We recently heard the devastating news that Matildawormwood's beautiful baby son, Daniel, was born sleeping.
Matilda's thread is here. Our thoughts are with Daniel and Matilda?s family.

We have offered to make a blanket and Matilda is very touched that people would do this for their family. We hope that the blanket may give whatever comfort it can to them all.

So, we need knitters and crocheters. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.
At the moment there is quite a lot of wool still in circulation because of the current blanket projects. Where possible, we hope to 'recycle' as much as we possibly can.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have and will put together the blanket.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool.

One ball should make at least 2 x 6' squares.
If you are a crocheter and/or an experienced knitter needing donor wool, could you let us know when you PM us as we can send part balls from the 'recycled' wool stash. Thanks.

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • knitters cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

We are also introducing two new yarns:

*Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
It's another 'silky' wool that fits in nicely alongside the DB and Rowan wools and can be combined with both.

*Artesano Superwash Merino DK.
Although it isn't as silky as our normal wools, it is soft yet hardy and washes in the same way. It has the added appeal of being a good ethical option and is very reasonably priced.

The Colours:

Blues, greens and cream.

Ideas for squares:

The initials D and N

Motifs: Stars, trees, birds, hearts, snowdrops, sailing boats.

Please don't feel daunted by this as we really love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on the WoollyHugs website. We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs.

As always, thank you so much for your support. Thanks Thanks Thanks

matildawormwood · 15/06/2012 19:13

Hello all. It feels a bit wrong to be looking at this thread - a bit like peeking at your pressies before Christmas - but I just really wanted to say how very touched I am at the thought of you all knitting this blanket for us. I have so little to remember my darling boy by, this really will be something for us to cherish and I look forward to snuggling up under it with my DD and when she's older, telling her the story behind it. The fact that I recognise a few names on here who I know have had similar losses makes it even more special. I can't knit for toffee but you've inspired me to learn and I intend to do the same for someone else a bit further down the line (bear with me as it could take some time - I'm useless at anything crafty). Thank you ladies. It means a lot XX

PurplePidjin · 15/06/2012 19:23

Matilda, this is your thread as much as ours and it's an honour to have you join us Thanks

KnottyLocks · 15/06/2012 19:28

Matilda, thank you so much for popping in to see us. I know it will mean so much to the wonderful folks who are involved with your blanket.
We truly hope that knowing so many people are thinking of you, and wanting to give you and your family some comfort, helps in some small way.
Your darling boy will live long in our memories. x

If you ever need any help with the knitting, we have many here who would be only to happy to offer advice Smile

tribpot · 15/06/2012 19:33

Welcome, Matilda, thanks for popping by. Please do shout if we can help get you started at all.

rubycon, sorry your post got missed in the rush of utter nonsense Friday afternoon fun on our support thread. Do come back if you need anything!

PurplePidjin · 15/06/2012 19:35

Knotty, Trib's got a map going over on the support thread (long story) of blanketeers who have volunteered an approximate location - I'm sure we can find a coach/buddy without too much hassle :)

giraffesCantFitInThePalace · 15/06/2012 19:37

Hello, just wanted to say well done to all you lovely knitters and donors. Have spent the afternoon with expats dd and she is all sniggled up in her special blanket. :) She was upset and she asked for her magic blanket.

KnottyLocks · 15/06/2012 19:41

Aww, that's lovely Giraffes. Thanks Smile

Found this thread and really touched me as I sit here with my little boy realising could happen to anyone. Thinking of Matilda and Daniel.

i have no crafting talent but would like to donate wool if needed still to the lovely crafters. Will pm.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 15/06/2012 20:19

[gentle squeeze] for Matilda, thanks so much for dropping by.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 15/06/2012 20:33

How lovely of you Matilda for posting :) All of us are thinking of you and Daniel.
Lovely too to hear how woolly hugs help from Giraffes

KnottyLocks · 15/06/2012 20:46

We can't take the credit for the organisation and putting together of Expat's DD's blanket. We made squares, along with many others.
It is a wonderful thing how a blanket can symbolise such humanity, isn't it?

Thank you ladies. I shall pop in from time to time and will be reading even if I don't post. It will cheer me up. XX

Bewitching Brummy Botherers of yarn.
So far it is Droitwichmummy, Lookathergo and me.
I propose 2 possible venues- City Centre, at the Urban Coffee Shop, opposite Hotel de Vin. Very central, nice people run it, they are forever having random community groups filling the place, a stroll past the cathedral to House of Fraser and its wool shop, but no parking. Or the MAC coffee shop.
When? I am pretty flexible, but would like to avoid weekends.

City Knits website is based at a yarn shop in Bourneville called Christine?s. I went there for the first time this week. Terrific range of stuff, including the full colour range of lace weight Rowan, but most of it is behind the counter, so the opportunities for browsing, groping, touching, licking etc feel a little limited, but that might just be me.

droitwichmummy · 15/06/2012 21:37

I work FT City Centre but might manage a quick lunchtime or after work meet up at the Urban Coffee Shop. MAC would have to be a weekend for me

OpheliaBumps · 15/06/2012 21:58

Matilda how lovely of you to drop in, I only hope all of our contributions offer you some comfort, I know they are all made with so much love.

Well, my squares are ready, in green, one with hearts and one with a star. I've had to crack on as we go away next week, and I've got a couple of other projects on that I need to complete soon! I've pm'd Pistey to check the address, and I should get them posted on Monday.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/06/2012 22:40

Just replying to all PMs Thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/06/2012 23:19
