Hampshire Cricket Club cover themselves with glory

Hampshire are currently bottom of Division 1 of the County Championship. To try to turn their fortunes around they signed a New Zealand overseas player named Scott Kuggeleijn. Kuggeleijn has been a pariah in cricketing circles after twice standing trial for rape in 2015. He was acquitted, but not before some pretty damning material emerged during the trials.

Hampshire obviously knew this would be problematic, because instead of publicly announcing the signing, they quietly snuck Kuggeleijn's very hard to type name onto the team sheet for a match with no fanfare. Once this emerged there was a backlash, not least from Hampshire's own women's side, and they have now been forced to backtrack on the signing.

I don't think this reflects well on the management of the club, personally.

I saw the Hampshire announcement on my FB feed and wondered what it was all about so thank you for sharing.

During the trial, the complainant told the court she had said no “dozens of times” on the night the incident took place. In giving evidence, Kuggerleijn said: “I tried [having sex] twice, like she might have said ‘no, no’ a few times but it wasn’t dozens of times.”
