Support thread - new blankets

I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

More to follow ...

Just browsed my other stitch library and managed to choose from "440 more knitting stitches" volume three Confused. It's a nice zigzag in knits and purls. Now I just need my counting head on!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/05/2012 14:50

Anyone else fffrrrizzzzzin today?

Molehillmountain · 14/05/2012 14:54

Yes! But I am warming up after closing the windows I'd forgotten I'd opened Blush

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/05/2012 15:07

Just can't get warm today.

GlaikitFizzog · 14/05/2012 15:19

I have my slanket on and fleecey socks! Still cold! Got my planting done though! In a force 5 gale mind! big Brew for me!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/05/2012 15:36

Warm and wet here, have been wearing sandals out and about (platforms to keep me out of puddles). Hoping my wool will arrive home with DH today (got it sent to him at work).

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/05/2012 15:41

I'm having a Brew too and have put on two jumpers. Looking like the michelin man, but hey ho.

MinnieBar · 14/05/2012 16:13

Right, I finally picked up my needles today... thought I'd fit in an hour of relaxing knitting while DD1 watched 'A Very Mickey Christmas' Hmm

I also thought I'd try intarsia, as I like to try and push the envelope where my knitting techniques are involved Wink

Could not make head nor tail of what my book was telling me to do, and I ended up with all my threads on the right side. So I fudged it, no made it up thought very hard and it looks... ropey. Literally in places, like, well, two bits of knitting squished together.

Hmmm. I'm hoping if I sort of sew them together at the end there won't be any gaps, but I suspect I will be frogging it.

Molehillmountain · 14/05/2012 16:26

Sun's come out here Smile

Molehillmountain · 14/05/2012 16:28

Ds has lost the coffee holding bit of my coffee pot. I don't think he realises how serious this is. It's half past four which is informally known as "quick brew up before it all goes pear shaped" time. Roll on knitting o'clock Wink

prettybird · 14/05/2012 16:47

Have now been to JL and got 4 balls of wool if dh finds out how much it costs I'll be needing to ask for donated wool in future Wink

Was going to try to a square with swirl increases but kept getting the 4/5 needles muddled up. So I'm now doing a bobble stitch square and regretting it as it's both time and wool consuming.

But it is serving the purpose of teaching me new techniques Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/05/2012 16:57

I've put one of DD's hoodies on now as well. No sun here Mole.

I want fleecy socks like GlaikitFizzog Smile

I am going to do some more crochet later. Hopefully.

Molehillmountain · 14/05/2012 17:28

Sad Pistey. If its any consolation I am inside as mine don't want to be out! I'm guessing it will be too cold for drinks on the patio by the time they're in bed. Not to cold to knit though. Bit preoccupied with squares else I'd run you up some fingerless gloves for crocheting in the cold in Wink

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/05/2012 17:35

Plain squares are definitely good Minnie Smile

And bless you lovely Mole, the heating is on now and I am thawing out.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/05/2012 18:11

Wool has arrived, sun has come out and I am looking forward to an evening of crochet and wine.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/05/2012 18:28

Sun?

tribpot · 14/05/2012 19:53

Well it was nice and warm in my office today, so I missed out on the mini Ice Age you all seemed to have going on.

Minnie, I think a willingness to experiment is courageous and to be encouraged. Well done!

upsydaisy, I think our PTA might have a craft group too. I got a rather intimidating letter through with virtually no details on it, just instructions to phone someone I've never heard of. Confused Getting to Ilkely from here would mean one train into town and another out, whereas I can drive over in about half an hour, but no chance of me having the energy after work.

Thanks for all the ginger beers, people, I think I should campaign for a new emoticon given I drink neither Wine nor Brew.

Do you eat Biscuit trib? Happy to provide those!

PurpleKittyKnitting · 14/05/2012 20:54

Finished the sheep trib! Thanks very much. I like how the written instructions are alternating colours for odd and even rows, and the border in black.

At one point I thought I had gone wrong but then I checked the chart and I could actually see it I realised I hadn't.

RedRosie · 14/05/2012 21:01

Nearly home (puffs). Trib knows all about my trials and tribulations (see what I did there?) today. Only 2 and a half hours late for the 4 hour meeting.

No time for woolly squares tonight ... And another 4 hours (fingers crossed it doesn't go as wrong as it did today) of train travel tomorrow.

... Finishing my double moss stitch square is top of the agenda for Wednesday evening. Then on to the lovely sheepy sheep pattern Trib has kindly re-sized for the challenged-of-crafty-skills such as me.

She's a star Thanks

RedRosie · 14/05/2012 21:03

Purple. S'not fair! You've done the sheep first and I bet its really good!

PurpleKittyKnitting · 14/05/2012 21:12

Sounds like you have had a very busy day RedRosie! I squeezed 20 mins in before work and did more on breaks.

Think I will work on my own blanket a bit now!

tribpot · 14/05/2012 21:16

Rosie - yes, tribulations. Boom boom!

Glad you made it finally - a colleague who was on that same train line came in announcing he'd been re-routed via York (like it was Outer Mongolia, I might add, he has a flair for the dramatic). However, plenty of time on your train journey for sheepy knitting :)

Btw, said dramatic colleague is convinced that St Dymphna is the patron saint of knitting, despite all Wiki evidence to the contrary. So he is insisting we celebrate her day tomorrow, might take my square in and do some knitting in the truly tedious bits of phone conferences - this is what headsets were designed for, so your hands could get on with more important things (typically IMing other people on the call to say 'WTF is that guy going on about?')

Purple, glad you liked my colour-coded instructions! It helped me to remember which side I was on so I could translate 'grey stitch, yellow stitch' correctly from the chart.

Mole - more cakes than biscuits. I've been doing work with a team based in one of our other offices recently and I've been sending them pictures of all the cakes we've been eating (my excuse is that my co-worker is finally enjoying her pregnancy after an absolutely shocking first trimester and so is eating for England to make up) and they've been getting increasingly cross. Today I sent them a shot of me pretending to read 'PharmaTimes' (they are pharmacists so they like that stuff) but they were even cross about that. Mini Jaffa cakes tomorrow methinks!

RedRosie · 14/05/2012 21:25

Oh yes. I am a very busy and important person me. Oh yes. Had I been re-routed via York I would have stayed there. We, on the other hand, just sat (just) outside Stevenage FOR TWO HOURS AND FOUR MINUTES.

Sorry. Been a long day.

The plus side of "Swotty" Purple doing the sheepy square firsy is that Trib's instructions are obviously perfect.

RedRosie · 14/05/2012 21:28

firsy? First, obviously.

Night all.
