Good news I think: more kinds of porn made illegal

No illusion that this will stop porn of strangulation, incest or adults pretending to be under 16 go away, of course. However, I tend to think it's still useful to have those categories illegal, if only because it will make it easier for women, especially young women, who encounter men using it to be confident it really is a red flag and not something they should be cool with.

Yet another law, that will appeal to the peal clutching masses, but have virtually no actual effect in reality, much as the age restriction..

Whilst I support the idea, it is ultimately a waste of time. The government cannot control the internet and needs to stop thinking it can. Any block will be easily bypassed in seconds.

I think the point is it helps set the Overton window

how the ever loving fuck strangling your partner during sex made it’s way into the window I’ll never know

it’s a good thing that the government are taking a stand to be clear that this is not normal or safe behaviour.

I'm so relieved this is happening. Choking can kill, and survivors can die days later from blood clots. Normalisation of such a painful, traumatising act has been a boon for abusive people.

Agreed.

It is good news but not far enough - all pornography should be banned, its a major negative in society without any positive whatsoever.

The reason extreme pornography exists in the first place is because the people who use it soon get fed up with "ordinary" porn and then seek some new thrill.

It seems a lot of porn these days isn't even about sex at all, but about violence, degradation, various fetishes etc. Very concerning given a lot of boys will "learn" about sex this way, chilling really.

However, this move does create an absurd situation in that it will be illegal to watch incest pornography - which "isn't real" of course - but to commit actual incest remains legal (more than half of UK pakistani muslim marriages are incestuous, with people marrying their first cousins).

This is the effect of a government trying to be principled while also allowing special exemptions for client voters.

Its obviously untenable, the ban on incest porn will not be taken seriously while it remains legal to actually commit incest. More joined up thinking needed!
