We heard yesterday the very sad news that Greengoose's beautiful baby daughter, Merryn passed away. Greengoose's thread can be found here

We have offered to make a blanket for the family. We hope that it may give whatever comfort it can to them all.

So, we need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have and will put together the blanket.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball plus P&P.

Crafters, if you need wool, please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

The wool we are using is:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • knitters cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

The Colours:

Blues, warm purples, pinks, greens, silvers and cream

Ideas for squares:

Birds have a symbolic meaning to the family so if you could incorporate any bird design that would be lovely.

Please don't feel daunted by this as we really love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on the WoollyHugs website. We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs.

As always, thank you so much for your support.

Thanks

The furthest away crafter on a blanket project that I remember was New Zealand!

Alambil · 08/05/2012 21:17

oh no :(

Please may I be included on the crafter list - can't afford wool, though I'm afraid.

My mum has also offered to be a recipient for donated wool, if that is ok

I will pm pistey

KnottyLocks · 08/05/2012 21:17

And we had squares for Edgar's thread from Thailand Smile

Lewis, we'll sort wool for you. Smile

PurplePidjin · 08/05/2012 21:18

Yep, for Edgar's quilt we had contributions from NZ and Thailand. We've also had donors from North America and Canada.

There is at least one other European crafter :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/05/2012 21:23

We had a donor from Japan last time.

oh purple I didn't mean anything (sorry if I've offended someone) but when I tried to get involved in a couple of similar things (different forum) was told nope!

But then this is why I love MN everyone is welcome

Off to get my needles out of the wardrobe and dust them off.

KnottyLocks · 08/05/2012 21:37

I'll happily crochet for both. Will PM you Pistey, just marking my place on the thread.

PurplePidjin · 08/05/2012 21:45

You haven't! All efforts are appreciated, and Knotty and I can and will make pretty much any square fit the blanket.

In 11 blankets we haven't frogged a single square! mine don't count

KnottyLocks · 08/05/2012 21:49

Tis true! mine don't count either

Oh so sad. I read Greengoose's thread at work earlier and was in tears. And for it to be the second blanket in such a short space of time is just so poignant.

PMing Pistey now.

100years · 08/05/2012 22:01

Just seen there are two blankets sadly needed. Have PMd my offer to do some for both.

TinyPawz · 08/05/2012 22:25

PM'd for both

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/05/2012 22:25

My PM box is empty. For now Smile

Many, many thanks to everyone for all the offers of help, whatever they are, they are much appreciated. Very touching indeed, the response has been overwhelming.

Thanks
KnottyLocks · 08/05/2012 22:35

Just PMed piste, thank you

Molehillmountain · 08/05/2012 22:57

Would love to knit again. So sad -
Thoughts and love to family. Can provide wool and knit it up.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 08/05/2012 23:10

Pistey, and Knotty -

Thanks and massive kudos to you for organising this (and all other lovely blankets). As others have said, so heartwarming. I can't knit to save my life but would love to donate some wool. New to this - Do I buy it and post it to someone who knows what to do with it? Or can I send some money and the Someone Who Knows would be able to buy it? I would probably buy the wrong stuff, knowing me...

I will in any case send a PM.

KnottyLocks · 08/05/2012 23:13

HTD, if you PM the Piste, she will match you up and give you details on what to get and where to send it to. Thanks so much.
