Holiday let homes 'being used for sex work' with men turning up with Google Maps

Growing concerns are emerging over the use of short-term holiday let properties in Liverpool as illegal bases for sex work, where women are being exploited and where bookings are surging around major sporting events.
Residents in one city street told the ECHO they believe a nearby house is being used as a base for sex work, with men 'turning up looking at Google Maps' at all hours, and individuals coming and going throughout the night and day.
Alarm has been raised over suspicious activity at a property on Dominion Street in Liverpool's Tuebrook area, with Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council now investigating the address. A prominent figure in supporting victims of modern slavery and trafficking told the ECHO today that the rise in holiday lets being exploited for sex work was an "uncomfortable truth" the city must confront.
It is illegal under UK law to run or manage a property for the purposes of sex work. Merseyside Police confirmed to the ECHO that they are aware of allegations of "suspicious activity" at an address on Dominion Street.
Cllr Jeanie Bell is the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner and also leads the region's Modern Slavery Network.
She confirmed to the ECHO that the use of short-term holiday lets for sex work is on the rise — and that there are particular spikes around large sporting events in the city, where lots of people are flooding in. sent twice daily to your inbox
Cllr Bell noted that while many of the women involved are foreign nationals, a significant number of British sex workers also feature within that group. She continued: "There's a whole question about, are they there voluntarily? Is it their choice? If they're in a short-term let, then that's inappropriate anyway.
"When Merseyside Police teams go in, they take a victim-first approach. So, they will go in and speak with those women to make sure that they are there of their own volition and will offer to remove them to safe houses.
She further stated: "We need to keep them safe. Some people choose sex work and that's fine. I believe it is a woman's choice to do whatever she chooses to do with her body, but that has to be her choice and not controlled by somebody else.
"But it is an industry, and you've got to ask, how much autonomy do women have in that industry? And would those men running it be happy for their wives, daughters, sisters, or mothers to be working in that industry?".
