Right, reading these boards recently has given me a bit of a kick up the arse on my feminist principles. I've done a bit of 'light' reading in the area (think The Beauty Myth as a teenager) but think I need something a bit more serious without being so weighty I never pick it up. I'd rather have something published in, say, the last 15 years than any of the 'classics'.

Any ideas?

Maybe my post was unclear. Trans-gender male to female believe that women should accept their definition of women. Why are they women? Because they say so. Any woman who doesn't agree has to shut the fuck up.

I am not sure I know enough to get into the debate that's happening here. I partly didn't get on with Greer's writing style (am shallow...) but it was years ago and the library has FE, so may revisit. Thanks for all the other recommendations too. I really appreciate the time people have taken (and the personalised recommendations)

Oh and sorry RB for the hijack, I'd also support the Faludi recommendation!

frikonastick · 26/06/2010 10:41

There isn't a 'pro-trans' line dittany.

Sakura - shame on you!

"What Is Transphobia?

  • Transphobia (by analogy with homophobia) refers to various kinds of aversions towards transsexuality and transsexual or transgendered people.
  • It often takes the form of refusal to accept a person's new gender expression.
  • Whether intentional or not, transphobia can have severe consequences for the targeted person; also, many transpeople experience homophobia as well, from people who associate gender identity disorder as a form of homosexuality.
  • Like other forms of discrimination such as homophobia, the discriminatory or intolerant behaviour can be direct (e.g. harassment, assault, or even murder) or indirect (e.g. refusing to take steps to ensure that transgender people are treated in the same way as cisgender (non-transgender) people.)
  • Direct forms of transphobia can manifest themselves in ways that are not related to violence. One example of this is the case of Tyra Hunter. Ms. Hunter was involved in an automobile accident, and when rescue workers discovered she was transgender, they backed away and stopped administering treatment. She later died in hospital. Two other well-noted transsexual victims were Brandon Teena and Gwen Araujo." www.homophobia.org.uk/

RibenaBerry,

A great book is Whipping Girl by Julia Serano.

Blackduck · 26/06/2010 16:20

sorry earwicga I don't see you point in quoting MNs Ts and Cs what have Sakura and emskaboo done that contravenes those rules.....? And, BTW, if you really think they have you report the post....

earwicga · 26/06/2010 16:28

Of course I have reported the comments Blackduck. And I am sorry that you don't see that those comments infringe the Terms of Use. I sincerely hope the children and family members of the transphobic women on this thread don't experience gender dysphoria. It would be a cruelty too far.

Blackduck · 26/06/2010 16:41

Well if you think what they said violates the terms you clearly haven't dipped into any other bits of the site! And frankly, no I don't think they have infringed the terms of use but I do think you are being incredibly heavy handed in your approach and attitude.

earwicga · 26/06/2010 16:51

I don't tolerate transphobia Blackduck. I make no apologies for that. Neither do I tolerate any other bigotries.

I get your point, but if you are going to report every single post you find objectionable you are going to have a huge job on your hands - and frankly I think you are close to censorship (along with bigtory one of my pet hates...)

earwicga · 26/06/2010 17:00

Thanks for coming out and publicly showing your transphobia dittany.

You're happy for women to be erased

How are 'women' erased by the existence of trans women?

"You know what I said about throwing your weight around earwicga..."

Dittany uses the tactics of a MRA.

"Women have a right to say that we don't accept men as women, and that removal of a penis does not turn a man into a woman.

Trans women are born as women, labelled at male. They have been and always will be female.

"Julia Serano boasts about his penis in public:

... _embedded#

Some woman he is."

Libel.

"That's the kind of mindfuck women have to accept if they toe the trans line."
There is no 'trans line'. Bigotry is a 'mindfuck'. Fighting it is part of feminism.
