I have the Japanese series on DVD though probably twenty years since I watched it. The original title translates to Science Ninja Team Gatchaman.

It's a much better series than BOTP - and no annoying underwater robots!

How do manatees swim? I ask because I've read that manatees are supposed to have inspired some of the myths of mermaids, and to have been mistaken for mermaids by confused sailors.

Manatees and dugongs swim by wafting their tails up and down.

'Confused' sailors or sailors who had hit the rum ration a little too hard?

Uppy downy tail motion, no scales, not fish ( unless everything is a fish).

Maybe mermaids are fish, but the human half has been stuck on to the tails sideways.

This is the only possible explanation, and it explains everything.

This does mean that mer genitalia must be positioned on their apparent flanks, not their fronts.

Perhaps merpeople followed the same evolutionary path as flat fish? The various species evolved to lie flat on the seabed and, when they swim, their tails flap up and down. They hatch out looking like normal fish fry but one of their eyes migrates to the other side of their head as they mature and their bodies flatten out.

If this is correct I'd hate to go through merperson puberty.

I have no idea where the genitals of something like a turbot might be. I admit I've never given it much thought. Next time I eat out, I'll have to order a flat fish (probably not turbot, minimum catch size 41 cm, unless I'm really hungry) and do some dissecting. They don't have a fish counter at Tesco anymore...which is probably just as well.

Hmm they would look even less like the supposed 'beautiful maidens' than manatees. None of the descriptions of mermaids I've read have mentioned both eyes being on the (same) side of their head.

I'm reminded of what the characters in Peppa Pig would look like in real life. Not the costumes that were designed so they wouldn't appear fucking horrific.

First of all we need to iron out (eh, see what I did there?) whether mermaids give birth to live young or whether they lay eggs. Then we can work out the path puberty takes.

Although, surely for humans and creatures with a human head, having eyes on the same surface is relatively normal? We have such small noses (at least compared to Peppa Pig) that our eyes are basically on the same side of our heads!

But but Icake's gif suggests on the side of their head as in next to their ear, rather than the front as they are in humans (and that's before we think about them starting at the front then mirgrating during puberty.)

Who cares? A small arts organisation has suggested an idea, they're not demanding the whole world change its thinking. It's a thing art does, it suggests different ways of thinking about things that you can take it or leave it or laugh at if you want, but it's hardly worth anyone's outrage.

It's very apt though.

If it happened to a humanoid the one eye would join its partner to the side of the nose like Peppa Pig or a Picasso painting. Unlike Peppa Pig, who has another two eyes and a mouth, the other side of the head would be blank.

You know, in most cases I'd 100% agree with you.

But in the case of trans activist art, it's part of a movement that is demanding the whole world changes its thinking. A movement that seeks to remove rights and protections from probably the most consistently abused and exploited groups of humans (female people) and seeks to impose sexist redefintions of identity not just on the trans people who want them but on every single one of us.

This art is not challenging the establishment or power, it is celebrating and enforcing it.

It's not a 21st century equivalent to Dada, Guerilla Girls or AgitProp, it's the 21st century equivalent of salon art and pretty naked ladies, funded by the established and produced for an audience that wants to be affirmed not challenged.

Mermaids have breasts so they suckle their young. I guess that means that the young are live-born.

Gatchaman. They edited it as well as dubbing it when they re imagined it as Battle of The Planets for Western audiences. There was a lot more violence in the original I believe and 7Zark7 wasn't in it. He was added for the kids
