National domestic abuse charity Women’s Aid has published the findings from a survey of its members which showed that 100% of respondents supporting survivors affected by the Early Release Scheme (ERS) report women are feeling scared for their physical safety, as first tranche of prisoners ready for early release on October 1st.

The survey also found that 94.7% of those supporting women affected by the ERS said that survivors felt mentally unprepared for the release of their perpetrators and a staggering 78.9% also said that the survivors they were assisting with the scheme were feeling scared for the safety of their children, with some being forced to relocate or go into a refuge, as they prepare for their perpetrators to be released.

Also extremely concerning is that 84.2% said that survivors expecting the release of their perpetrators felt that their views have not been considered as part of the planned release and some even reported that for those who have been involved in discussion about licensing conditions, they were left with more questions than answers.

What a nightmare. The very fact that letters have been sent to the victims shows that the authorities know this is a potentially dangerous move.

The letters are part of the victim contact scheme. Victims are notified of changes even before the changes in legislation. They can be informed of move to Cat D, release and any recalls. It existed before these legislation changes.

And not everybody who should get a letter gets one.

I haven't read this is full, but Women's Aid is part of a scheme where (a small bit of) funding has been allocated to provide support for those impacted by the early release.

Details in the article

NB the advice is for service providers but in it a link to contact for individuals needing the support.

And not everybody who should get a letter gets one.

Only certain offences and sentences are eligible and not everyone takes up the offer.
