devastating news that Matildawormwood's beautiful baby son, Daniel, was born sleeping.
Matilda's thread is here. Our thoughts are with Daniel and Matilda?s family.

We have offered to make a blanket and Matilda is very touched that people would do this for their family. We hope that the blanket may give whatever comfort it can to them all.

So, we need knitters and crocheters. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.
At the moment there is quite a lot of wool still in circulation because of the current blanket projects. Where possible, we hope to 'recycle' as much as we possibly can.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have and will put together the blanket.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool.

One ball should make at least 2 x 6' squares.
If you are a crocheter and/or an experienced knitter needing donor wool, could you let us know when you PM us as we can send part balls from the 'recycled' wool stash. Thanks.

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • knitters cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

We are also introducing two new yarns:

*Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
It's another 'silky' wool that fits in nicely alongside the DB and Rowan wools and can be combined with both.

*Artesano Superwash Merino DK.
Although it isn't as silky as our normal wools, it is soft yet hardy and washes in the same way. It has the added appeal of being a good ethical option and is very reasonably priced.

The Colours:

Blues, greens and cream.

Ideas for squares:

The initials D and N

Motifs: Stars, trees, birds, hearts, snowdrops, sailing boats.

Please don't feel daunted by this as we really love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on the WoollyHugs website. We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs.

As always, thank you so much for your support. Thanks Thanks Thanks

I will be wonderfully versatile at creating beautiful plain squares with only plain and purl Smile

droitwichmummy · 12/06/2012 23:29

I'm up for a Birmingham blanketeers meet. I work city centre.
Just racing to finish a cat square for DS who requested one after seeing the mouse I did before my donor wool arrives.

droitwichmummy · 12/06/2012 23:30

Oh I also now know that the Birmingham House of Fraser stock Rowan. Will check if they stock the right one for us and report back tomorrow

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/06/2012 06:29

Morning lovely BIWI Brew

Rather worryingly, the sun is out here, but I can't imagine it will last for long Grin

SoupDragon · 13/06/2012 06:57

Sun. Sun! It's a miracle!

DaisySteiner · 13/06/2012 07:01

Am I too late to offer to knit some squares?

KnottyLocks · 13/06/2012 07:47

Hi Daisy Smile

PM Pistey to let her know. You're not too late, many thanks.

No sun here, but no sign of any precipitation yet either...

HairyPotter · 13/06/2012 10:51

Well I found the scabby ball of wool and have been having a go. I can remember how to cast on, knit and purl. Can't cast off but will worry about that later.

What should I do for my square? It needs to be foolproof btw Grin

I'm hoping my wool comes tomorrow, are Black Sheep pretty fast for delivery? I ordered on Monday.

PurplePidjin · 13/06/2012 11:20

Tribpot et al have put together a myriad of patterns and suggestions, Hairy, come along and join in!

tribpot · 13/06/2012 12:03

Hairy, do jump in on our support thread, and there's consolidated info to get you started as well.

MOSagain · 13/06/2012 15:49

Yay, my wool arrived today. Hope I can remember how to cast on Grin

prettybird · 13/06/2012 16:32

The wool that I accidentally bought from Black Sheep Wool arrived today. I managed to get a ball of Forest Green Debbie Bliss Cashmerino dk half price Smile plus the Facebook discount Smile

The Sublime dk looks nice - got Julep (a sort of pale blue/green) and Powder Puff.

However the Powder Puff, that looked creamy on the computer looks more like a pale pink/beige (have just asked ds what colour it was he and he wasn't sure if it was pink or brown Confused). Would it be ok for Matilda's blanket or should I keep it for another blanket?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/06/2012 16:43

pretty Maybe keep the powder puff for another time if both of you think it is pinky? You have two there which should keep you out of mischief for a little while? Grin Is that OK?

Be interesting to see what you think of the Sublime.

MOS - like riding a bike it is!

prettybird · 13/06/2012 16:49

Will do Pistey I had been planning on trying a three colour weave knit. I'll just have to try Tribpot's two colour brioche then Grin

The nice thing about my accidental order when I just looked out of interest and found myself at the checkout Blush was that I was able to give Mumsnet the credit for how I found out about Black Sheep Wool :)

prettybird · 13/06/2012 16:51

There should have been a full stop after Pistey to make that paragraph make more sense Blush

SoupDragon · 13/06/2012 17:14

It is so easy to accidentally buy wool isn't it?

droitwichmummy · 13/06/2012 17:24

Birmingham blanketeers Have whizzed into House of Fraser in Birmingham and it does stock the Rowan Cashsoft dk Grin £5.75 a ball and lots of colours - just don't blame me if you accidentally buy them all!

prettybird · 13/06/2012 17:59

'tis so true Soupdragon. Grin

I've hidden the wool from dh and will present it later as "you mean this old wool.... I've had it aaaaages " WinkGrin

PurplePidjin · 13/06/2012 18:35

John Lewis carry both the Cashsoft and Cashmerino, although it's much cheaper online. I like to squish my wool first, though Blush

KnottyLocks · 13/06/2012 19:40

Pretty, I still manage that with clothes but have had to give up the woolly charade to a point. Apart from the stuff that gets delivered when he's not here Grin
