Gloria Steinem, who became a face of the women's liberation movement in the US, has died, aged 92, her foundation says.

In a post on Instagram, it said she "passed away peacefully" at her home in New York City, "surrounded by many who loved her".
Steinem, who was a writer and magazine editor, co-founded the Women's Action Alliance, a group dedicated to fighting sexism, more than 50 years ago.
She started her career as a journalist in New York in the 1970s and went on to co-found Ms. magazine, one of the first publications to focus on other women's issues than the perils of housekeeping and the mandates of the beauty industry.
During the 1970s, Steinem was one of the main voices campaigning for women's reproductive rights.
She celebrated the US Supreme Court's 1973 ruling in the case of Roe v Wade, which granted women the constitutional right to abortion. Nearly half a century later she witnessed the reversal of this decision.

What a woman. One of my absolute hero’s. Reading Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions at 17 changed the way I behaved in the face of injustice. And many of her essay, especially about porn, still hold true. “Erotica is as different from pornography as love is from rape, as dignity is from humiliation, as partnership is from slavery, as pleasure is from pain.”

Very sad, she really dedicated her life to activism for the things she believed in. I was born in the late 70's and so to me the 60's and 70's don't seem so very long ago when she was at the height of her fame and young and suddenly she is 92 and gone. She always still seemed so young when she'd appeared publicly in recent years. Life is very fleeting but Gloria lived it well and left a lasting mark on the world.

I wouldn't look at comments under the BBC posts about her - all the usual far-right misogyny.

She was brave as fuck, trailblazing and magnificent. Only someone with an open mind can interrogate their own beliefs as she did. Expect to see her attacked for standing up for all women, by men who could never hold a candle to her.

Yes, this! She was a legend.

Came on to say this. An amazing women who did a lot of good but took a disappointing position later in life. I couldn’t believe it when I heard her on Elizabeth Day’s podcast talking about how she had “educated herself” about “two spirit people”.

Of course it made sense given Elizabeth Day’s own position on the issue.

It's sad that there's a 'but...' when celebrating the life of this brilliant woman.
Transgenderism's reach and potential to damage is immense.
But for now, nothing more than RIP to a brave, brave feminist. RIP.

Well said. She was an amazingly brave and brilliant woman but I was so disappointed in her in recent years

Like so many feminists, a woman with an amazing record of standing up for women's rights bought into the lie that men could become women if they say they are.

Disappointing and painful as that is, it shouldn't detract from her history and achievements.

I went through a phase of thinking it was just another thing that had been needlessly demonised. That 'be kind' lazy thinking got dented by things like reading Jan Morris's self-indulgent nonsense, and destroyed for good when young women I knew started to choose gender as the self-harm technique of choice.

RIP Gloria, and thank you.
