'About the Course
This is a session on the criminal justice process for professionals supporting women who are survivors of sexual violence. While we will focus on a context of supporting survivors of sexual violence, much of the content will also be relevant for those supporting survivors of other forms of gender-based abuse.
The training will cover:
- Reporting violence and/or abuse to the police
- Medical examinations
- Giving a statement and ABE
- Investigation
- Charging processes
- Bail and remand
- Withdrawing a complaint
- Going to court: What happens at court, the trial process, verdict, appeals, special measures
- Particular stress points in the criminal justice system for survivors, including questions about sexual history and pre-trial therapy
Who this training is for?
This training is for non-legal professionals in England and Wales who support women who are survivors of sexual violence, working across the community, voluntary, and statutory sectors. While the session focuses on supporting survivors of sexual violence, much of the content is also relevant for professionals supporting survivors of other forms of gender-based abuse.
This includes:
- Refuge workers, IDVAs, ISVAs
- Social workers, housing officers, and outreach workers
- Health professionals
- Commissioners and Local Authority Officers responsible for commissioning VAWG services.
