Can you explain? What elephant?

Dylan Mulvaney, I imagine.

dementedpixie · 02/10/2026 08:34

Dylan prancing about pretending to be a girl in gym gear maybe?

The whole “This girl can…” shtick gets on my nerves. Are women not allowed to do… well, whatever? What about boys v. men?

allthemind · 02/10/2026 08:39

Dylan Mulvaney effect. Like Bud light. Guess they forgot that .ost kids trainers are bought by their mums. When will they learn.

Also, someone at Adidad marketing deserves a pay rise and teenagers have decided that brands other than Nike and Adidas are acceptable now.

Nike own Converse

There's currently a backlash against Converse due to the racist imagery they used in recent campaigns

AmandaHoldensLips · 02/10/2026 08:46

They made a decision to sell direct to consumer via online channels, so retailers quite rightly started stocking other brands on the empty shelves Nike had left.

By the time Nike realised the unfolding disaster of their strategy, it was too late. Those shelf spaces were now successfully filled by their competitors.

The prancing Dylan monstrosity won’t have helped the cause either. Look at what happened to Budweiser.

I didn’t see the Converse advert backlash early this month.

But I can say that one of my daughters used to live in Converse (long narrow feet), but now says that the quality has gone downhill, and they simply don’t last. They are also less comfortable. She’s converted to Sambas/Spezials/whatever.

Another image from the same campaign was of two people trying to get a pair of shoes hanging on a tree

The image was angled so that it appeared they were robbing a hanging corpse

Lynch mobs are a dreadful memory for black people in the USA and a number of relatively young black people have been found hanging in recent months

The Converse name is seen on a storefront at an airport in Singapore earlier this month

Converse pulls 'deeply upsetting' advert after backlash

Social media users say an image from the brand's Instagram account resembled a KKK hood and hanging.

Except the picture was deliberately cropped to create the controversy. This is the full image.
And you're right that a number of black people have been found hanging, which is a tragedy. In some cases the investigation has found that it was suicide (including one where they have CCTV footage) and another case where a woman was hanged and the suspects (3 arrests so far?) are all black men. This hasn't stopped some people leaping to make videos about how there's an epidemic of lynchings and "black people don't hang themselves". Obviously racism exists, but this isn't it.

This is either naive or disingenuous. The controversy is based on historical lynchings, over 4,000 of them, not on contemporary events.

Chersfrozenface · 02/10/2026 09:26

And the financial results on which the BBC story are based are for a period before the latest Converse controversy.

ArabellaScott · 02/10/2026 09:31

That is a funny looking link. I still don't understand, and I don't click on links from usernames I don't recognise. Can you explain?

Image doesn't seem to have appeared - maybe it will or just search for it. This was a Korean ad campaign. The image crop was dishonest and designed to provoke. And yes, there were historical lynchings, but I was responding to PP's post about recent events.

It wasn't racist at all, it was an Asian woman in a billowy white skirt, common for Asia, holding a pair of trainers in her hand, once upon a time it would have been considered arty. The fact that frothing at the month racebating CRT morons have decided to pile on because they're over fertile imaginations see racist, racist, racist everywhere, is not Converse's fault. The company was in trouble way before this, they made some seriously bad business decisions last year and are now paying the price for it.
