Even if they were / are a good idea, it is inevitable that men will use them as a weapon against women.

And happy enough to share it on line to advertise that they are perverts.

It's another reason for women to be nervous isn't it.
I was in the library the other day, pottering around choosing a book and there was a man sitting there so say reading a book...but I kept catching him looking up and he was wearing glasses. Probably completely innocent but It made me really think about the situation and how it could impact on womens confidence and feeling of safety.

A tool is a tool. Usage can be positive or negative. It's not the tools fault, but the user.

Absolutely, but often the rules around them focus on the negatives.
