Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

1000 replies

Backwardsbinn · 13/08/2026 20:33

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

How many stereotypes? Let me count the ways….

"In an attempt to demonstrate her understanding of where transgender people are coming from, Rowling even says she too might have considered transitioning had the option been available to her as a teenager. “The allure of escaping womanhood would have been huge, “ she writes. “If I’d found community and sympathy online that I couldn’t find in my immediate environment, I believe I could have been persuaded to turn myself into the son my father had openly said he’d have preferred.”

The belief that gender identity is a phase, a choice, or something that is influenced by other people is a stereotype that minimizes the struggles of anyone who experiences gender dysphoria. Transitioning isn’t easy but Rowling seems to be saying people can choose to transition on a whim simply because they think it’s more convenient to be one gender than another.

In her essay, Rowling goes on to reveal that she is a domestic and sexual abuse survivor and those experiences have made her even more focused on biology, “out of solidarity with the huge numbers of women who have histories like mine, who’ve been slurred as bigots for having concerns around single-sex spaces.”

Referring to the debate around public washrooms in particular, Rowling claims she’s concerned for the safety of cis women and girls. “When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman—and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones—then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside.”

Throughout her essay, Rowling talks about how easy it is for a biological man to become a woman in the eyes of the law and how potentially dangerous that could be for cis women. The fear that a large number of transgender women are just men who want to be able to use women-only spaces unchecked is a harmful stereotype that paints trans people as predators instead of just human beings who want to live their lives.

In her attempt to defend herself against the TERF label, Rowling just ended up providing more solid evidence that she is one. She works hard to disguise her views as feminism and genuine concern for the wellbeing of all women, but relies heavily on a number unsubstantiated opinions about trans people that the community has been fighting against for years. Rowling sees herself as highly educated on transgender issues but she still fails to see how her views—and her insistence on using her huge platform to promote them—are hurting transgender people."

When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman—and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones—then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside.”

These are the two quotes that you have pointed out as being JK Rowling’s ‘transphobbia’.

Did you note that even the writer of this weak argument wrote the following:

“Transitioning isn’t easy but Rowling seems to be saying people can choose to transition on a whim simply because they think it’s more convenient to be one gender than another.”

‘Seems’ So… they even indicate that this is their own interpretation of her words that they, personally, have extrapolated.

What is interesting, is that this writer has missed something hugely significant. in the UK, transitioning only requires someone saying they have a transgender identity. This writer has used their personal belief about what a transgender identity means and any process required to gain a GRC to make their accusation.

This writer has confused their own belief about the pathway people have to take to be considered someone with a transgender identity with the reality of the process. And added their own perception of the emotional journey as well. They have decided their own personal criteria and belief about transgender identities as being representative of all of the group of people with transgender identities.

I consider this transphobic of the writer. This writer has arbitrated what is criteria for being a person with a transgender identity. We have seen numerous posters on FWR do this over the years who consider themselves to be defending transgender people.

That is also why neither of these two direct quotes you have selected and bolded show what you, and the writer of this woefully weak article, believe it shows.

As for this justification from the writer :

The fear that a large number of transgender women are just men who want to be able to use women-only spaces unchecked is a harmful stereotype that paints trans people as predators instead of just human beings who want to live their lives.”

The writer has used emotional reasoning to coerce, while using misinformation to confuse the reader.

a large number of transgender women are just men who want to be able to use women-only spaces unchecked

There are male person who is above 8 years old who do claim to have transgender identifies who do want to use the female only single sex provision. They self publish that they do, and indeed, many simply did as they wanted when this article was written. In large numbers.

This writer then attributes the fear to those male people being painted as predators.

There are two issues immediately that spring to mind about that action from the writer. One is that it tries to dishonestly make the statement that no male people with transgender identities are predators.

The writer doesn’t address that materially real fact proven with convictions in the UK that some male people with transgender identities have been in prison for sex crimes which specifically fit the description of ‘predator’. Instead the writer uses a false generalisation device to make the reader believe this never happens.

The writer hides the truth behind a false generalisation.

The other obvious issue that this writer ignores is the general behaviour pattern that can be described as ‘predatory’ is that of ignoring female people’s lack of consent and acting in ways that cause that female person harm. Any male person over the age of 8 years old using a single sex provision where female people have the expectation that no male people over the age of 8 years old are also using that provision with them, is doing so without that female person’s consent.

Being a male with a transgender identity does not mean that they can ignore female people’s consent and it never did. They might have believed otherwise, however, from a safeguarding principle perspective a sex segregated provision was only ever for female people to access. As humans cannot change sex, those male people should never have been using a female single sex provision. The behaviour of ignoring a female person’s consent by entering a female single sex provision is a predatory behaviour.

The writer is lazy and uses very superficial explanations and their own bad faith and inaccurate representations that fall apart with scrutiny. It makes the accusations meaningless.

Edit to add: I forgot to clarify how the writer attempts to coerce in that false statement. They attempt to coerce because they portray female people as being unreasonable in rejecting those male people with transgender identities. That is an emotional coercion tactic.

Yep. We've seen it time and time again.

Trans identified men, including some who have posted on this site, are constantly talking about how their ingestion of cross sex hormones, their extreme body modifications and overall adoption of female social sex stereotypes, actually makes them the opposite sex. There was also that big- jawed lawyer on Channel 4, who complained about the Supreme Court decision saying that every 'cell in his body has become feminised', so because of that, he shouldn't be excluded from female spaces.

I remember reading a comment from a self proclaimed "transsexual woman" activist, on a substack article regarding the paused puberty trials, who asserted multiple times that sex is mutable because children who are given exogenous cross sex hormones early enough, will grow up to be the opposite sex. Here's part of their comment: "An MtF ends up a sterile female, from molecular biology up to phenotype. For example."

During the Sandie Peggie employment tribunal, the trans-identified male doctor Theodore "Beth" Upton, described himself as a "biological woman" who would impose himself on female patients in the event that they requested a female doctor for intimate care.

Here's an excellent article with multiple examples of trans-identified men, including prominent activists, describing themselves as "biological women" and "female", including the fragrant India Willoughby.

Helleofabore · 15/08/2026 10:03

The writings of young trans men reveal a group of notably sensitive and clever people. The more of their accounts of gender dysphoria I’ve read, with their insightful descriptions of anxiety, dissociation, eating disorders, self-harm and self-hatred, the more I’ve wondered whether, if I’d been born 30 years later, I too might have tried to transition. The allure of escaping womanhood would have been huge. I struggled with severe OCD as a teenager. If I’d found community and sympathy online that I couldn’t find in my immediate environment, I believe I could have been persuaded to turn myself into the son my father had openly said he’d have preferred.

and

I want to be very clear here: I know transition will be a solution for some gender dysphoric people, although I’m also aware through extensive research that studies have consistently shown that between 60-90% of gender dysphoric teens will grow out of their dysphoria. Again and again I’ve been told to ‘just meet some trans people.’ I have: in addition to a few younger people, who were all adorable, I happen to know a self-described transsexual woman who’s older than I am and wonderful. Although she’s open about her past as a gay man, I’ve always found it hard to think of her as anything other than a woman, and I believe (and certainly hope) she’s completely happy to have transitioned. Being older, though, she went through a long and rigorous process of evaluation, psychotherapy and staged transformation. The current explosion of trans activism is urging a removal of almost all the robust systems through which candidates for sex reassignment were once required to pass. A man who intends to have no surgery and take no hormones may now secure himself a Gender Recognition Certificate and be a woman in the sight of the law. Many people aren’t aware of this.”

Should be also read in the full context here :

https://www.jkrowling.com/opinions/j-k-rowling-writes-about-her-reasons-for-speaking-out-on-sex-and-gender-issues/

Because the essay starts to conclude with :

”I believe the majority of trans-identified people not only pose zero threat to others, but are vulnerable for all the reasons I’ve outlined. Trans people need and deserve protection. Like women, they’re most likely to be killed by sexual partners. Trans women who work in the sex industry, particularly trans women of colour, are at particular risk. Like every other domestic abuse and sexual assault survivor I know, I feel nothing but empathy and solidarity with trans women who’ve been abused by men.”

So I want trans women to be safe. At the same time, I do not want to make natal girls and women less safe. When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman – and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones – then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside. That is the simple truth.

Just to highlight :

”I believe the majority of trans-identified people not only pose zero threat to others”

On this board regulars will have seen numerous of the same type of superficial articles that @Northernlightsss has posted. They all dishonestly remove soundbite quotes from the full context of a paragraph with bad faith interpretations. I also think some lazy writers copy the ‘quotes’ from other sources and not from the original source meaning that are perpetuating the dishonesty of another writer. (Too often with the absurdity that is ‘I read it so you don’t have to as it is unsafe for you to read it yourself’)

When read in the full context those accusation are seen rather differently.

The desperate attempts to pin the intention of transphobia onto JKR rather than see them as factual observations and explanations of problematic areas and the hypocrisy and blindness of transactivism, always seems to reveal an internalised suppression of transphobia / homophobia / racism / sexism on the part of the person attempting it.

It is fascinating to watch.

I think they feel that the reproductive element is such a small factor in being a woman that as long as they nail some element of the clothes, hair, make-up and stereotypical cultural choices (all women watch rom coms and Love Island apparently) then they are a woman.

Certainly JKs old friend India has spouted that the only womanly thing they can't do is have periods and since many biological women can't do it either (albeit for different medical reasons) they are the same.

What scares me more is that there are women out there who also believe and support this insane thinking.

And these accusations of transphobia weren’t just about stereotypes. These were about harmful stereotypes. It strikes me that the only type of people who would think it was harmful to discuss the self-reported occurrences of mental distress among transpeople, would be the type of people that think young people who express discomfort around their sexed body or their ‘gender’ shouldn’t receive psychological support. Certainly no support that looked holistically and objectively at the roots of their distress.

Language matters.

Your sentence doesn’t make sense: her chromosomes - how can her chromosomes turn to female? Her implies female.

Correct pronouns show this nonsense up for what it is. With correct pronouns it’s not the sentence that doesn’t make sense, but the person to whom it applies.

I think the stereotype is in suggesting that children are not the same as men.

She speaks to children with empathy, and says she was once like them.

She can't say the same about the men because what woman can understand an adult male transitioner? No woman can ever be in that situation.

The stereotype is that the motivations of adult men and children are different. And what that difference is.

If TRA express this directly, it would highlight this to everyone, proving JKR point. Who are the adult men who could prove JKR wrong? Blair White, Eddie izzard, India Willoughby, Debbie Hayton? They are all men clearly motivated by issues children cannot be.

She can't say the same about the men because what woman can understand an adult male transitioner? No woman can ever be in that situation.

What man can understand what it is to be a woman? No man can ever be in that situation.
