Lennon failed to find sufficient support for her leadership bid, and then berated Labour for being 'stuck in the past'.

Monica Lennon backs trans people after Scottish Labour leadership blow

The Glasgow MSP issued a hard hitting statement after it emerged she had not received enough support to become a candidate.

Monica got the required support from two unions, just let down by the politicians.

Clusterfuckular · 17/08/2026 17:11

'In the race to succeed Anas Sarwar, candidates needed the support of three Labour MSPs, three Scottish Labour MPs and two trade unions to get on the ballot.

Lennon, a Glasgow MSP, met the union threshold but fell short among parliamentarians after a push to keep her out of the contest.'

...

'The race will now be between two male MSPs, Michael Marra and Joe Fagan.
One issue said to be preventing parliamentarians from backing Lennon is her support for trans rights.
Marra and Fagan believe Labour made a mistake in backing the SNP Government's gender reforms, while Lennon is a trans ally.'

A candidate isn't 'let down' if they are considered unsuitable for the position.

I have my own personal rule that anybody who uses the cliché 'punching down on..' is Unfit For Public Office because either incapable of independent analysis or original expression, or both.😏

She will have to 'do better'

Oh, I see she used that one too

Like nurse Peggie punching down on Dr Upton.

Punching down 🙄. While she gazes up, sycophantically but pointlessly, at men who want access to females' single sex spaces.

Agree. I could have worded that better. I was struck that unions are more willing to back a trans candidate. I always used to think of unions are quite traditional. But in this respect apparently more progressive than politicians.

This assumes that the trans ID was significant here. It may not have been the decider.

Clusterfuckular · 17/08/2026 18:50

She isnt trans!

Daft bint, good riddance

Most people don’t give 2 fucks about trans people who have already had a disproportionate amount of political time spent on them.

Clusterfuckular · 17/08/2026 18:53

If we are going to have a hierarchy of oppression that means certain people are above (below) criticism, I feel we need a proper diagram. Which way is Monica punching? Are her targets up enough? Can we punch sideways? What about those of us who aren't interested in punching at all?

Delighted she didn’t get on the ballot , she is very fortunate even to be a MSP AKA the gravy train.
Labour would be finished in Scotland if that silly woman had won the leadership contest

She did good work on period poverty. (Are TIM affected by period poverty?)

I’ve always assumed unions were a closed shop of hoary old misogynistic men. Everything I hear about them matches my assumptions.

Is / was anyone affected by ‘period poverty?’

Hmm I think you'll find that she jumped on a populist bandwagon, introduced a Bill that was totally undeliverable and needed totally re-written (after Scot Gov had already put a ridiculous amount of money into funding to make period products free), and caused a huge amount of work for civil servants and the Parliament that really added nothing to provision. Great job Monica

I for one am delighted that sense has prevailed and Scottish Labour will not be further dragged into wasting time on more identity politics.

I'd prefer to kick than punch, if there's a vote, it seems like limb discrimination to me. 😁
There are plenty I'd like to kick up the arse, Monica would be first on the list, claiming she didn't get selected because of her support for men's right to invade women's spaces, instead of her total lack of ability to do the job, is just playing the victim card. Another good reason not to select her.

I don’t believe in ‘period poverty’ either.

If you can’t afford tampons, etc, you’re just good old fashioned brassic.

The word you are looking for to describe unions is ‘misogynistic’.

EveryoneIsPointingNow · 18/08/2026 07:18

Those of them who 'have' to carry tampons in case a woman asks for one in the bogs, or whatever other reason they might 'need' them, will get even more of a thrill 🙄 getting them for nothing.

Ah, you're wrong there - these days, they also have a fair spattering of younger men and daft women who are misogynistic in new and exciting ways. And all of them are Kind, but only if you agree with them.

Very pleased that Scottish Labour now sees kow-towing to male fetishists as a vote loser. Hopefully many other politicians will take heed.

Yes, that is the most important and salient point of the thread!
