Support thread - new blankets

I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

More to follow ...

prettybird I'm the Edinburgh side of West Lothian but really don't know anywhere past Livingston so will defer to you on location! I can do Mondays or Fridays (pesky work gets in the way the rest of the week) or weekends. I too may brave the train into Edinburgh with DS tomorrow as I found some gift vouchers for there the other day in the back of a drawer. Maybe we should start another thread to see if anyone else is interested?

Trib - It was a good job my mum was with me and whispered in my ear "do you need that 400g ball of aran wool? what will you make with it? How is your blanket going for DS?" Spoil sport!! BUT she has gone home now Mwah ha ha ha

LackaDAISYcal · 13/05/2012 22:08

Hello :)

Just signed up, ordered some Debbie Bliss and can't wait to get started.

droitwichmummy · 13/05/2012 22:13

Just finished second square. I reckon on getting another one out of this ball of wool. Am ready for more if anyone wants to send some more in my direction

KnottyLocks · 13/05/2012 22:20

Droitwich, if you weigh your square then the leftover wool, it should give you an idea if you've got another square's worth.

Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 22:37

Square two done Smile. Bedtime.

RedRosie · 14/05/2012 06:02

Morning all. it is too early to be on the way to King's Cross

Thanks Trib. Will look forward to my orders ... Will look at the chart as well as the instructions as I've never worked from a chart.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/05/2012 06:22

Morning everyone Brew
Rosie, it is!

tribpot · 14/05/2012 07:27

Okay Purple - Rosie's been PMed so she can amuse herself on her long train journey by reading the instructions. The link to the chart is here (worth looking again as I added two rows yesterday) and here are the written instructions.

Caveat - as far as I can tell, the written pattern matches the chart but the chart is infinitely easier to create as it's just a question of making a picture that looks like a sheep. If in doubt, follow your instincts and compare the row with the chart instructions. If I get a chance this week I will try and knit up just the sheepy bit in the middle to make sure it's right.

Morning, lovely blanketeers Smile

upsydaisysexstylist · 14/05/2012 08:51

waves, at tribpot urges her to visit create in Ilkley to gaze at full range of wool needed for blanket. However, I would not wish to be responsible for your overdraft thus incurred. I have only ever made it to their knit and natter twice due to small children but they have free wine! free wine I tell you.

KnottyLocks · 14/05/2012 08:58

Free wine? Smashing Grin

DontCallMeBaby · 14/05/2012 09:07

Morning all. I am off work with a cold - on the positive side this means a day of tea, knitting, mumsnet and Radio 4. Lovely. So I will be commencing square #3 whether it is needed or not. I'd quite like to do my own blanket one day, but my sewing is terrible. eyes ruefully beautiful merino cushion cover complete with utterly cackhanded sewing

KnottyLocks · 14/05/2012 09:57

Baby, can you crochet ? The blankets we do aren't sewn together, we crochet them using a double crochet seam. Might be a better option for you.

tribpot · 14/05/2012 10:23

upsydaisy, I didn't realise Ilkley boasted such a fine craft shop. Not far from me but a bit of a pain to park in? Free wine not a temptation for me I'm afraid :)

It is for me Grin

DontCallMeBaby · 14/05/2012 10:27

I tried to teach myself to crochet. It made me go like this - Confused

But I know crochet queen DillyTante IRL so if I ever have sufficient squares for a blanket I will kidnap her and make her teach me properly.

tribpot · 14/05/2012 10:28

Knotty, perhaps I should have clarified - I'm in recovery. Nearly at a year sober. I shall celebrate with ... er, ginger beer.

KnottyLocks · 14/05/2012 10:32

Ah, gotcha. Smile Ginger beers all round then. Nearly a year is a fantastic. Well done, my lovely. Something to be very proud of and to celebrate. x

KnottyLocks · 14/05/2012 10:34

Baby, Dilly is indeed the one to advise you, especially if you can pin her down in RL. She's smashing Smile

PurplePidjin · 14/05/2012 10:41
Molehillmountain · 14/05/2012 11:00

Well done trib-that's amazing Smile

upsydaisysexstylist · 14/05/2012 11:01

ginger beer indeed! I have had coffee on my visits as littlest one always responds to me going out by feeding voraciously on my return. the group is on a thursday evening so parking is free. Mind you train is probably easier from leeds. I love the shop but am usually found in Boyes as Stylecraft make their value dk and it is actually their stylecraft special ( same names smaller range of colours) .

Ilkley is suprisingly good for crafting and ds1's soon to be primary ( september gulp) has PTA craft grp. They also have a camping weekend which is either lovely or a terrible idea.

GlaikitFizzog · 14/05/2012 11:18

Well done Trib, Brew and Biscuit all round then! I sickened myself of ginger beer when pregnant and trying ot get rid of my morning sickness

Still no woolly wool Sad. But I have trays of bedding plants to get in, so off to get my hands dirty!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/05/2012 12:05

Ilkley sounds lovely (only been there once, years ago, it was pouring so we took refuge in Betty's for the afternoon and didn't see much else). Nothing much like that round here. Though I noticed a sign up for knit and natter sessions in our local Hobbycraft the other day. Trib - well done on your nearly year, that is no small achievement.

PurpleKittyKnitting · 14/05/2012 14:31

Thanks for the written instructions. On a break at work so will do a better post when I am home
