This is absolutely insane. A woman in Brazil has been handed a two-year prison sentence for referring to a man as a man.

Well Brazil obviously has prison space going spare. Let's send them all the murderers, rapists, sex offenders and other pieces of shit that we can't fit in our prisons.

Point of order: she hasn't been imprisoned. Her sentence is similar to house arrest.

It's cruel and insane. I was reading about an Australian woman who was sentenced to prison for the same crime - iirc, her sentence was converted to a ridiculously large fine, but I imagined the conversations in the rec room:
~ What you in for?
~ I said a male person was a man.

Brazil sounds like a crazy place. The article says a trans woman is on their Woman's Rights Committee, and male transvestites are regarded as women in law. Being polite means using gendered terms equivalent to sir or miss, so if you call a man wearing women's clothes "sir", you're committing an offence.

For two years! It's like 1984. Hate speech.

Well-constructed new laws against VAWG have been introduced over the past few years (none liberalising abortion, sadly) but implementation is abysmal.

A 2024 study showed that half of adults in the North-East (an economically deprived region) had witnessed a male assault on a woman in just one year.

Pronouns aren't a statement of fact but simply a social convention & if you deny a social convention to one group & not another that's not only discrimination but harassment even in British law. Pronouns aren't a forced belief but rather like all other social conventions designed to enhance social cohesion via respect & dignity for others. They aren't agreeing with a choice rather respecting others despite their choices.

And its not as if sex can't be verbally distinguished because all that's required is the use of the 'trans' prefix to do so….even in Portuguese.

I won’t lie, and all this type of utterly dystopian persecution does is cement in my mind (and others who possibly haven’t even given this a second thought prior to this type of insanity) that trans = NOT, trans = ANTI, trans = a forced lie. Whatever tras are hoping to accomplish by compelling speech, I hope they realise that all it does is reinforce that TWANW, as I and many, many others read TW (both visually and through speech) as Not-women. They are a general kind of noun that replaces specific nouns, to avoid repetition of the specific noun.
A pronoun should agree with its antecedent in number, gender, and person - that's grammar, not a forced belief nor a social convention.
