Meta ordered to pay almost $1bn over child safety failings

Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has been ordered to pay $567m (£421m) to address the harm caused to children on its platforms.

A judge in New Mexico found the company to be a "public nuisance" and ruled that most of the money will be used for treatment services for young people.

The new penalty is in addition to the $375m (£280m) Meta was ordered to pay in damages after a jury ruled in March that the company had knowingly harmed children's mental health, taking the total to almost $1bn.

Isn't that a bit like saying go on selling tobacco, we will fine you and use the money to pay for cancer treatment? Sad

Good. Now when is Elon Musk going to be ordered to pay damages for its pedobot making CP and revenge porn of women?

Adults need to step up and take responsibility for how children access these platforms - giving children 24/7 unsupervised access to smartphones is doing Meta's dirty work for them.

Sadly as many parents have found out given the culture of being online, that all too often having thought they were providing supervised use of the internet, access via friends etc., mean short of holding their hand all day, you cant be sure what they will be looking at.

But I think the significant part of the fine (the money will mean nothing to them) is the fact that they are now named as not being responsible about child safety.

After all the internet itself isn't a problem. It is those who use it to promote their sick ideas and images which are the problem.

Lucky for Elon, forums in the US are not responsible for what people post on them.

Meta, on the other hand IS responsible for their own fucking algorithms that were deliberately targeting children.

Hope this helps.

Lucky old Elon.
And lucky women getting used by disgusting pathetic immature men.

Aren’t US cultural exports just fantastic?
