Can you be a fully trans inclusive feminist?

Inspired from another thread where it was out of place so I brought it here.

Someone seemed to claim that it was possible to be both be a feminist and to be trans inclusive, where by trans inclusive they mean males in women's spaces and shortlists (the attitude to sport wasn't stated).

I don't believe that you can truly be both, do you?

It is like asking 'can you truly be a vegetarian and eat meat'.

Erm, no.

Even if your Auntie Sue's neighbour calls herself a vegetarian and hosts hog roasts in the garden and virtue signals her 'vegetarian' credentials by ripping the legs off a pig and chomping down on them slurping about how lovely and meaty they are.

I'd see it more like Nana in The Royle Family who wondered why a vegetarian wouldn't have a ham sandwich as the ham was sliced very thinly.

It's only a little bit of meat = it's only a few transwomen/men

“Women” isn’t an identity. It’s the English word used to describe adult female humans.

You want another word to describe people who feel like women - or whatever you need for these weird women vs men quizzes.

I'm expecting the arrival of a quotation from the Cambridge Online dictionary 'proving' that the English word 'woman' now also means 'some men', so I'm getting my retaliation in firstWink

It pops up regularly, but the posters think that just because the Cambridge Online gives current, and often transitory, usage of a word, that means that the definition of the word has permanently changed.

For instance, it also says 'sick' can currently mean 'good' in some contexts, but that hasn't changed the dictionary definition of 'sick' as 'unhealthy'.

'Doctor can I have a good note because I'm too good to go to work today'Grin

I would argue letting trans identified women (ie trans men) into single sex spaces is trans inclusive.

However, letting trans-identified men into women's spaces isn't compatible with feminism, as it deprives women of safety, dignity and legal identity.

There is another issue which is - trans identified people of either sex want to be defined by their identity not their sex. But that isn't compatible with the necessity or indeed the right to choose to be identified by your sex.

You should be able to say "women only because we prefer the dynamics of women only groups" because it's different, and you prefer it (like lesbians. Or just women who get on better in women only spaces.)

The history of men only spaces is more problematic for feminism because institutions like clubs are often networking / power hubs. However, I think men should be allowed to crack on with gay dating and mens' sheds type set ups.

I cannot offer a solution for the informal power networking, but that's a bigger question, because it applies for multiple different groups, in fact.

Who gets to decide that being a feminist means transwomen are allowed in segregated spaces? I am a feminist and I support the inclusion of transwomen - where appropriate.

We would help ourselves so much by labelling things properly. That's the problem with language. Labelling vagina-only spaces as "women" has led to unreasonable and ridiculous conclusions when it comes to trans inclusion.

Anything purely identity-related can include transwomen. Because anything truly identity-related doesn't matter at all. "Women vs men" on a quiz, for example. Who cares if a transwoman is included? She is more than welcome.

People with penises (and extra strength) in a space with no supervision or cameras - of course transwomen cannot be there because that has nothing to do with identity and never bloody did!!!! Use language properly ffs!!! Stop calling those spaces "women" and you fix all your problems.

We're separating penises and vaginas. We're protecting from violence and rape. Not separating "people who like makeup and wearing heels from people who don't". FFS!!!!

Get the labels right and this shit disappears instantly.

Also: this is fuelled by insidious forces trying to justify installing surveillance everywhere. I have already seen cameras in women's vagina-only bathrooms and open bathrooms visible to the rest of the bar, precisely because we're allowing men penises in vagina-only spaces but we know that we cannot have penises in vagina-only spaces!!!!! Obviously!! Omg sick of even hearing about this.

And an absurd situation arises because transwomen are at equal risk of violence / rape if actual men are allowed in these vagina-only spaces. So who benefits?? The insidious forces trying to justify surveillance in every corner of the country.

Anyone reasonably thought to possibly have a penis needs to be questioned / stopped and if they insist, then staff either need to escort them inside the bathroom or ask them to use the disabled toilet. Business owner choice on which. And say no to surveillance in private spaces: both penis and vagina-only private spaces. Thanks.

Oh and if you have a penis and insist on using vagina-only spaces: please sit down to urinate. Thank you.

Well, you could have 'androgenised' and 'non-androgenised' signs, but how many would understand? 'Women' and 'men' works well enough, and they have clear legal meanings.

This.

No.

If you prioritise the desires and feelings of men over women - and are happy to exclude some women, mostly extremely vulnerable women, from provision, access, resources and inclusion because those men find it upsetting to allow them to have any -

you're not a feminist.

You might identify as one and want to pressure others to validate you. But sorry, reality is going to clash with that, and you can't control other people's perceptions. You also probably need really to come to terms with why you want to believe in and support the primacy of men on a binary basis, but have an identity that lets you avoid having to admit to and face it.

DebbieSavage · 07/10/2026 09:44

No silly, I would never say something so blatantly discriminatory about a whole group of people. If you read my post you'll see I was referring to men as the lesser gender!

Ah sorry, that would mean that you don't think transwomen are born with a woman gender identity.

Veilsofmorning · 07/10/2026 11:41

Lexibletheflexible · 07/10/2026 08:55

Yes of course.

Trans inclusive and exclusive feminism are just types of feminism. Like there are different types of socialism. Feminism just means that you believe that structural and societal power is unequally held by men and steps should be taken to address that. Different types of feminists have different approaches and ideas about the best ways to do that.

It doesn't matter how much someone who is trans inclusive tries to say that someone trans exclusive isnt a feminist or vice versa, the fact remains the same.

People often mistake their disagreement with a type of feminism for that school of thought not being feminism at all. People think this about other socio-political movements, too.

You'll find in proper academic circles with respected scholars, nobody thinks like this. It's only on the internet where you have the masses bashing away at their keyboards that you bump into this amateur school of thought.

Just a tad condescending, don’t you think? Or are you being deliberately goading?
would like to define a proper academic circle and a respected scholar, probably not.

I'd love some thoughts on the equality training I did at work last year (an outside org, I'm not going to name).

They very much promoted the opinion they were a feminist organisation and at the same time included transwomen in their definition of women.

To their credit they listed all the protected characteristics correctly.

However when it came to intersectionality (really important in my opinion and in my workplace) they didn't include sex and gender reassignment separately, they just had "gender".

I thought this was really strange. I could see an argument for sometimes including transwomen and women in the same group (not saying I find that logical but I acknowledge that was their stance) but wouldn't true intersectionality need to acknowledge sex and gender reassignment separately?

A group of "women" under their definition will very much face different challenges based upon whether they are female or male (or even whether they have had gender reassignment surgery or not or whether they are perceived as trans or not). Just as the more commonly understood protected characteristics of race and disability would mean women's experiences differ.

It was such a glaring omission in an otherwise comprehensive training.

I came out of the training feeling as though the trainer had had to lie in order to maintain her truth, if that makes sense?

Edited

You aren't missing anything.

That the Genderist take on Intersectional Feminism does not acknowledge the glaring differences in social expectations and outcomes we face because of our physical sex, nor the history of oppression of the female sex, as a possible axis of oppression separate to "gender" is all you need to see to see through the whole edifice.

It is one of the biggest tells that Genderism is a dishonest movement that has adopted the language of Feminism but does not in fact act according to those principles.

To flight for a cause, we have to be able to define it.

Womens lib, means setting women free from the constraints assumed because they are female. Its being aware of how men and woman are treated differently for no reason other than their sex, and how that been used to benefit men and disadvantaged women. For example, women are assumed to be carers, even for random men.

There may be fights to be had around gender, but we have to be able to define it, and it cannot be instead of 'womens lib' because sex discrimination still exists.

And this is what is wrong about changing feminism from womens lib, to gender. It ignores sex, and assumes that women should stop working towards womens lib and focus on gender. Basically be the carers of trans identifying men, put our issues to one side for the benefit of these men.

Gender used instead of sex in feminism is anti feminism.

Okay, I agree with this and it's given me food for thought.

Exactly. I've never seen a woman post an over-excited photo from inside a woman's toilet purely because she was so delighted to be in the women's toilet. It's not something women do.

But I've seen plenty of TW on socials do this, and at least one of them used to post on here.

Most feminists are trans-inclusive, apart from a small group of almost universally white privileged people with a disproportionate influence. They align with neo-cons, incels and Christian nationalists in their obsessive hatred of transgender people.

The shift in language from anti-trans to pro-women, and from trans-exclusionary to sex-based rights is straight from the old-school bigotry used against black people and gay people forever.

If trans women were women they would automatically be included and none of you would have to keep banging on about a special branch of feminism and different definitions and 'seeing them as women'.

You dont even understand that your points make our argument for us.

Merci bien!

It comes down to this. If one (and their supporters) has to argue to the death that they are indeed a woman, they aren’t one.

Yes they are, they are inclusive of trans men, as they are women.

The rest is just laughable nonsense.
