OMG is anyone watching BBC1 right now!

there is a discussion about women bishops. A (black) woman is pointing out the parallels between racism and sexism. And she is getting attacked terribly!

Bloody Peter Hitchens.

He is such a bully.

The woman (missed her name but think she used to be an agony aunt Jenni someone) was pointing out how the bible condones slavery but Christians and society in general reject that, yet people seem proud of their discrimination against women.

is it Jenni Trent-Hughes? I used to like her on Big Brother programmes.

sethstarkaddersmum · 04/07/2010 10:39

I'm trying to watch this but there are 3 children fighting in front of the tv and the subtitles are never much use on live programmes.

antoinettechigur · 04/07/2010 10:40

yes I think so.

well remembered!

Well it would be getting your blood pressure up I think. Several reasonable feminists and female ministers being shouted down by people accusing them of "not understanding the difference between the sexes" and of "attacking the church".

I knew there is a reason I am usually asleep at this time.

Eurghh he is vile.

antoinettechigur · 04/07/2010 10:44

He really is. So bullying and nasty and patronising. I can't think of the last time some pissed me of so much by being such a cliche!

Is this about the whole "fine, have women bishops, but have male bishops with them too in case they do naughty lady things, with VAGINAS" affair?

antoinettechigur · 06/07/2010 09:07

pretty much.

but also some "don't haave them at all".

Hitchens was particularly bad because he had no objection himself, he just wanted a chance to air the view that men and women are somehow different, so women shouldn't expect to get to do the things that men do. Just because they are women. It wasn't dressed up as anything more nuanced. Jaw drop time.

ugh I've found it now. That's Kate Smurthwaite in the blue shirt contradicting Hitchens's arseholery, she writes the brilliant Cruella Blog, have you seen it?

God he really is an unabated twunt isn't he? I love the way that on one hand he's saying "men and women are different", and on the other he's saying "you're being sexist by saying that all women have qualities in common". Isn't that a bit of a contradiction?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 06/07/2010 13:15

"the way they behave at the moment, demanding complete obeisance to their views, is completely intolerant" - that's women priests he's talking about kids. Not misogynists, say, or religious dogmatists.

great interview with him in the observer a few weeks ago here
