Support thread - new blankets

I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

More to follow ...

Have I been given magic wool? Just weighed my first two squares and they come to 25g! So if I did the same again I might squeeze four out of one ball!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/05/2012 21:52

Yes tis magic wool Wink

droitwichmummy · 14/05/2012 22:27

I was bold today and did some knitting on the train home from work. About half way through 3rd square and now DS wants one to remember one of our cats who passed away in December.

tribpot · 14/05/2012 22:31

droitwich, this is a a super cute cat pattern either for two colours or purl on a knit background (a la sheep) or vice versa. Happy to stick that into a pattern of some kind for you if you would like.

I often knit a teddy blanket, each teddy is 32 stitches wide and 40 rows. I will add the 3 row and stitch border to it. Never copied and pasted on my phone but will try. It is on ravelry!

PurpleKittyKnitting · 14/05/2012 23:00

No, not sure how/if I can do it! I think if you just search for teddy blanket you should get it. I have 2 in my projects!

prettybird · 14/05/2012 23:04

Knotty - this bobble stitch square I am doing has ended up being a generous 6.5 inches wide. It's almost impossible to unravel so will you be able to cope? I can make it slightly shorter (done c2.5 inches so far) so that the "stretch" should bring in the width a bit Blush

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/05/2012 23:06

Good night Woollies X

tribpot · 14/05/2012 23:08

Is it this one, Purple?

OP posts:
tribpot · 14/05/2012 23:09

Or this one?

PrettyBird, I can manage that. Don't make it too short though. Better off aiming for 6" and I'll manage the difference.

DontForgetTheLightAlesLawrence · 15/05/2012 00:42

Hello knitters! I'd like to donate wool to both blankets, can someone PM me with the details please?
Thanky.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/05/2012 05:44

Morning Brew

Just heading to my PM box now Lawrence. Many thanks Thanks

droitwichmummy · 15/05/2012 09:00

Trib cat pattern would be wonderful - thank you. Any knitting pattern would be fine

Pastabee · 15/05/2012 09:01

Ummm, when knitting a lovely Chinese square and it's all going really well don't decide to try out continental hold midway through. It changes the tension horribly.

Furthermore it's best to notice ASAP so you don't have to unravel 11 rows and hurt your brain calculating where that puts you in the pattern.

Not that this happened to me last night. Oh no. I would never be that foolish.

KnottyLocks · 15/05/2012 09:15

Morning, all Smile

Pistey apologise if any of you were waiting for a PM but MN wasn't back online before she headed off for work.

School and preschool run done, kitchen tidy, washing - least said the better Wink. Dd2 asleep, radio on, completely tangled wool unravelled and....knit Smile.

PurplePidjin · 15/05/2012 10:46

For those on long train journeys, it's the perfect time ime to knit/crochet - you're stuffed for anything else to do, and reading makes me travel sick Blush

Please please please can someone have a meetup with me and help me make a teddy blanket like in Trib's 2nd link? So cute and I have a reason to need one...

Molehillmountain · 15/05/2012 11:21

The pink one would be a case of learning to knit and purl and then you'd be away - the rest is counting stitches Smile. Not practical for me to do meet ups at the moment or I'd help you. The other one is beyond my skill set!

PurplePidjin · 15/05/2012 11:35

Thanks Mole, Blondes's blanket had knit/purl teds on and they're lovely. I need to decide what wool I want too, might risk my local wool shop - I normally don't dare enter for fear of bankruptcy!

tribpot · 15/05/2012 11:46

Pidj - meeting is a bit tricky for me, but happy to Skype? You could make your life easier by not trying to knit it with the yarn held double and you don't have to do it in one piece, you can always sew it together at the end. That way you're only making teddy squares one at a time ...

You could also then make it a bit easier to do by interspersing the teddy squares with plain stockinette ones, in fact then you could maybe do it in strips of 4 so less sewing up?

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 15/05/2012 12:01

I'm actually wondering about using the chart to crochet squares (could do that myself, it's knitting I struggle with)

Either in htc's with the teddy done as fptc or bptc (cable effect), the lace effect thing the name of which I've forgotten, or colour changing. Unfortunately, I don't know what colours yet and if I wait to find out I'll never finish it in time :o

tribpot · 15/05/2012 12:18

Yes, why not have a whack at doing it in crochet? In terms of colours, you could go for cream and green, maybe? Or I've just taken a commission for a heart blanket based on the Team Heart in grey for a baby due in September.

Molehillmountain · 15/05/2012 12:21

I did a blanket for each of my dc in cream. Am now thinking that that might give then potential to be used for grandchildren in the dim and distant daydream future Smile
