Women's Rights and Rejoining the EU

(I posted this earlier on my Burnham and women's rights thread, but I think it's going to get buried there, so started a new thread)

Following Andy Burnham's speech, someone started a thread about what the re-entry to the EU should be called:

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/eu_referendum_2016_/5584173-what-shall-we-call-the-return

Let's not rehash the pros and cons of Brexit here (there are plenty of other threads for that). There might be some economic benefits to rejoining the EU, but if women's rights get lost in the shuffle (and you know they would!), I don't want any part of rejoining.

I think it's unlikely, but, in case it does happen...

What I'm wondering is what would be the ramifications for women's rights in Great Britain and NI if (and that's a very big if) we were to rejoin?

Would there be any? Could anybody with legal expertise enlighten us, please?

Then so did men. Clearly you're talking nonsense.

Men aren't in need of targeted affirmative action to redress discrimination directed against them as a group. They're already the default in society; making them unrecognizable as a social category would simply perpetuate that status quo. Astonishing you as a self-proclsimed feminist can't recognize the difference.

Germany fines women for referring to men as "he".

I want no part in a law making body where one of the strongest members does this.

It's a bit more complex. The new Self-ID law does indeed permit fines, but exclusively as an anti-doxxing provision. It's never been tested in practice and It's hard to see how it could even work for somebody who's not entirely stealth, perfectly passing and solely a private citizen rather than public figure.

There have been a couple of legal cases involving "misgendering". All of these were argued as perceived insults on the basis of libel law; none involved fines and i believe none of them got beyond the preliminary injunction level to full-blown court proceedings.

This is a big topic, Like a lot of MN posters, I suspect, I wish we never left the EU, and would be interested in rejoining if feasible. BUT, there a big problems ahead. Would we be forced to take the euro? I don't have a strong view on that, but I suspect the British public would not be keen. You can't help thinking that Burnham is only considering economic benefits. And yes, the gender issue is massive, especially considering how things are in Germany, as PP have said. My best hope is that we hold off for a few years, until Terf Island has shown the Europeans the way!

I wonder how many crimes have been committed by transwomen, but reported as committed by women. When the news outlets routinely lie, we have no way of knowing what is actually happening.

Just ask anyone here. They can apparently tell at a hundred paces who's trans and who isn't. And given the singular obsession of many, you can bet whatever you've got that there would be multiple threads on each and every instance.

Yes we would need the euro and we would no longer have our veto

I think every country that has Self ID also has a 'Conversion' therapy ban, the reason why the left in this country are pushing for one so hard is because everyone else has one, we want one too.
The EU is a sinking ship, by chance we left before it started to go under, only the Brits would be stupid enough to want to leap back on board, so we can sink to, everyone else is, us too, us too.
We'd have to take the Euro, we wouldn't get the rebate back, we'd have to take more immigrants, our economy is in dire straits but even we're doing better than France and Germany at the moment, all of the advantages we currently have over the Blob will go.
There is no benefit for women or children in rejoining the EU.

There have been court cases in France for similar. We had an appeal on the forum not long ago from a victim convicted felon for help publicising it.
