Feminist music?

Does anyone have any favourite artists who do songs with feminist lyrics? Like for example I am into Dixie Chicks at the moment, and I have just discovered Amy Studt's second album - her first one was good but the second one is much more grown up and just generally better.

Anyone you can recommend?

Ani di Franco ..?? Melissa Etheridge ?

Duritzfan · 07/04/2010 01:51

Hmm what about Natalie Merchant ?
I think that the KT Tunstall song " Ashes" is quite fantastic as well ..

The Miseducation of Lauren Hill is a lovely hip hop/gospel meditation on female strength.

blinder · 07/04/2010 23:01

I mean Lauryn Hill of course!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 08/04/2010 14:15

Does it say something (bad!) that the only feminist music I can think of comes from the Legally Blonde soundtrack (it was a present )

one for example, though I know nothing of the band and not sure about the rifle refs!

PLEASE suggest some better stuff for me!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 08/04/2010 14:15

meant this one

Just working my way through these by sticking them on my spotify playlist - so far am loving Ani Difranco, thank you for recommending her

Patti Smaith
Michelle Shocked
PJ Harvey?

There's a great book by Joy Press called "The Sex Revolts: Gender, Rebellion and Rock n Roll".
Plenty of ideas in there.

My favourite album by Joni Mitchell- Blue. It's a travelogue, an account of the adoption of her baby and full of powerful lyrics, sweeping vistas and immaculate playing by a multi-instrumentalist. Takes at least 5 listens then seeps into your soul.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 09/04/2010 14:28

I LOVE that album too Blinder, one minute you're dancing the next you're weeping.

Duritzfan · 09/04/2010 18:01

Oh Blinder ... LOVE Joni Mitchell....

And yeah Im glad you liked Ani ...."Not A Pretty Girl" is my favourite song ever ...Quickly followed by "32 Flavours" - make sure you get those ..

I dont need to mention Pink do I ?

blinder · 09/04/2010 19:45

Elephantsandmiasmas I know. Such a rollercoaster album. I remember playing it to my (lovely, musical) DP and being horrified when he didn't 'get it'. I will convert him one day though. Mwahaha.

"people say little girls should be seen and not heard, but I say, Oh Bondage, UP YOURS! 1-2-3-OI!"

(Poly Styrene, X Ray Spex)

Molesworth · 11/04/2010 21:58

ooh I loved X Ray Spex

and The Slits

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/04/2010 13:22

God, why isn't there more though? I have just looked through all my music and all I can find is Alanis Morisette, does she count?

DrawUsAPictureLouie · 13/04/2010 16:56

Autopsy by Sandy Denny is a much neglected feminist classic. don't be put off by the oldies in the photo!

here

Adair · 13/04/2010 22:00

Ok, coming back to this.

Sleater-Kinney

Bjork?

I thought of Kristeen Young but have no idea what her lyrics mean. She seems a strong feisty lady though!

Found this blog - www.feministmusicgeek.com

I have a recommendation: Dar Williams. Her song 'I won't be your Yoko Ono' probably fits the bill, as does the terrific 'When I was a boy'. Please give her a try.

randomama · 18/04/2010 23:46

The Muffs? Tribe 8? Bikini Kill? Hole? 7 Year Bitch?
ahh takes me back to my youth!

tethersend · 19/04/2010 00:00

Le Tigre

Earthymama · 19/04/2010 00:12

Can I say Ani di Franco again, she was mentioned earlier, she is amazing, we saw her in London a while ago.

Strong woman, amazing lyrics, great music.....just the job!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 20/04/2010 17:44

Hmmm, what about Ms Dynamite? I loved "It Takes More" and "Put Him Out" and "Sick and Tired". Put Him Out lyrics which should probably be the anthem of the relationships board.

BertieBotts · 25/04/2010 23:23

Ooh have just thought of another, Carly Simon.

Adair - thank you for the link to Feminist Music Geek - and the pointer from the other feminist songs thread. What an utterly wonderful blog Alyx Vesey writes

ILovePonyo · 09/07/2010 16:44

Can I recommend Kristin Hersh and/or the band she was in before she went solo, Throwing Muses?
There's lots to choose from but I think 2 worth a listen are 'Hips and Makers' by Kristin Hersh and 'Limbo' by Throwing Muses.

And another vote for PJ Harvey here, 'Dry' is fantastic!
