Government renews funding for Rape Crisis Helpline (England & Wales)

Rape Crisis England & Wales has been awarded new Ministry of Justice funding to continue providing specialist and confidential support for survivors and victims of sexual violence around the clock.

So whilst this is good news, some may not now that until 4 years ago, ie 2022, the Government didn't fund a Rape Crisis Helpline.

Prior to that a Helpline run by volunteers at Rape Crisis South London with financial support from a charitable trust, provided a service for survivors of rape.

I think the first Rape Crisis Support Line was set up sometime in the 1970s. So it took over 40 years before a UK Government thought survivors of rape were important enough to fund a helpline.

Strange to tell but Boris Johnson when Mayor of London funded 4 local (in London) rape crisis support lines, and 2022 was also Tory, but with so many prime ministers not sure if that was also Johnson.

Unlike the Domestic Violence Helpline (England) that I think got Government Funding back in the 1990s. (Labour?)

It's fantastic that this funding has been renewed.

Excellent. Unfortunately more needed than ever, given the destruction of virtually all support services (especially CAMHS) under the Tories.

We badly need proper funding for Family Services, the justice system and proper psychiatric counselling.

Kills me how many abused children in secondary schools have been denied any form of justice and are now criticised for suffering poor MH.

The government needs to halt its planned cancellation of College Diploma courses which give teenagers and 20somethings who dropped out of school a second chance.
