Support thread - new blankets

I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

More to follow ...

If its any help 100years I have a book with a whole section of plain and purl combinations. You just have to be able to count. Which this evening I seem unable to again...Sad

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/05/2012 22:47

Evening Woolly chums

Pleiades - I know what you mean about crochet - I was so bloomin determined, and was honestly so thrilled when I actually managed a Granny. I was right chuffed Grin I'm doing one now, my first square is going to be for MrsY, a green granny with purple border and then something in the middle. I did try making the 'cutest bird ever TM' but mine looked like it had flown into the window so I'm going to have to try again, or maybe try something else!

100years - not imperfections my lovely - call it character. Your square has character!

I need to crack purl. I really do. I tried with Youtube and it was a dis-arse-ter, so who lives near me that can come over for a coffee and teach me??

Actually I know where lots of you live!!! I shall be turning up on someone's doorstep with my knitting needles

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/05/2012 22:48

Sadly Moley, you are not near me, or I could count and you could purl.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/05/2012 23:07

All PMs replied to, thank you everyone you are marvellous Thanks

MrsY · 15/05/2012 23:15

I just wanted to drop by and thank you all for your kind thoughts and this amazing, amazing thing you are doing. I'm really humbled that you give up your time and money to help someone that you've never met. I knit and I never knew about this group Blush.

Thank you all for your kind words on Benedict's thread, as well. The more people who know about Benedict, the more I feel he is validated as a person. It means a lot to us.

Pistey, I'm meeting up with MOS to confuse help her with her knitting next Wednesday if you're get-able to Bluewater, you'd be more than welcome to join us.

tribpot · 15/05/2012 23:18

MrsY - no thanks necessary, except to the marvellous Pistey and Knotty who boss us about and ensure good order (or at least good wine) is kept flowing.

Love and thoughts to your family, and to Greengoose's family too.

Aw, MrsY. Thanks for taking the time to pop in. We really appreciate it.

The most wonderful thing about the blankets is that they are driven by the sheer force of humanity. It always has been. People can be quite remarkable.

Benedict will live long in many people's hearts and memories, I hope you may take some comfort in that.

Sending you much love x

prettybird · 15/05/2012 23:25

If you haven't learnt by July I'll giving teaching you purl a go! a bit late for these blankets though

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/05/2012 06:49

Arse! Blooming work gets in the way again, MrsY thank you, i really would have loved to come on Wednesday, and had a knitting lesson with MOS Smile but work gets in the way. But thank you for the offer!! Thanks

Lovely to see you on here too, sending you love and a big hug and thinking of Benedict. X

If I haven't learnt by July, Pretty looks like I'm all yours Grin You lucky thing.

KnottyLocks · 16/05/2012 07:09

Morning Smile

Work for me too. I'll pop in when I can.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/05/2012 07:16

My PMs are working - lovely trib sent me a test one. Thanks

PurplePidjin · 16/05/2012 07:26

Pistey, I can purl, which is bizarre as my overall knitting is shite!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/05/2012 07:42

Pidj - it might come to you then - gird yourself Grin

PurplePidjin · 16/05/2012 07:51

Morning ...

CatsCatsCats!

I love Cats!

The thread is now weirded out because it's got big. I can't reply on my phone any more Confused and it's difficult at work.

I'll be watching though ...

tribpot · 16/05/2012 08:57

I might start a new one, Rosie, as many MNers are using their phones.

Pistey, you do granny squares with different colours? What do you do with all the pesky ends? I'm jealous in awe. I am definitely going to hunt down more crochet square patterns and see what I can achieve.

I think there's another side to these blankets. We are all aware how we are trying to contribute to the big community hug for those who have lost someone special. But at the same time some of us are pushing the barriers with our skills. The effort that goes into each square is a reflection of the love we send, as is the donation of wool without which some of us would be unable to contribute. I'm in awe at the whole project and the people who find time to donate in one way or another to these blankets.

PurplePidjin · 16/05/2012 09:59

Pleiades, you lay both pesky ends on the top of your work and crochet over them. Voila, no sewing :o

The number of former recipients now donating has shocked me, btw. Such kindness at a time when you'd expect a bit of... Not selfishness, just that you wouldn't expect a bereaved person to be thinking of others, it would be totally justifiable to be wrapped up in one's own affairs. I think I've phrased this really badly so I'll have it deleted if I offend anyone

tribpot · 16/05/2012 10:36

No Pidj, I think you've expressed it very well. I don't know how former recipients can manage to get up in the morning, never mind think of others going through a similar, dreadful thing. It is a community endeavour in the very best sense of the word but we never forget the reason behind it.

Thanks
prettybird · 16/05/2012 12:27

Completed my bird pattern. Maybe I should have attempted intarsia technique for the first time with a pattern that didn't use five colours! Grin

Still, it looks like it's turned out OK - now got lots of pesky ends to sew in. Hmm

tribpot · 16/05/2012 12:35

five colours, bird? Shock Which pattern were you doing?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/05/2012 13:37

I think Knotty sums it up so well by saying people are remarkable, they are inspiring too, such kindness and compassion. Tis the power of humanity, the strength of individuals and of our community coming together. It is wonderful.

Pleiades - yes I do, and I find it easier to, because when I get all the way round and slip stitch, I am still not completely sure what I do next. Do you chain up and then where do you go? So, between you and me, I find it easier at the mo to start again Blush Can't seem to work that bit out!

Sew in those bloody ends Pretty, don't 'forget' or I'll end up having to do it for you Confused

Trib - is there a new thread yet?

Right, I'm off to my PM pile Thanks

Pastabee · 16/05/2012 14:33

Wow, tribot your patterns are fab. You've inspired me to try intarsia for my next square. That's in addition to the Chinese Waves I've nearly finished thanks to you.

Thanks
