Government renews funding for Rape Crisis Helpline (England & Wales)

Rape Crisis England & Wales has been awarded new Ministry of Justice funding to continue providing specialist and confidential support for survivors and victims of sexual violence around the clock.

So whilst this is good news, some may not now that until 4 years ago, ie 2022, the Government didn't fund a Rape Crisis Helpline.

Prior to that a Helpline run by volunteers at Rape Crisis South London with financial support from a charitable trust, provided a service for survivors of rape.

I think the first Rape Crisis Support Line was set up sometime in the 1970s. So it took over 40 years before a UK Government thought survivors of rape were important enough to fund a helpline.

Strange to tell but Boris Johnson when Mayor of London funded 4 local (in London) rape crisis support lines, and 2022 was also Tory, but with so many prime ministers not sure if that was also Johnson.

Unlike the Domestic Violence Helpline (England) that I think got Government Funding back in the 1990s. (Labour?)

It's fantastic that this funding has been renewed.

Excellent. Unfortunately more needed than ever, given the destruction of virtually all support services (especially CAMHS) under the Tories.

We badly need proper funding for Family Services, the justice system and proper psychiatric counselling.

Kills me how many abused children in secondary schools have been denied any form of justice and are now criticised for suffering poor MH.

The government needs to halt its planned cancellation of College Diploma courses which give teenagers and 20somethings who dropped out of school a second chance.

I don't know if I am being over critical, but have just been checking the details about the service because of a new thread on FWR.

And whilst I do know that some men are raped, what seems like a huge picture of a man on the info page about the services seems a bit strange.

But worse is seeing the support line as being open to "all genders".

I wonder if this is all part of the condition of funding.

Let alone implying that maybe the support line if run by "all genders".

I am sure that the support offered is empathetic and appropriate.

And maybe I am just over reacting to how the web page is designed.

But do wonder if any of those actually providing the service were asked to give feedback on the design and wording.

Why is it worse that the support line is open to all genders? Seriously - it's a rape crisis line. ANYONE can be raped. The most prolific rapist in this nation's history raped hundreds of men - very recently. You're not just being 'over critical' you're being utterly outrageous.

Why you are on this forum is just pointless.

You dont have the first concept about women's rights, and the standards feminists have created.

As the vast majority of rape victims are women and the perpetrators are men, it is incredibly alienating to have such an image.

Some might even say triggering.

And in the past no Rape Crisis Centre would have stooped to doing anything outside of the shared understanding of creating an environment sympathetic to women.

Every time you post something you just expose your ignorance.

And you dont care.
