Support thread - new blankets

I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

More to follow ...

Ooo might do that tomorrow tribpot! Nearly finished the owl one. Want to do some work on my tunic tonight as it has been neglected the last few nights!

KnottyLocks · 12/05/2012 21:56

The owl is very cute indeed. There's one on the current blankets I'm working on.

prettybird · 12/05/2012 22:15

Still haven't got started as haven't had a chance to go into John Lewis to get wool Sad

tribpot · 12/05/2012 22:27

bird - you're up in the wilds of West Lothian or thereabouts aren't you? There are a couple of other places nearer to you, if so. Or of course the magic of t'internet. I'm in Leeds and even here there are no yarn shops that stock either brand we are to use.

Started second square in a stitch called lace mesh. Done four rows-it is quite holey. Is that okay? Haven't passed the point of no return...

tribpot · 12/05/2012 23:37

Is it this one, Molehill? If so I think it might be a bit stretchy, like the Turkish one I linked to above - but will defer to Knotty on that one! Might be worth doing it inside a garter stitch border to reduce the stretchiness at the edges?

Finished my second square, did this Chinese waves pattern,

www.maggiesrags.com/dishcloth.pdf

It was nice and easy to do, but seemed to take ages!

Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 07:55

It looks like that one, trib-it has a psso where you pass it over two knitted stitches but end result looks the same-mostly holes! I will leave it on the needles until I get to knit again today but I'm thinking there are probably better stitches to do! If we were making string vests though....

KnottyLocks · 13/05/2012 08:31

morning, lovelies Smile

Mole, I think it could be a bit gappy. It can make the squares quite floppy [technical terms] which is a bit of a cow to hook together as you need to hook it next to tightly knitted or crocheted squares to give it some body - not always very successful. You're better off going for a denser knit. Hope that's ok Smile

Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 08:37

Lace mesh? What lace mesh? Wink consider it gone! Okay to do one with holes with plenty of knitting around them? Quite happy to avoid holes altogether! Did a square before with groups of three little holes in quite a lot of stocking stitch-might do that again. But I'm very biddable and always do as I'm told (dh throws head back and laughs heartily Grin).

ChakotayBlue · 13/05/2012 08:43

Morning Knotty and Mole. I've started a square with half a ball I had left from the last blankets. It's a beautiful pinky purple and it will be a plain one (knit a row, purl a row, what's that?) anyway, I'm repeating the mantra to myself so I don't do them all fancy.

tribpot · 13/05/2012 08:50

Mole - whilst we Do Not Speak of the lace mesh any more Wink you could maybe do it in bands with garter or stockinette around it. I did this one last time - lacy patterns tend to work best when surrounded by firmer stitches. I'm also thinking about doing this one this time - it's actually quite hard to see the pattern on multi-coloured yarn but this is basically what it looks like.

Hi blue-sticking stitch! Remember the mantra. The lovely thing about the yarn is that it doesn't need fancy stuff-it looks gorgeous with everything fancy or not Smile.

ChakotayBlue · 13/05/2012 08:54

Thanks Mole Smile

Ah, trib, bit of a sidetrack but I remember your gorgeous crofter baby clothes from last time. I think I need to do borders. Pre planning not my area of expertise, but I think I need to plan a border and think about the number of rows rather than just launch in and knit! That blue one's great, btw. Okay-just looked at a Norwegian for pattern that would give me four stitches either side for a border. As soon as dd goes to sleep I'm going to start it...

KnottyLocks · 13/05/2012 09:09

Sticking stitch? Grin

Lace effect is fine if it's fine lace. Smile Or as Trib says, has a bit of body around it. String vest effect/ fishing net to be avoided. Ta.

I love hanging round this thread because it makes me feel all crafty.... Most of the time I haven't a clue what everyone is talking about, but I love it here anyway Grin

tribpot · 13/05/2012 09:17

Mole, I didn't realise looking at a Norwegian could be so productive Wink I'm looking at a picture of one of my Norwegian friends on Facebook but it doesn't seem to work the same magic.

Crofter is still one of my faves - had I finished this ripple blanket last time? It was being examined by the recipient in our office in Exeter last week and I was cross-examined in some detail to explain how it ends up with the ripple edge :) This earlier pic gives a better sense of the colours - it's 'Seagrass'. I do have some more of the Loganberry to make another of these later in the year too.

Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 09:24

Ah...alas, no Norwegians here, just a Norwegian fir pattern and over zealous auto correct function Wink.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/05/2012 09:25

Norwegians?

Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 09:26

Blush I am skulking off with my auto correct to do some actual knitting stocking stitch or otherwise! Happy blanketing everyone!

ChakotayBlue · 13/05/2012 09:40

Morning Pistey, any news?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/05/2012 10:11

not yet, but sooooon X
