This was also just reported in Dutch news outlets. Appalling behavior.

So it appears that two men purchased a robot, for a significant amount of money, and the thing that they thought it would be most useful for is use it to assault a young woman.

Wow how the western world has progressed (not)

CrikeyNumpty · 13/10/2026 21:45

I am going to buy one and programme it to kick every passing man hard in the bollocks. Like really fucking hard.

MarieDeGournay · 13/10/2026 22:00

I have this theory, that every new technology, from the printing press onwards, ends up being used by men to be abusive to women in some way.

I believe there was even a problem with abusive telegrams.

Take the example of video cassettes - the big driver for their success was porn.
The internet - global village where everybody would learn to love each other and sing in perfect harmon-eee - how's that going??

So I'm horrified, but not surprised, that robot technology is being led down the same path.

CrikeyNumpty · 13/10/2026 22:14

Man truly is evil, there is no end to their lowness

lcakethereforeIam · 13/10/2026 22:17

It does seem technical advances are often principally designed for war and then used to victimise women.

Christ is this what we’ll have if robots are just walking among us

And why are they allowed to just walk around among us?

AlonsoMosley · 14/10/2026 03:46

It is a pity the girl did not break it!

ChaToilLeam · 14/10/2026 04:34

Just read that the culprits were 16 and 19 years old. The robot was confiscated along with their mobile phones. Apparently it cost at least €5000, where are teenagers getting that kind of money? 😡

And why, after they bought this cool new toy, was their first thought to use it to assault a young woman?

THAT was the best use they could think of for a £5000 top of the line robot? Really?
Pathetic losers.

When you click on the product link you get a pop-up chat box. I used the opportunity to provide some feedback letting them know I'dheard of the assault and suggesting that the next software update might include some personal space controls, and consent concepts... used a fake phone number, but my actual email address...

But, Mutti, you know I want to go into robotics! With an R1, I can begin to learn humanoid programming! Look, it even costs less than your handbag 🥺

... promptly teaches new robot the power hip-thrust.

Yeah that is a battery powered public nuisance and should have to have a driving licence. It isn’t going to take AI to end civilisation at this rate.

DLuffy · 14/10/2026 08:28

Surely those things can kill someone.
Just when you think women have taken all they can, men come along and prove us wrong.

Think that’s what they are designed for - combat?

Should absolutely be licensed.

And those kids should be charged as committing the assault, not some lightweight namby pamby ‘causing distress’ or ‘facilitating the possibility of danger’ type of charge. It should be taken seriously right now.

I remember the early days of the internet and email, when there were two major scams doing the rounds.

The first usually began, "My name is Dave," and went on to describe how you could "MAKE MONEY FAST" (in fact I've just found it on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Make_Money_Fast).

The second was sex. Russian wives, porn, Asian babes, you name it.

Interconnectivity across the globe, with all the possibilities that brings, and so much usage came down to exploiting desires for money and men's desire for sex.

Yep.

I don't actually believe that 'technology is neutral' and that a gun could be used as a paperweight instead of a weapon - I think the culture that produced the technology puts a lot of its identity and values into the things it chooses to produce, and the forms they take.

But even if I did believe that 'technology is neutral', it's very revealing of power structures in our society that the neutrality of a new technology is almost immediately marked as male territory...

edited for clunkiness! I mean, to remove clunkiness😃

Advocating violence. Nice😳

lcakethereforeIam · 14/10/2026 10:58

I'm not going to advocate for a mass bollock kicking for random men. I do think this woman should be given a few minutes to familiarise herself with the controls and, tbf, the boys a 30 second head start.

What's the betting they filmed the assault for one of the platforms.

I've read about smart devices being hacked. We all know you're supposed to cover your computer's camera, although I like to think stories of perverts using this method to spy is more apocryphal than real. When spycams come to light it seems to be usually devices being placed rather than existing ones being hacked (why am I suddenly holding a straw?). I'm sure I recently read about a mass hacking on something by a foreign power somewhere recently. If these devices become a thing I'd hate to think what might happen. If Putin hacks your roomba you just climb a step, if China hacks your fridge it's not going to chase you into the garden. We're really letting technology get ahead of us.

"oooh officer it just went out of control, yes I was holding the controls and wiggling the joystick but that's because I was trying really, really hard to stop my £5k robot humping a teenage girl. I cannot be held responsible for this deranged androids actions. Sob"

If they let men strangle women in 'breath play gone wrong' then no way are teenagers being held responsible for a groping android.

A brave new world of remote assault. Buckle up everyone, if robot ownership becomes a thing it'll affect all our young people.

TrappedByThisDesk · 14/10/2026 13:13

What I find fascinating is that the males didn't choose to directly sexually assault a woman. They didn't choose to involve their own bodies.

I can think of two reasons for this:
a. The sexual thrill was in watching - i.e. it is voyeurism similar to other kinds of voyeurism. This seems the less likely option.
b. The thrill is only indirectly sexual - instead it is all about power and domination, the thrill of abusing a woman. The dynamic is like most rapes, in that it is about power and violence, not sexual gratification. They could have got the robot to simply push or punch the woman, but it had to be a sexual action to drive home that this wasn't about any old violence towards any human, it was specifically about male domination over females.

lcakethereforeIam · 14/10/2026 13:27

I suspect they had this new, expensive toy and after a short while they were bored with it. This was what they came up with to make it interesting again. Lacking the wit and intelligence to do something with it that would be fun for both parties, they did this. Self aware enough to realise using it to physically assault someone would be wrong, they presumed groping and grinding a girl would be okay. Notable they didn't do it to a man.
