Equal pay victory in Birmingham

here
from BBC:

'Birmingham council staff win millions over pay equality

About 5,000 mainly female council staff have won their case for equal pay at an employment tribunal.
The workers include cleaners, cooks, care assistants and caretakers and were employed by Birmingham City Council.
Unions said the women may be owed £30m in back-pay for bonuses paid only to certain male workers. Solicitors said the pay-out could be up to £600m.
The Unison union said it was a "major" victory. The council said the ruling related to its old bonus structure."

nice to see some good news

Very good news for the workers, and it sends an excellent message......

I did cast a thought to Birmingham council tax payers though, as the money will have to come from somewhere.....

msrisotto · 28/04/2010 12:01

Oh don't worry, I heard on the news that the council will appeal the decision.

happysmiley · 28/04/2010 12:58

Sorry Porto, can't feel too sympathetic to the council tax payers. They gained when the council was ripping off these women, now they will just have to pay it back.

(Or I hope they will if they do go ahead with the appeal.)

Portofino · 28/04/2010 21:29

Presumably the unfair pay practices weren't the fault of the ct payers though - and they will now have to pay for the council's fuck up. I totally agree with the ruling by the way - don't think for one minute that I don't....

janeite · 28/04/2010 21:31

Hang on, how did I, as a payer of council tax in B'ham, gain from this?

JackiePaper · 28/04/2010 21:49

Agree that the council should have to pay up, what i was shocked at was that certain bin men were earning 51k, I think I'll tell DH to forget teaching and become a bin man

janeite · 28/04/2010 21:51

Yes - the council should have to pay up - but it will fall on council tax payers...

I know re: the bin men: I suggested the same to dp this morning too!

blinder · 28/04/2010 21:58

But does anyone else think - ffs this should have happened decades ago!

Imagine if people were paid different amounts by race?

Makes my blood boil.

msrisotto · 30/04/2010 08:04

janeite - we were essentially gaining by getting cheap labour at the expense of women.

maria1665 · 30/04/2010 08:12

And what about the unions who negotiated this appallingly inequitable deal for women in the first place, and who have been squirming around for years dissuading women not to appeal or take derisory payoffs. Hhhmmmm.

Then I guess the councillors should pay some of the money. If you are in the board of directors for a company and the board does something illegal the individual board members are liable. Only fair that it goes for councils too.

2nd Zombie thread.

Along with the GMB, the cheeky fuckers at Unison negotiated some of those misogynistic bonus deals in the first place & had to be taken to court along with the employers in the fight to secure equal pay. Now they've glommed onto the issue & want credit? Cheeky, cheeky, untrustworthy fuckers.
