Concerns about UKCP consultation on sex and gender guidance

Just seen this on X . Members of the public can respond. I haven't had chance to read yet.

The @UKCP_Updates has announced the opening of its 12 week consultation into "conversion practices and GSRD guidelines". GSRD stands for gender, sexuality and relationship diversity.

Bear in mind that the UKCP has been censoring all dissent and debate surrounding sex and gender in all of its conferences and publications for years now, so it has merely declared that it is going to 'consult' its uninformed members on what they think, without any dissemination of information, and without debate. This is undemocratic in the extreme.

Furthermore, they have narrowed exactly what they are going to consult their members on, which is "a definition of conversion practices" and "good practice principles". I trust I don't have to explain how they consider gender ideology a fait accompli.

They have then cherry picked who they have consulted to draft the documents that they allege to be consulting their members upon.

None of them are those who understand humans can't change sex. They have only consulted organisations which adhere to gender ideology.

This will then be used to 'form policy'.

The UKCP is about to embed into its policies that humans can change sex through 'gender identity', and that therapists are not permitted to challenge this lie.

I'm going to try and say this as simply and as clearly as I can. The UKCP is currently a danger to the general public. Unless MPs and reporters take up this issue, this registering body for psychotherapists and counsellors is going to embed into its ethics charters that it's possible to change sex and none of us therapists who know this is a lie will be able to do anything about it.

Thanks for this, going to add it to the BABCP thread also. Psychologists and psychotherapists (or their professional bodies) seem to be extremely unwilling to jump off the bandwagon as it teeters on the edge of the cliff.

It's worrying that so much activism seems to be coalescing around the Draft Conversion Bill.

They're not going to let go of this easily.

It seems like a strange backwards step for UKCP to take, if they revert from this position:

James Esses successfully sued them, meaning they learned the hard way that their therapists need to have the space to explore patients' feelings about gender dysphoria without automatic affirmation.

I guess the looming threat of the conversion therapy Bill means their position might end up muddled. But out of all the professional bodies for psychiatrists, this is the one that I was expecting to stick with common sense. (After they were forced to find it)

Just realised that it's being led by a body within which UKCP sits, rather than directly by UKCP. I should have read the OP properly!

However, I'd still be very surprised if UKCP wanted to back away from their position after James Esses successfully sued them.

Background to the decision
At the time of signing the MoU in 2016, the understanding of the UKCP Board of Trustees was that it only related to over-18s....

In 2019, without consultation with UKCP, our Board of Trustees was informed that the MoU relates to all ages. The MoU was scheduled for a full formal review in July 2021; however, this review did not take place....

Since November 2023, in light of new and emerging evidence which has raised fresh concerns around child safety, the UKCP CEO and Chair have attempted on several occasions to engage with the Coalition Against Conversion Therapy to discuss a number of important issues and concerns including definition of terms. We have not, as yet, been able to have this dialogue. Due to our professional concerns on this issue currently remaining unaddressed, the decision was made with regret that UKCP needs to withdraw its signature from the Memorandum of Understanding on Conversion Therapy in the UK v2 (MoU) and its membership of the Coalition Against Conversion Therapy.

Thanks for the update, that sounds encouraging, if UKCP can't get a dialog with the Coalition, maybe they're not as organised as I feared, or they don't have any coherent version of what they think 'conversion therapy' is.
Good on UKCP for recognising there's a problem with this so-called coalition and withdrawing their support, maybe more organisations will come to the same conclusion.
