I'm a biology/biotechnology lecturer from Belgium. This is what Belgium is like today.

In Belgium, we have laws that allow self-identification of sex. In practice, this means that a man can go to the town hall, fill out an administrative form (with no other requirements), and have his legal sex changed to “female” on his ID card, birth certificate, and other official documents, thereby gaining access to all rights reserved for women.

In Belgium, a man can challenge in court a decision by an international sports federation that excludes males from women's competitions and subsequently be allowed to participate.

In Belgium, there is an Institute for the Equality of Women and Men. Guess which side it supported in that legal case? Not the sports federations and the women advocating for fair competition, but the man seeking to compete in women's sports (he won).

In Belgium, a man can be placed in a women's prison.

In Belgium, a man can fill a position reserved under a women's quota.

In Belgium, men can gain access to women's changing rooms.

In Belgium, feminists who oppose these developments are portrayed by the media as far-right.

In Belgium, kindergarten children are taught about the “Genderbread Person,” planting a seed of doubt in their minds about the physical reality of sex.

In Belgium, many young people subsequently act on that doubt and begin transitioning.

In Belgium, we also have a law prohibiting conversion therapy. As a result, therapists are not permitted to question a young person's gender identity and, under threat of legal sanctions, may be reluctant to offer treatment aimed at helping them reconcile with their biological sex.

In Belgium, advocacy groups do everything they can, using people with DSDs (Differences of Sex Development), to create confusion about the binary and immutable nature of sex.

In Belgium, the dean of medicine at a major university claims that sex is a spectrum, and that people can change sex through surgery. The media seem to appreciate his views.

In Belgium they are fuckwits who are out of touch with reality.

And it has made me feel so grateful for FWS and all the amazing women in the UK who have fought so hard for this not to happen here.

Although we have made progress in the UK, many EU countries seem like a lost cause. How will this ever be undone?

There has been a lot of speculation about a TRA taking a case to the ECtHR, but I've wondered if we will see a woman in a country such as Belgium, Spain or Germany bring a case trying to reassert that women should have protection in law based on their sex?

I could not agree more. How will this ever be reversed in countries like Belgium, Spain, Australia, Canada? It's such an authoritarian ideology that I can understand why so many ordinary people, even if they disagree, feel too scared and exposed to stand up to it.
I wish we did not have to rely on the bravery of nurses and other frontline workers or indeed organisations like FWS to reverse it.

Everything like this eventually collapses under its own weight due to scandals and overreach.

The legal system in many countries has historically had many laws which were basically about the church having control. Until they didn't.

You're right but it's going to be a long painful clawback. It's just disgraceful how so many nations have fucked this up. The hurt along the way financially, mentally, physically is such a waste.

I do like to think you are right RedToothBrush and there is no point despairing. But sometimes it feels hard when you think about the cost of it all. How many people's livelihoods ruined for speaking out and what awful things will and have come to pass until this forces change.

Yes, it has been difficult here, I can't imagine how hard it is for women in countries where they have changed the law to prioritise gender identity over sex.

@RedToothBrush I do think things will eventually be reversed, even in places like Canada, but it's going to be a long road to get there, so it's hard not to despair sometimes.

It may be a long time down the road but you can't hide stuff like this. There will always eventually be people who feel they have nothing to lose and will expose the dark underbelly because they feel they have a moral duty to.

Scary stuff OP but surely it can't last forever. Unfortunately it will probably take the sexual assault of women and those women being brave enough to speak out to start the tide turning back again. I guess it is probably made doubly difficult when the media report all trans women just as 'women' so it's even harder to get to the truth of a situation or figure out exactly what has happened.

I imagine Belgium and other countries with similar ideological policies will find themselves on the end of some very expensive lawsuits, as their citizens sue the health and social services left, right and centre for conspiring with their temporary beliefs and harms done, when the penny finally drops humans can’t change sex. I don’t think those days are too far away.

It will be very, very difficult for women to fight this in the domestic courts in these countries though with the law as it currently stands. PP mentioned it will take women being sexually assaulted before the ride turns. But women have been sexually assaulted. This just gets dismissed as being carried out by a few bad actors (rapist gender) and we are told we shouldn't tar a whole community because of them. Oh and something about how women commit sexual assault too 🙄

Was there a report from a journalist in Belgium a few years ago about how they couldn’t report on what was happening there in the media?

Róisín Michaux and her Peaked Substack is one of the best people to follow on this, she's in Belgium at the heart of EU genderwang.

Belgium is home to the EU so they've been triple dosed in the batshitery, if Burnham takes further into the EU we'll end up just as bad.
I think in the end the lunacy of GI will just be so impossible to deal with it'll just be rejected on mass for the sake of everyone's sanity. The clean up afterwards will take a lot of years, because the Lanyard Class has done a lot of damage, but the world will right itself in the end.

I wish I had your optimism. Reading Róisín Michaux and her overarching takes on the institutional capture of her former employer the EU, the moves by the WHO to depathologise transgenderism to a mere sexual health classification, the EU itself doubling down more and more, it seems the Denton's playbook is still very much on track.

What really worries me is the children growing up in this.

In Ireland that change took decades and decades, half a lifetime. That is what worries me most with our self ID nonsense.

We are culturally very avoidant in many ways (similar to stiff upper lip in many ways) and the trans thing on the one hand benefits from that and on the other hand is hampered by it as people very much don’t say what they think but equally the Irish have other ways of saying what they think.

I wouldn't say I was optimistic about the end of this, more matter of fact. Does RM take into account the changing demographic of the population of Europe, because it's all going to blow up because of it. The Elite won't stand up for the culture that created the modern world, they're not going to have the courage to stand up to a culture that wants to wipe out the modern world even more than they do. Europe's dedication to this bloody ideology is going to collapse.

There's an ongoing German court case brought by a TiM trying to gain admission to a women-only gym in the city of Erlangen which may bring some clarity. Existing legislation is ambiguous - the recent Self-ID law explicitly recognizes the right of service providers to set their own policy, however this may be in conflict with anti-discrimination legislation (which interestingly enough, mentions both sex and gender identity as protected). Pretty sure we had a thread or two on it back when this particular sorry saga first started.

That's a Hell of a zero sum game.
