I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

Thanks knotty Smile

On to the next one then Grin

Am now attempting a bird design using Intarsia technique for the various colours - but am finding that I am reverting to my familiar Iceland/Fairisle techique of just lopping the wool across.

I blame my new big fat knitting book for getting over adventurous trying out new things. Grin

tribpot · 15/05/2012 17:16

bird, I think after Minnie's intarsia experiment, Fairisle is our friend here!

got my yarn today and am very keen to get started :)

PurpleKittyKnitting · 15/05/2012 18:19

Only done about a quarter of a bear one so far. Made some sort of mess up and ripped out 2 rows. Hope to finish it tonight. Think I will have enough for 2 more.

Molehillmountain · 15/05/2012 18:39

Three squares done. Need to lie down in darkened room after playdate here today, but then think I've earnt some more knitting time Smile

GlaikitFizzog · 15/05/2012 19:30

Still no woolly wool for me, so I'll just shake my pompoms to cheer everyone else on!

I've been practising the star pattern with not much success

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/05/2012 19:33

It will come tomorrow GlaikitFizzog!

tribpot · 15/05/2012 19:58

Well I'm attempting a knitted square, just had to reacquaint myself with casting on. I don't think I've knit since last April! And that was something that I'd cast on probably December 2010!!! Still it seems to be going quite well now :)

GlaikitFizzog · 15/05/2012 20:43

No it's not Trib, their reputation remains intact! :o

tribpot · 15/05/2012 20:50

Oh thank goodness Glaikit I was worried I was going to have to Have Words.

100years, keep going!

RedRosie - no money to be made in charting other people's patterns, I fear! Hope you had a good trip to England's Riviera!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/05/2012 20:58

Yayy for train knitting Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/05/2012 20:59

I knitted some squares for previous blankets, but the photos of the crochet squares amazed me. To the point where I bought hooks and a book to revive my childhood crochet skills. After several months I can do simple things which go in straight lines but going around to make a square daunted me. I bit the bullet this afternoon and I am now the proud maker of 2 granny squares for the current blanket projects. I can feel an addiction starting..... Smile

Pleiades, you can start your monthly subscription to 'all the yarn Rowan have' (or Debbie Bliss, we are a broad church) right now Wink

For DroitwichMummy

100years · 15/05/2012 21:21

There may be a slight imperfection I my knitted square. I haven't dropped a stitch, but I've knit one a weird way and on the one side there is an obvious bit where the line looks a bit weird, but there is no hole. But it looks fine on the other side. Not a clue what's happened. Confused but I'm at 2" with about 22 rows at the moment. I'm only knitting. If I decide to do another knitted one then I'll go all brave and do a combination, but for now, it's knitting only.

tribpot · 15/05/2012 21:23

Plain squares are good, plain squares are essential.

OP posts:
100years · 15/05/2012 21:33

It would still be plain, it would either be a knit row, purl row, or knit a few, purl a few to make stripes. My knitting skills are not up to much more than that yet! And I do prefer crochet, I just thought it would make a nice change to knit.

tribpot · 15/05/2012 21:42

Nearly all of knitting is just knit a few purl a few Grin but if you feel like pushing the boat out you could try Chinese waves (literally you just slip some stitches, which is the same as knitting them but you just put the needle in as if to knit and then move it to the other needle without actually putting the yarn round and pulling a new stitch through). Or diagonal rib?

droitwichmummy · 15/05/2012 22:18

purple that looks a bit ambitious! My London Midland sponsored square is a simple double stocking stitch (simple is good etc etc) I can't manage anything more complicated than that on the move...
