Support thread - new blankets

I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

More to follow ...

I don't know what planet I am on today, first I cast on the wrong number of stitches, start again, measure it, and it is 7.5 inches wide, so don't know where I got 6 inches with more stitches!

Will now go down to the smaller size...........!

ChakotayBlue · 13/05/2012 15:03

I wish I could crochet, it's one thing I can't do. There are some beautiful crocheted squares I've seen, is it easy to learn?

alibubbles · 13/05/2012 15:06

Needles at the ready, any donors need a knitter please?

Thank you

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/05/2012 15:10

My poor birdy looks like it has flown into someone's window.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/05/2012 15:11

I think so Chakotay, I learnt to crochet last year and now feel fairly accomplished. There are only a few basic stitches and everything is just a variation on those. I find it easier (and more forgiving of the odd mistake) than knitting. I used this website learn to knit others have used videos on Youtube. The main problem when you are starting out I think is the fact that Americans use different terminology for the same stitches, a lot of patterns on the net and books are American, so you have to take that into account.

PurpleKittyKnitting · 13/05/2012 15:20

I am now giving up on the sheep, right size needle and it is 6.5 inches wide!

RedRosie · 13/05/2012 15:46

Don't despair Purple! Trib is adapting the pattern for me, so it might help you also.

I luffs Trib.

PurpleKittyKnitting · 13/05/2012 15:54

I am back to my 'stock' sheet I printed off the first time, from a charity that were covering a double decker bus!

ChakotayBlue · 13/05/2012 16:30

Thank you WhoKnows, I'll look at it this evening when DS has gone to bed.

KnottyLocks · 13/05/2012 16:32

PK, we don't need your square quite that big, my lovely Smile

tribpot · 13/05/2012 17:29

Yup, don't worry Purple, the number of stitches can only ever be a guide because exactly how many you need to make 6" will vary enormously depending on how tightly or loosely you knit. When we did the last lot of blankets I was having to make sort of 'special needs' patterns for myself that were many stitches narrower than for everyone else because my gauge is, basically, shit.

So, for the sheep, I'm gonna do a pattern of 34 stitches for RedRosie on 4mm, it sounds like you would need c. 40 on 3.25 mm thus probably closer to 34 on 4mm? Maybe knit a few rows with 35 on and see how it looks. Remember, how wide it is after you've cast on is no guide to how wide it will be once you've knit a few rows as the cast on stitches are always pretty tight.

For those who are crocheting, I found this handy chart,

crochet.about.com/od/conversioncharts/a/termtranslate.htm

I was following a pattern and getting very confused until I realised that the pattern was American! I haven't crocheted for a while, and I had to look up in a book to check how to do a double crochet. Then I found out that in America, when they say double crochet, that is actually a treble in English. Clear as mud!Confused

Chakotay, it's quite easy to crochet. I learned from a book, and it's much simpler than knitting and the work seems to grow faster. It's also better if you go wrong, it's easy to undo a bit without messing it up completely!

PurpleKittyKnitting · 13/05/2012 17:59

I measured after I had done a few rows. Wanted to do different ones this time.

Just finished a basket weave one, and will try and do a 2 colour granny square tomorrow!

RedRosie · 13/05/2012 18:04

Pistey - has your birdy got a squished beak :o? Poor birdy.

Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 18:10

Norwegian fir not going well so far Sad. Perhaps I need an open sandwich and some Grieg playing to help me... I can't afjord (Wink) too many more mistakes.

KnottyLocks · 13/05/2012 18:23

Just a little reminder that we are on Facebook as MNWoollyhugs. We are starting a 'Behind the Scenes' view of what happens to your squares when they arrive

DontCallMeBaby · 13/05/2012 18:26

Oops, been offline for ages. Knotty, the heart is 5.5" and IS stretchable. Little shells is hard to measure as its got a slightly ribby thing going on that means it contracts. It will stretch to 6" though.

KnottyLocks · 13/05/2012 18:29

I can work with that. Send them Smile

tribpot · 13/05/2012 18:30

Fjord - boom boom! Well done Mole. What's the problem with the Norwegian fir?

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 13/05/2012 18:34
Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 18:38

It's not the Norwegian fir's fault! It's that I don't seem able to count today! Going to resort to ticking each row and possibly each group of stitches. Btw was it 5madthings who had poorly children yesterday? Hope they're better.

Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 18:40

Pidgin-tee hee! Will have to watch rest later - dd2 can deal with mnet while going to sleep but YouTube a bit different!

Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 18:43

Blush (mole quietly bins chart she had been working on)

Pastabee · 13/05/2012 18:52

Have made a rather fetching blue and cream stripy effort and thanks to tribpot I shall be giving Chinese Waves ago tonight while DH catches up with F1 channel. Yawn.
