Support thread - new blankets

I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

Morning all.

My first square (from the lovely donor wool - thank you again lovely donor) will be in double moss stitch. Ambitious eh?

Simple squares are GOOD. Simple squares are ESSENTIAL.

This is for the best, as I can only do simple.

For the second square, does someone have an easy design I can do - like the heart one (without borders - on profile) I managed for Mrs K's blanket? It has to be simple, knit and purl only, with no clever bits and not need re-sizing ...

tribpot · 13/05/2012 11:03

Red, if you let me know how many stitches make 6" for you I can resize one of the other patterns for you quite easily. But how about hearts big and small or this sheep one is very cute.

Mole - love the Norwegian fir stitch! Is that in the Knitter's Bible? Just goes to show, it's always worth looking at a Norwegian.

That's the one trib! I haven't used the stitch library up til now but the blankets are making me feel less Blush about not just owning that book but another entire book of knitting stitches!!
Double moss stitch is lovely Smile

tribpot · 13/05/2012 11:36

Mole - I have both that one and this one in my basket on Amazon. I haven't pushed the button yet .. but how much longer can it really be resisted ...

Does anyone know of a really really simple crochet bird pattern that only uses chain, double and treble? Im thinking something to make to attach. I'm also thinking trying to run before I can walk, but worth a try Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/05/2012 11:53

What am I like? There is the Knotty one. I wonder how hard that is?

Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 11:59

Well, trib, given that there are only two left in stock and you've linked it on here, I'd see it as a matter of great urgency! Buy it! The knitters bible is great-not a book of great beauty but solid content. I however am barred from amazon at present...
Pistey-would help but I don't speak crochet! Really want to learn one day.

Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 12:02

Border wise, how many rows of garter stitch would match a four stitch border at each side? Or do I just knit it and start again if it's not right? How many times can I knit the same wool? Confused

KnottyLocks · 13/05/2012 12:09

Pistey, the Twitter bird pattern is linked near the start of this thread as 'cutest bird pattern' . It's in US terms not UK so you'll need to translate. The only stitch you haven't done that you need is the double triple/ treble. It's like the usual tr but you wrap the wool around twice before going into the stitch then work the same way as a triple, in pairs.

RedRosie · 13/05/2012 12:33

Hi Trib. You are so helpful!

With this wool, I get a six inch square casting 34 stitches on 4mm needles ...

The sheep is cute ... But I would need it resized? Instructions for me have to be very clear and simple so that I can tick them off line by line ...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/05/2012 13:26

Pistey - here is a bird crochet pattern that I found on Pinterest. It is American though. I might try it myself later.

crochet bird

tribpot · 13/05/2012 13:38

Rosie - no worries. Yes, the sheep is 45 stitches so you can either move down a couple of needle sizes or I'll just chop out the extra stitches later this avo. Is a chart like the hummingbird okay or is it better if I just write it out?

WhoKnows, that's the 'Twitter' bird I've used for the Kwazii blanket. It's easy and cute and uses very little wool. Just convert to UK terminology.

RedRosie · 13/05/2012 14:02

Could you write it out Trib? Then I can either copy and paste it into my phone or print it out and carry it about with me.

You are a star Thanks

PurpleKittyKnitting · 13/05/2012 14:07

Oooo just settled down to do my next one and I will so that sheep one!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/05/2012 14:11

Must have missed that link Knotty. I've just made one, minus beak and eye it took about 10 mins, it is very cute.

KnottyLocks · 13/05/2012 14:18

I didn't bother changing wool for the beak, just kept going.

PurpleKittyKnitting · 13/05/2012 14:20

Should I use the 3.25 mm needles it suggest in the pattern or just stick to 4mm?

PurpleKittyKnitting · 13/05/2012 14:29

I have used 4mm and after the first row it is 6 inches so I will carry on!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/05/2012 14:37

Bird help needed!

I have done round 1
In Round 2 where it says 5trc is that the one where I put the wool round twice?

"Round 2: Ch 1 (counts as first sc). Into same stitch, work [dc, 5 trc dc, sc]. (Bird head). Sc in each of next 10 sc (around bird belly). Into next stitch, work [sc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, sc] (bird tail). Sc in each of next 3 sc (bird back)."

I'm not sure this going to end well....

prettybird · 13/05/2012 14:41

tribpot - I'm in Glasgow so I'm just being lazy and not found the time to go into John Lewis. I'll try and go in tomorrow. I know it's more expensive but I like to see the colours "in the flesh" as it were.

droitwichmummy · 13/05/2012 14:48

Note to self - don't try to knit after Wine Those last 4 rows from last night look a bit Confused!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/05/2012 14:59

Pistey yes, think it's called a double treble in English. Wool round twice, hook under chain, pull through, then wool round, through two loops, and again and again.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/05/2012 15:00

talk about the blind leading the blind......

KnottyLocks · 13/05/2012 15:02

Pistey, round twice but only before you go into the next stitch. After it works the same way as a tr: round pull through 2 loops on the hook; round pull through 2; round pull through 2
