Is there such a thing as a ‘safe’ private gender clinic for a vulnerable young adult?

Hi
I’m posting on behalf of a friend whose autistic and depressed child has just turned 19, informed their parents they are trans and requested a private gender referral or they will end their life. DC has inflicted quite violent things on themselves in the past and the parents feel follow through is very likely.

The parents have managed to get DC to start SSRIs a few days ago but DC refuses any counselling. DC has identified a clinic they would like to be seen at and they will see very quickly. They won’t say ahead of a consult what their process is or how they safeguard patients.

My friend is terrified.

does anyone know of a private clinic (London or SE) that follows a sensible and safe process?

thank you very much.

‘Do what I want or I will kill myself’ is the language of an abuser.

Please ask this question on a forum not overwhelmingly devoted to anti-trans activism and hate.

If all this is true, then a young life depends upon it.

Ask people who don't view being suicidal as violence and who know that being trans is normal.

Autism is very common. It's not a synonym for LD, although some people experience both. Autistic trans people find it hard to hide who they are. Depression usually results from bullying and untreated gender dysphoria, but may have other roots too.

They need to speak to a local trans service - such as a helpline - and avoid asking transphobes any opinion at all regarding this young adult's safety.

My own advice would be for them to hug, accept and respect their child. Listen to them and be supportive. Immediately use the pronouns and name they prefer. This will greatly lessen their dysphoria and calm them, which will help while any clinical advice is sought.

Above all, they must understand there is no cabal of adults wishing to 'trans' young people.

Denying their child's autonomy is ableist, and will result in greater distress.

If they're real, I wish this poor young person well. Trans people desperately need family support.

The only hate on this forum, OP, is for those who try to circumvent safeguarding of children and young adults. As suggested earlier, try https://www.bayswatersupport.org.uk/

Those private gender clinics supply hormones to everyone who asks after a couple of appointments (possibly online), there is no criteria to meet in order to get a diagnosis or receive the desired subscription. The young people I know who have used them have all swapped notes online on what to say in the consultations to get what they want. These clinics have no requirement to engage in ongoing psychological support, and other causes of distress are not questioned. So no, to my mind they are not safe.

It is not normal to deny reality and take drugs that destroy your health and undertake mutilating cosmetic surgeries in an effort to try an do the impossible. ‘Transitioning’ increases suicide risk eighteen-fold.
