This is a continuation of our thread supporting MNers creating blanket squares for Woolly Hugs. All are welcome and I'm hoping to post a link soon to a collection of our fave patterns, pics and links to keep them all in one place. In the meantime, this new thread will allow phone-based MNers like RedRosie to return from Special Phone Exile where she goes whenever the thread has too many messages on.

This is a thread of peace where knitters and crocheters, donors and crafters are all equally welcome.

Apparently the best way of concealing needles is inside an umbrella So, you need a circular with interchangeable tips, tips off and inside your compact brolly alongside the spokes. Settle in in the cabin, reassemble then off you go clickety click!

Or alternatively, wooden ones inside a pencil case full of pencils.

SoupDragon · 12/06/2012 14:20

I bought myself a wooden hook specifically for my long haul flight this summer :)
I'm going to pack my metal ones in the suitcase.

'ello

PurplePidjin · 12/06/2012 15:17

I want to be able to crochet on the plane - from experience i know there'll be little opportunity while we're there did i mention the 6 teenagers? And the 22 weeks pregnant?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/06/2012 15:28

Mine got taken at Heathrow and it was a metal one. It is the airport rather than the airline who decide iyswim? I believe bamboo and wood are fine in theory, although I think rather frustratingly, they reserve the right to confiscate anything they perceive as dangerous. I like the idea of putting it in a pencil case, because if they don't see it, they can't take it can they?

PurplePidjin · 12/06/2012 15:34

What about a seam ripper, as scissors are obviously out?

SoupDragon · 12/06/2012 15:38

I was going to take nail clippers rather than scissors.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/06/2012 15:44

Any sharp metal object is going to make them twitchy, although I believe there is supposed to be an acceptable length..It is so subjective though that is a problem. Scissors are def out. I can't imagine they'd like a seam ripper because you aren't allowed a knife with a blade of any length, and it might be perceived as one.

PurplePidjin · 12/06/2012 16:24

Teeth it is then Wink

SoupDragon · 12/06/2012 16:27

"scissors (less than 6cm with rounded ends are allowed in hand baggage)"

From the Gatwick website

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/06/2012 16:30

What we need, what we really need is poem about this from Rosie...

Sneaking crochet hooks through security and onto planes by Rosie.

That would make my day.

I meant to ask about knitting needles before we flew last week and then realised it wouldn't make any difference whether they were allowed or not as we were travelling with three young dc Wink

RedRosie · 12/06/2012 17:06

Pitsey!

A Poem About Difficulty

Crafting on a plane
Is an awful strain

And for all our sins
We're not allowed our pins

What's a girl to do?
Its making Pitsey blue ...

Let's take them in disguise
Can anyone advise?

:o

There could be more ...

Molehillmountain · 12/06/2012 17:13

LackaDAISYcal · 12/06/2012 17:16

I've got some plastic hooks that came free with knitting magazines, they would be ok surely?

Trib, those crochet letters that you linked...can any experienced hookers explain the symbols? The oval is chain stitch, but what is the shaded in oval? and the asterisk?

I have been trying to experiment with a few, but they look nothing like the photos so I'm obv doing something wrong Confused

LackaDAISYcal · 12/06/2012 17:21

To hide them in one's brolly
may be seen as utter folly

Or maybe in a pencil case
to help one keep a straighter face...

Erm....runs out of inspiration

RedRosie · 12/06/2012 17:39

Daisy has a plan
(She really is fantastic)
I'm now her biggest fan
Hooks composed of plastic!

tribpot · 12/06/2012 17:48

DAISY, I have Googled and this is the best I can come up with. Still no explanation on the asterisk. I've asked FormerlyTitledUntidy to pop over ...

Shaded ovals are slip stitches :) also seen as dots. Not seen the asterix before, though seems to indicate a magic loop perhaps? Download the CYCA crochet symbols chart for a really clear chart on symbols.

prettybird · 12/06/2012 18:39

Have now learnt out how to do "right angles" while knitting here. This square will have to go into MrsY or Greengoose's blankets though 'cos I had to use purple and pink, 'cos I'd run out of Matilda's colours.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/06/2012 18:46

Rosie - loving your work!!

tribpot · 12/06/2012 18:49

Very cute, bird! And excellent anchor before, you are doing well!
