Support thread - new blankets

I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

More to follow ...

I want to help with these blankets because it's a practical expression of the words I find I have always found it hard to come up with in real life. I'm an empathy by action lady, generally with food. I do feel very reflective as I knit-more than I thought I would and I very genuinely think of Benedict and Merryn and their loving families. In fact I have to rein my perfectionism because I need the balance between it feeling important that it's my best work, and not missing the point that it's about the hug Smile

Pasta - I can make absolutely no guarantees where intarsia is concerned, but I very much enjoyed doing my two-colour squares (fairisle stylee) for the last blanket. Will hopefully have a bash at one of my cat squares although I also need to do a peanut at some point.

Pistey - haven't started a new thread as I thought it would be amusing that we could talk about RedRosie where she could see but not reply Grin - is that bad?

I think I meant FairIlse Blush. Carrying the colours with you rather than bundling them on bobbins. Relearning all this as haven't really knitted since my Nanna taught me when I was a child!

TwoJackRussellsandababy · 16/05/2012 14:51

Just reporting in, have done two squares and am starting on my third, none of them are super fancy but am following the plain is good, plain is essential line :o

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/05/2012 14:52

No, that is very funny, yes, let's talk about Rosie

tribpot · 16/05/2012 15:14

JackRussell - all good, keep it up!

Pasta - yes, fairisle = good! Still a few knacks to re-learn, I'll see if I can find the website I used last time. My last effort (the back of it!) - not sure if this was good or not!

Thanks trib for the waves pattern link, that's something I could definitely attempt. :) I might do it, but I might return to my favoured crochet and practice(practise?) the waves on non posh nice yarn.

Thanks pistey, it definitely has character :)

prettybird · 16/05/2012 15:42

tribpot it was from my big fat knitting book that my dad gave me for my birthday (The Knitting Book)

I've put a picture up onto my profile.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/05/2012 15:44

Is anyone actually going to talk about Rosie ?

I love Rosie because she calls me Pitsey.. Grin

DontCallMeBaby · 16/05/2012 15:59

Molehill that is VERY well put. And I find knitting quite reflective too - I struggle to do one thing at a time, end up watching television and doing three different things online. Knitting makes me concentrate properly!

Pastabee · 16/05/2012 16:10

Looks superb to me!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/05/2012 17:42

Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

Just a reminder that the last posting date for the squares for the Blanket for Greengoose and MrsY is Saturday 2nd June

Question for the (fabulous! Smile) "hookers" Wink who make up the blankets:

I'm trying a "feather and fan" stitch for my latest square (uses increases and decreases to make a wavy pattern). It means that the bottom edge (and presumably the top edge when I get to it) is a wee bit wavy; will you hookers be able to cope with that?

KnottyLocks · 16/05/2012 19:26

Oh yes, PrettyBird Smile

tribpot · 16/05/2012 19:26

bird, I dunno if the hookers are up for feather and fan - this bonnet has it as an edging stitch and it's pretty wavy. I think if they had to pull it straight to line it up with other squares you could end up losing some of the lovely nature of the pattern?

prettybird · 16/05/2012 19:52

After Knotty's response, I continued knitting and have now done about 2 inches. You're right tribpot - you do lose some of the attractive feather and fan effect when you stretch the bottom edge straight - but it still looks quite nice and

prettybird · 16/05/2012 19:53

....there is still some of the wave effect left. Hopefully the middle section will show it more.

PurplePidjin · 16/05/2012 20:21

Knots, that feather and fan edging... Are you thinking what I'm thinking???

PurpleKittyKnitting · 16/05/2012 20:27

Now about half way through a heart square and needed an idea for my last one. Definitely going to do a cat one. I will do one for me too as I have some dishcloth wool left over from a bath mat I made recently.

PurpleKittyKnitting · 16/05/2012 20:28

Sorry, also meant to say many thanks to trib. I am going to save those patterns to use again.

prettybird · 16/05/2012 20:40

I'll continue for the moment - and post it up on fb for Knotty to have a look at. if the worst comes to the worst, I can try and graft on some knitting I'd crochet if I knew how into the "waves" to straighten them off.

tribpot · 16/05/2012 20:42

No probs at all, PurpleKitty. I've just updated the cat-and-mouse one, although this will only work for contrasting colours rather than stitches, I suspect, as the mice are quite close to the border. Can always reduce the border down by a stitch .. anyway, will add that into the set as Cat 5.

bird, love your square and also your fab ones from the last blanket. V jealous!

Pretty, run a line of dc into the edge, with htc's in the dips :)

Or, patients it and pick it and mark it with Pidj and Pistey will send it flying down to me

prettybird · 16/05/2012 21:13

Can you translate for me please: dc and htc?

PurpleKittyKnitting · 16/05/2012 21:27

dc would be double crochet and I think htc is half treble
