Why are some gender critical feminists praising Rod Liddle?

Can anyone give any insight into why gender critical stalwarts such as Kathleen Stock, Julie Bindel and Rosie Duffield are praising Rod Liddle? He was a wife-beating misogynist who argued that it shouldn't be a crime to look at images of child abuse.

It could be they are excusing his behaviour because he was personally nice to them, but honestly I am not sure.

Gutted about Rod Liddle, he was a great man. I take huge pride in having been regular contributor to his show, and I appreciated his support for my writing very much. I know full well what the online sisterhood think about this but I don't care in the...

He was pretty awful, according to my limited knowledge.

But to coin a cliché, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Exactly.

@Mouldemort a trans women ex-friend of mine was all in favour of people (men) using real life sex dolls and what he called child pornography to meet “their needs” and his trans friends told me that imagining sex with children was just the same as me imagining sex with an adult fictional character.

i informed him that viewing images of CSAM was a crime and involved real children. I’ve since blocked him. Reported him to the NSPCC and raised him as a safeguarding risk (he likes to offer blockers and cross sex hormones to under age kids).

what do you think about that?

I don't think I've seen evidence that Rod Liddle 'beat his wife' though there does seem to have been a heated argument between them in which he possibly became aggressive. That's not a good reflection on him.

I still don't want children to be led to believe their personalities or interests mean they aren't their real sex and should become lifelong patients to attain a fantasy of changing sex.

Unlike most or all of the people on this thread, I am a friend of Rod’s, and no, he did not beat up his wife.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 03/08/2026 20:03

I'm shocked to hear this, I was listening to him on a podcast only a few weeks ago. I mostly enjoyed listening to him, him could talk a load of rubbish sometimes but he was also perceptive and far thinking on a lot of things.

My condolences to his family, his contributions to the discussion about the battshitery that has captured so many empty minds will be missed.

Regardless of his alleged faults, there are many on here who are putting their, all too obvious, faults on full display. Any of them who think they're better than RL are sadly mistaken, but then being mistaken is their default setting.

I’m sorry for your loss and for his children. I lost my own dad very suddenly who was a couple of years younger than Rod, it was devastating.

One of the things you realise as a feminist is that most men are misogynistic to a degree. You have to accept it otherwise you'd go mad. So yes, I found Liddle's views to be offensively misogynistic at times. But on the plus side, he refused to believe that men could be women, which, whatever his other views, placed him well ahead of all the left-wing politicians, actors, journalists, academics, trade unionists, comedians etc who pretend to believe that men can be women.

Gender ideology is as misogynistic as it comes - any man who claims to believe that men can be women has absolutely no right at all attacking Liddle for being a misogynist. Because however misogynistic he was, he is still by an order of magnitude less misogynistic than you, you utter prick.

I get what you're saying but I think it's a bit too lenient to excuse writing the kind of stuff Liddle did on a national platform on the grounds 'all men are like that'.

Incidentally, I was reading Vicky Pryce's book Prisonomics (I'm sceptical of her personally but the book has excellent info on women's prisons back in 2011). I read up a bit onto the reasons why she went to prison, which I vaguely remembered, and Liddle's article about Trimingham struck me as pretty prejudiced against lesbian relationships, with the mockery of her appearance as masculine.

https://spectator.com/article/what-makes-me-feel-sorry-for-chris-huhne/

He was no doubt pleasant to Stock as they were allies against gender woo but if they had met in a context where they were in opposition he likely would have mocked her as a masculine lesbian too- though I'd like to think his views became less prejudiced.

His opening words about Harriet Harman in thus column, whatever your opinions on her, seem pretty misogynistic too :

<a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20091204030420/www.spectator.co.uk/essays/5244693/harriet-harman-is-either-thick-or-criminally-disingenuous.thtml" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://web.archive.org/web/20091204030420/www.spectator.co.uk/essays/5244693/harriet-harman-is-either-thick-or-criminally-disingenuous.thtml

(The Spectator conveniently removed the article from their website so I had to give the archival link).

What makes me feel sorry for Chris Huhne

If Chris Huhne hadn’t copped off with that woman who looks remarkably like the late comedian Jack Douglas, I suppose we would have been deprived of all the tumultuous glee which has attended both his utter collapse, as a man, and his likely incarcerati...

Thank you.
I am sorry for your loss too. Losing your Dad like that must have been so hard. My Dad also died very suddenly but at a more expected age, in his seventies, it does take a long time to process the shock.

Lot of people very concerned about the Alicia of 20 years ago unable to find an ounce of compassion for her as a relatively young widow.

Rod Liddle wasn't left wing or libertarian, though, was he?

I don't think this was a common view among UK right wingers, especially not the social conservative wing Liddle seemed to align with.

I don't think it being a common view at the time is really a defence. If viewing child Abu images were not a crime, a lot of dangerous people would be walking around free- and enough do as it is.

I was responding to the question as to why the guardian published it. I am not saying I agreed with Liddle’s view point, just pointing out that it was not the complete outlier that it would be today.

I can’t remember the specific views of the right wing press so I can’t speak to that. My impression that it wasn’t a left vs right issue (hence my reference to libertarians)

My social circles were left wing and it was predominantly the men who had objections. To be fair they may have taking the reasonable devils advocate position so common at the time when feminists discussed anything.

Do you remember the political debate at the time? Was it just generally accepted as a good thing in your circle?

From what I have read, it seems that his wife herself publicly said he had not been violent towards her. Otoh, while I understand you were friends with him, I don't think that necessarily means you can know what occurred within his marriage. Men who are physically or otherwise abusive usually do not show that side to friends or wider family.

I'm not commenting on Liddle specifically here as I don't know enough about the situation.
But I think in general it's very hard for outsiders to know if a marriage is abusive or not, even if they are friends with one party.

He was left wing at some point. He worked for the Labour Party.

Sorry, I'm older Gen Z so I was too young to participate in that debate.

I understand some right wingers supported it, but right wing is a broad church and if these views were common in Liddle's circle. I will look up though further.

He stood as an SDP candidate, so I guess centre left?

Abhannmor · 03/08/2026 20:24

Rosie Duffield sounds much more mature and tolerant than me. Probably too intelligent to be an MP. What happened to Liddle I wonder? As editor of Today on Radio 4 he looked like the guitarist in a Britpop band , all boyish good looks. He seems to have morphed into a cartoonish ,raddled right wing hulk.

He took the Murdoch shilling I suppose...tis a curse !

JoanOgden · 03/08/2026 20:43

I read Rod Liddle's Sunday Times column occasionally and found about 10% of it very witty and spot on, and the rest horrible, sneering and borderline racist.

There's an interview with him here which reflects both sides of the argument: https://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/jun/13/rod-liddle-im-not-a-bigot

And some quotes from him here, including those he posted under a username he thought was anonymous: https://www.theguardian.com/media/2010/jan/22/rod-liddle-quip-auschwitz-millwall

Rod Liddle interview: 'I'm not a bigot'

Simon Hattenstone: Since his days editing Radio 4's Today programme, Rod Liddle has made a career out of controversy. His new book is no exception and has led to, er, mixed reviews and accusations of bigotry. So is he? A bigot?

Hmm yes @JoanOgden bit like the late A A Gill or Giles Coren ? Or for older readers , Auberon Waugh I suppose.

He admitted the offence.

Strange times when the MN 'feminism' board is getting irate at people pointing out such facts. Domestic abuse is ok when it's by someone you like? Gotcha.

Have you read the article quoted twice now on this thread?

The row, Liddle admitted, had been explosive - but he denied hitting Monckton. "We had this row and we were shouting at each other. I said, 'Well, phone the police', and she said she would. I thought she was only joking. She didn't talk to them, just hung up. An hour later the coppers got here. She begged them to go away, but they wouldn't." Monckton confirmed that she hadn't been hurt. "There was a physical struggle with a suitcase, but he didn't hit me," she said.

I hold no brief for the man. He was clearly an absolute shit to his first wife. But this incident got a lot of publicity at the time. As far as I can see his first wife has not accused him of being violent to her (one of the few things she hasn't accused him of), and neither has any other woman. Alice Monckton went into print to say he hadn't hit her. Liddell accepted a caution, very unwisely, because he wanted to get out of the police station. He wasn't the first person to do that and he won't be the last.

He has loads of GC guests on his times radio show, Rosie, Kemi, Kathleen all appeared more than once. He was consistently strong and vocal on women’s rights in this context. Why wouldn’t they be sad at his death?

Because he joked about shagging school kids and opposed child pornograohy laws

If that's true, then your friend and their friends are reprehensible.

But then so would anyone who called them "great people" if they died just because they'd supported some of their views and were fun to have a drink with.

He was, I believe, specifically referring to the laws around viewing rather than possession of sexual images of children. As someone else says, this wasn’t just something that only Liddle was talking about at that time. I’m not even sure that ‘just’ viewing images was illegal everywhere then.
