Pirate you've only been crocheting for a month? That's really impressive. I did my eighth or so square yesterday and it was just awful, really loose and sloppy - I'm getting worse, not better!

Right. I have a pattern that I don't understand. It says:

yo [Sl1. K2tog. psso. (yo) twice] 6 times.

It's the 6 times bit I'm confused on really. Does that mean:

sl1, k2tog, psso, yo, yo,
sl1, k2tog, psso, yo, yo,
sl1, k2tog, psso, yo, yo,
sl1, k2tog, psso, yo, yo,
sl1, k2tog, psso, yo, yo,
sl1, k2tog, psso, yo, yo,

I really hope not, as then I run out of stitches, but I just don't understand what the alternative is.

HELP!!!!

Give me two ticks mumatron and allibubbles and I shall be PMing you
Thanks

Alibubbles you have my sympathy and I got mine only a couple of days after the first people were showing 'works in progress' - even then I was geting all jealous that I couldn't get started and couldn't even plan what I was going to do properly because I didn't know whether I'd be getting one colour or more. Hope yours turns up soon.

Thanks everyone! I did say I might stick to blankets and granny squares for the rest of my life as I just can't understand the patterns! yo,sl,tog,sc, whatever - it's impossible to read! So sorry MinnieBar I have no idea what are you asking Grin
So far youtube and photo-by-photo tutorials have been only way to understand.

MinnieBar I'm trying to get my head round this
yo [Sl1. K2tog. psso. (yo) twice] 6 times

yo ? creates a stitch

then you repeat the bit between the square brackets

sl1 ? will lose a stitch when you psso
K2tog ? loses a stitch
yo x 2 ? creates 2 stitches

so that would even things out and create your pattern without reducing stitches ? two created, two lost however many times you need to do it. However you have also created an extra stitch with the initial yo

So you have an extra stitch on this row ? could be yarn over twice for the pattern to be dealt with in subsequent rows - what does the next row say?

However none of that explains why you're running out of stitches - tell us about what's happening and no doubt someone else will alo be able to help or, if you give me the next row, I'll get my needles out and see if I can work it out

Minnie, have you got a link to the pattern?

link to pattern would help

also my So you have an extra stitch on this row ? could be yarn over twice for the pattern to be dealt with in subsequent rows
makes no sense - should be initial yarn over not yarn over twice

This is the link; unfortunately you have to join the website that it links to in order to see the full pattern (tis at least free!).

It's a 37 stitch line, the full line is:

(K1. P1) twice. K4. yo. [Sl1. K2tog. psso. (yo) twice] 6 times. Sl1. K2tog. psso. yo. K4. (P1. K1) twice.

By my inept reckoning, once you take off the stuff at the beginning and the end, that only leaves 16 stitches for the bit in the brackets, and with all the will in the world that doesn't divide into 16.

But the picture has six holes in it... aarghhh.

Hi Piste, I PMd you on 2nd March, but haven't heard back. I'd really like to knit for this, but need some wool please!

Report
MinnieBar · 09/03/2012 19:14

By 'doesn't divide into 16' I obviously meant 'isn't divisible by 6'.

See MinneBar I can't even tell that your pattern question was knitting one, not crochet Blush. It looks lovely though, wish I could do something like that!

Minnie - I just knit row eleven (the one I think you quoted part of) on your pattern and it worked perfectly and I ended it with 37 stitches... I'm not sure my way above of explaining things is helping, I have to go do dinner etc, but if you'd like me to have another go at explaining, I'll try

Report
MinnieBar · 09/03/2012 20:02

So which bit do you do six times Gleaming?

Sorry to be a pain and a thicko but I've read your explanation twice and I still don't understand Blush.

It's really very kind of you to physically have a go to try and work it out for me! I do appreciate it. Smile

tribpot · 09/03/2012 20:05

Minnie - I was going to have a crack at that one tomorrow. So keep the faith, I will have a go!

By my reckoning you go:

37 stitches

(K1. P1) twice. K4. yo. [Sl1. K2tog. psso. (yo) twice] 6 times. Sl1. K2tog. psso. yo. K4. (P1. K1) twice.

K1 P1 K1 P1 = 4 stitches
K4 = 8 stitches
YO = 9
[Sl1, K2 together, pass the slipped stitch over (so you ignore the Sl1 for counting), YO * 2] = 3 more stitches in total
Do that bit 6 times in total = 18 stitches, in addition to the 9 we'd already done, so 27

Sl 1, K2 together, psso = 1 stitch, 28 in total
YO = 29
K4 = 33
P1 K1 P1 K1 = 37

Ta-da!

Btw I don't really like the idea of two yarn overs in a row though. Bit odd.

Report
GleamingHeels · 09/03/2012 20:26

Minnie no problem - it's a nice little logic challenge

the bit I did six times was *[Sl1. K2tog. psso. (yo) twice]

so I slipped a stitch onto the right needle (still a total of 37 stitches)
knit two together (now down to 36 stitches in total)
passed the slipped stitch over (now down to 35 stitches in total)
yo twice - created two new stitches (back up to 37 stitches)

then did it another five times

so I didn't lose the overall number of stitches and only 'used up' three stitches at a time from left needle to right

Is this helping at all? You don't happen to live near Cheltenham do you - it'd be so much easier to do this together than trying to explain in words - I had to knit it before I could explain it to myself!

Oh, sorry, tribot, you've already explained.

two yarns over - I wasn't too surprised by that - it's an easy way of creating the 'top' of an eyelet or hole - I'm no purist though, no doubt there's a 'proper way to add the stitches back in.

by the way Minnie - Ravelry is fantastic, I was already a member

My head hurts.

I think, I think, I've just had a lightbulb moment. When I looked up PSSO the description compared it to binding off, so I assumed you slip it on the right-hand needle. But - BUT! - you're meant to be putting it back onto the LEFT needle, yes?? That would explain why I'm running out of stitches?
