Today was another Parkrun Saturday and like every weekend the achievements by women was demoted by men running in the female category.

We are hoping to change this! In only a few weeks time, we will debut Reality Rules Runners UK at Parkrun. We hope that many hundreds (hopefully thousands) of you will join us to send a clear and strong statement to Parkrun about the huge support there is for fairness and sex-based categories at their events.

All sports events are responsible for putting on fair events. This includes free, volunteer run, community events like Parkrun.

So please tell people about Reality Rules Runners UK, as we are hoping to attract lots more supporters before our debut at Parkrun on 3 October.

Reality Rules Runners have sent out an email requesting that you don't register on Park Run as a member of their running group until a later date.

If I'm marshalling on the last corner and notice the first man comes in at 18:00 but that man is recorded as a female in results then, yes, I will be emailing the local core team and parkurn HQ about it.

All these people saying how would you enforce it are just hiding behind the question because they don’t want to address the fairness issue.
If we saw someone doing two laps instead of three at parkrun, we would do something about it. We wouldn’t just say “oh it’s too hard to enforce”. (Perhaps they identified as having run three laps when they only did two!)

If cheating is too hard to enforce, we should get rid of the age limit for junior parkrun as well.

Honestly, I’m so sick of all these stupid questions! They are popping up on Facebook and X. People don’t really care about the fairness aspect at all which is the premise we start from.

I’ve been called a c* and blocked by TRAs on X in the last few days simply for asking for fair opportunities for women and girls. Both men, of course. This is just another very convenient way for them to manifest their misogyny.

Gender radios for running/walking and volunteering

Interesting. The numbers aren’t far off 50:50 for volunteering (majority female) but there is a more significant majority of men running and walking. Run directors are majority men.

Locally/anecdotally I would say that the volunteers I know enjoy it for its own sake and make friends that way. A significant minority of regular volunteers never do the course. This a a mixture of men and women.

Says it all, doesn't it. He's prioritising a man he doesn't even know over his own daughter. I wonder how she feels, not just about potentially losing a race, but about her father's betrayal of her rights.

Yes. Those people declaring it is too hard to enforce don’t realise that there is little ‘enforcement’ done on any policy or law at the time. It doesn’t stop there being the protection in the first place though.

It is a replica of the argument we see around single sex provisions. Perhaps people have seen the argument and thought it convincing without actually thinking past the superficial level. It is not a plausible reason at all.

'Let’s start with the facts. In 2019, 1.12 million people in the UK, Ireland, Australia and South Africa registered for parkrun, over 600,000 of whom were female. The female majority in registrants is evident across all four major territories, ranging from 53% females in the UK, to 57% in Ireland and South Africa. This far outweighs the population ratio which in all four territories is around 51% female. In isolation, this statistic implies that parkrun is more appealing to females. But perhaps the biggest hurdle is yet to come. You’ve registered for parkrun, now you’ve got to participate.

On a given Saturday in 2019 in the UK, the average proportion of female walkers and runners was 44%, a 9% drop from the female registrants. But what does this stark difference between the female share at registration and participation actually tell us?

Almost a third of registrants for parkrun never take part in a 5k event. When we look closer at this pool who are yet to participate, we see that more of them are female. The overall result is that the 53% female majority at registration drops to 51% of all who go on to actually complete a 5k parkrun. So what started as an event more appealing to female registrants, now has the reverse effect upon completing the registration form.'

See, this doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

To an outsider, it looks to me like Parkrun is complacent about the fact that it is using women's time and effort to prop up men's egos. That goes wider than the 'trans' issue.

What's a bit depressing is that it can just reflect everyday society and still be reliant on women doing the dogsbody stuff. Nobody will even notice.

Why?

Well I assume they're mostly women. Men are less likely to volunteer their time for free (and yes, I know NAMALT, not my Nigel etc).

Depends on the sport or activity in my experience. Out of the dozen or so volunteer coaches down my rowing club only two are women despite the club membership being 50 / 50. All the youth football and rugby coaches and assistants I saw were men.

I think it is because they want to make a big splash on the day and are aiming to have a big inaugural week. They are taking some time to gather support so that they can hit the ground running on 3rd October. It is the parkrun anniversary weekend which is part of their thinking. They have put out a warning that people will be watching the group as some have joined early so some pressure, yes. The group already exists within the parkrun system and someone must have approved it as you can’t just make a group you have to ask parkrun to do it for you.

I expect they mean don't sign up until after the Saturday before the 3rd of Oct? So that the 3rd Oct is the first run.

Yes that is exactly what they mean.

Here is how you make a group. They reserve the right not to approve group names. I expect if parkrun hadn’t allowed it the publicity would have been worse for them.

I’ve ordered my T-shirt. It’s free shipping this weekend. I will be wearing it on the side but must admit I am a bit nervous about getting abuse. And as we all know, despite the both sides argument, it only ever comes from one side.

The ‘Parkrun is failing’ video briefly goes through the argument of ‘it is not a competition’ and describes how by including male people in the female category, parkrun is the very opposite of being ‘inclusive’.

It is similar to this ‘Save Women’s Sports’ video

Mara says, "I'm here with a lot of my fellow sex realists. We are quietly protesting against parkrun's gender self ID categories. Any male if he says he's a woman or even if he doesn't say he's a woman, any male is welcome in the female category."

"Official results are published every week in descending order of speed. The rankings mean in reality it is a race and that is unfair for women and girls."

And then

"You can call it anything you like, but the facts of Parkrun are, measured courses, start and finish line."

Other brave women also keep raising the valid points such as:

"it's a race if you run it like a race"

and

"That opportunity to treat it like a race should be there for everybody because it is there for men"

Here is a good analysis by Mara of how male people entering as female athletes impact others.

“Parkrun: good illustration today of how self-ID corrupts age grade rankings.

A male in his 60s ran parkrun in Australia in the Female category. If he’d run in the Male category, he’d have been 6th in the age grade rankings with a score just over 70%. But because he ran in the Female category, his age grade score was just over 86%. This rocketed him up to the top spot by a massive margin (well over 10%).

The runners who got bumped down were:

1. A young man who was 1st to finish so he was robbed of being 1st by time and 1st by age grade.

2. A woman in her 60s who’s a devoted parkrunner & has done >100 parkruns;

3. A man in his 60s, also devoted & is close to having done 200 parkruns;

4. A woman who, despite being in her 40s, was near the top of the Female finishing order. She’s done >70 parkruns;

5. A man who, despite being in his 50s, was near the top of the Male finishing order. He’s done >50 parkruns.

All these very good runners who are devoted parkrunners suffering unfairness & being robbed of their hard-earned place in the age grade rankings, and all for what? So that parkrun can indulge the beliefs of men who say they are women. So much unfairness inflicted on men & women bc parkrun can’t bring itself to say no to these men & implement sex at birth categories.”

It sounds like they now want people to go for it and join the group ahead of time.

Be aware that if you join and run or walk then your name and parkrun venue will appear on the consolidated club report for that week and, if it is your primary club, then the club name will appear next to your name on the results of the event you do. Anyone can click on your name and see all your parkrun history.

I am 90% sure that if you volunteer you will be counted as participating for that week but your name is not associated with the club anywhere. If you join and don’t run/walk or volunteer then you are counted in the total number of group members. They are up to about 160 just now so not as many as they want but I guess a lot of people are waiting for the week leading up to 3rd October as that was the original plan.

Anyway go for it if you feel strongly. I am not trying to make anyone shut up. Only stopped debating as I had made all my points and listened to yours and we were going round in circles.

Nothing to see here. At all.

And people wonder if there is a reason new female runners don’t feel welcome.
There really is a significant difference between ‘inclusion’ and making the events fair for all and therefore supporting female fair participation

I was coming onto this thread to ask people to sign up to the RRR running club. They were originally asking people not to sign up until the week before the official launch on the 3rd of October but so many people were joining that they’re saying to go for it now. They need a lot more people to join now to get into the list of the top 20 running clubs.

I saw Mara’s post about Claire being beaten to first female by a man this morning. Enraging!

I’ve spent a long time on Twitter over the last couple of weeks and have had the most unbelievable abuse for calling for fairness for women and girls. I’ve blocked various Neils, Simons and Grahams. And I was called a c* for the first time ever on there by a Simon who was getting very angry at the idea that women could have a category to themselves.

If you happen to see this thread, parkrun HQ, please sort this out. You created this mess and you could fix it easily.
